The Grief Shortage I spent so much time in the past few years working through my allotment of grief like it was on prescription. I let myself have just enough to get through each day. But I made myself get in line behind the people who lost a daughter/parent/partner. Once the Cycle for Survival got under way this huge sense of relief washed over me. People made t-shirts for the mom/daughter/brother/friend who went through chemo. Some teams celebrated the miracle of remission. Others got together to remember a dear loved one. I’ve never seen a more smiley room. I spent so many years saying quietly to myself, “This is hard—but, I must qualify that statement—not as hard as chemo.” But in a room of survivors and supporters we could drop that act. We knew. When it was my turn on the bike I started sweating I could feel my whole body crying. I didn’t need to dole my grief out anymore. I could just let it rip. Grief is just the place where love goes when it gets lost. If you found a lost child you wouldn’t scold them or lock them away or tell them not to be lost any more. You’d sit with them until someone could help them find where they needed to go. Thank you to the friends who came to ride with me. I’m gonna ride again next year. I hope you join me.
