This week has been Mental Health Awareness Week across the UK. I’ve suffered with depression for more than half of my life, and so I’ve felt so honoured to be part of my companies efforts this week to highlight such an important issue to so many people. I also shared my story with the world on my friends terrific blog Surviving Sundays. I hope this week’s events are just the start.

Don’t ever feel inhibited. It’s harder to censor yourself than to just be yourself. Whatever you’re doing, whether it’s music or not, find people who support your ideas; that will keep you going. Everything else will come naturally if you’re in a supportive environment. Don’t be around people who make you feel like you can’t be yourself. Don’t hang around naysayers or people who give you a hard time about what you’re doing. Criticism can be fine, but it has to be constructive and productive, and not damaging.

The sarcasm and cynicism of the internet to one side, there's nothing more empowering than seeing lots of people feeling empowered.

I guess it could be called jealousy, but I truly mean that without any of the bitterness.

This post deserves more than just a "Like"; it's been some time since I've actually thought about ending my own life... partly through feeling if not happier, then at least more comfortable, with myself and also through dealing with those thoughts more constructively.  However, today's news really floored me because as upsetting as it was to lose a major talent in a field that I truly respect, it was even worse that people could comment on those well-known thoughts that I've experienced and how it is still considered such a "weakness".  For me personally, it's hard to imagine a time when that reaction will change, but also a heart-warming experience to discover how many people that you already respect have the same views.

I typically stay away from personal thoughts on here. But I will say this: I agree that seeing posts from people you once respected stating that suicide is cowardly/selfish/etc is both infuriating and disappointing, as we like to think that our peers are knowledgable and aware of what they are...
