this season is truly giving us the characters of all time & the players at their best. like:

intelligence-based emily character?? already deadly. she was once the spitfire of the crew but now she's haunted, hollow, vengeful? she might be a revenant bc you can't convince me marya wouldn't live & die by "captain goes down with the ship"? she crashes into a wasp just so she can personally shoot their engine out? she has a pet rat with a mech suit that's more than ready to beat the shit out of intruders? she runs a toy shop with her aunt zuzu? inspired.

nepo baby child of true libertarians beardsley character? & a rogue at that? already getting flashbacks to liam wilhelmina. on top of that she's a trans fangirl that her grandma knew would need to be protected at all costs? you can tell she's imagining herself on an adventure with monty when she's lassoing the pheasants, that "easy girl" is a direct quote. they're at the height of their power.

lou pulling out a ranger, i think the first wisdom-based character of his since kingston brown. he's a bestselling author, he's an environmental advocate, his voice is quiet (very close to lou's eursulon voice imo), he hangs off the side of a ship to riddle the deck with bullets, he's silent when he marks his quarry and kills without hesitation. he pulled his tooth out to give it to a boar. my god he's perfect.

siobhan "i don't think i have any beefy characters" thompson rolling up with a fighter, born into & bred for sailing, fighting, and giving orders. she's never heard of sunscreen, she's the crew's hardass mom, she'll go down before she lets anyone touch marya, she greets adrenaline & blood with the same fondness as her cinnamon roll of a husband. she will protect her family at all costs. immaculate.

zac. fucking. oyama. the old southern man of all time. he's wanted, by the law and by many others. he's divorced. he lived with a pack of coyotes to cope with the heartbreak. he swore to protect your family where you couldn't. he's a gunslinger. his best friend is a labrador that's been called "ghost dog" since he was a puppy 38 years ago. his guns are called "biscuits" & "gravy". you can see some of his greatest hits coming together to form a new fan favorite. brennan WILL fuck that old man before the season ends.

don't even get me started on whatever the fuck Maxwell Gotch has going on. murph, who just wants to be a good good boy and punch bad guys, once again putting himself on the front lines. he's out & proud at college but closeted at home, he loves his grandfather, he's reclaiming "rowdy", he only removes his gloves by biting them. he wakes up every day at 5am to do a thousand squats. he gets bloodlust so potent he damn near kills himself in the process of killing three other dudes, and vomits when he comes down from the high & realizes what just happened. he made dawderdale orgasm just by talking to her. murph's dice have been waiting for this moment. he's pompous, he's violent, we all know he's queer, & he's already my favorite of the season so far.

plus, the npc's? adding wealwell to the long tradition of needing a gilear or alphonse the mule? and you can't convince me that bert isn't going to be the obscenely magic old man this season he's gonna pull a sawed off shotgun out of his aioli or something he's the plug strut of the season i'm calling it.

As someone who writes/ I have feelings on the fantasy high webtoon?? Like on one hand a lot of the stuff they leave out I understand because writing for a webtoon is incredibly different than a two hour long improved dnd session but also a lot of the changes I can’t find a reason for. Mostly with Fabian tbh

Why is Fabian such a dick? Why is he so unwilling to be in the party? Why does he not like ice cream??? Why does he not fail?

Like I understand why riz is more of the main character (writing for a single main character with other smaller main characters is easier than trying to write for 6 main characters and riz is the most focused on the actual mystery). I understand why they changed how he gets detention (that information is easily portrayed another way and doesn’t messy stuff up. ((Arguments can be made that that plot shouldn’t have changed bc I’m pretty sure it’s the same girl who becomes important later))

I don’t understand why they changed the fight with Johnny spells (changing his very cool car to a van? It couldn’t have always been a van, right? I always imagined it as a sports car)

I just. Theyre weird?? The changes are strange? And I don’t get a lot of them from just a pure writing standpoint

i did enjoy that a central romantic thesis of Mickey 17 was "I love every fucking version of you, past present and future. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else mention how significant it was that Nasha, a Black women was the person who physically put herself on the line to save the baby creeper from the incinerator. I immediately caught that that Micky 17 and Nasha were significantly less hostile to the creepers than almost everyone else (Dorothy). Kenneth Marshall has been panned as an empty, goofy trump stand in, I think this is too dismissive of his character. His politics are christofascist, eugenist and white suprematist. Mickey 17 and Kai mirror Ylfa and Kenneth at the dinner, it’s essentially a double date. When we saw that Mickey had ‘won’ the dinner I thought he’d get to bring Nasha. Then Kenneth tells Kai about her suitably for carrying a white baby “naturally” and everything clicked for me. Kai saw Micky as a novelty and even fights with Nasha over access to the Mickey’s and suggests she’s being greedy by not sharing and disrespects their relationship. She doesn’t even acknowledge the autonomy of Mickey 17 and 18, she’ll take whichever. Early on in the film the ships passengers are warned not to waste energy and calories on having sex. Nasha and Mickey defy this order, regularly but does it matter if they do? Why doesn’t anyone try to stop them? Why are they allowed to live together? Nasha’s Black and Mickey is expendable, he dies and gets reprinted. They are both held in low esteem despite their respective skill and importance. I think the film says a lot politically and most of the interesting stuff has barely been touched upon.

Gorgug means a lot to me as a mixed kid with a racist parent.

I once saw someone on here refer to Gorgug and his parents as an allegory for transracial adoption and I've never forgotten that. It felt so true to me the second I read it. Gorgug growing up being physically different than his family but also perceived differently. Digby and Wilma had to cut off their family to protect Gorgug from their racism. How does that feel for him? Being seen as dangerous and big and scary? It rings so close to being a black man in a white family. Being scared of embracing being a barbarian, talking more white, slouching. Convincing other people you aren't like other orcs, that you aren't like them. Gorgug doesn't rage, he worries. He sings a song when he's mad. And yes that's mostly because Gorgug just isn't an angry person. I believe that. But do you think there's a part of him that doesn't hit back or yell because he knows there will be severe consequences? Do you think he knows that people will look at him, hulking, at seven feet tall and punish him first? And do you think that maybe his parents knew that too, that that's part of why they taught him the song?

The op I'm referencing also pointed out that while Wilma and Digby clearly love Gorgug, they fail him in some ways. And that hits just as hard. These well meaning white people defended their son, they took him in and they love him so much. But they never told him why all of his things break. They never got a bigger house or changed his room. They didn't sit down with Gorgug and talk him through his fear of anger. Of being too big and too scary, of hurting people. They didn't know to. Because they aren't orcs. They'll never understand that part of him, no matter how much they love him. So maybe they just ignored it, maybe they thought the problem would go away.

Something sticks in my chest when I think about Gorgug and his relationship to being an orc. When I think about this giant green kid, in a tiny home with tiny gnome parents. This kid who asks everyone he can find if they're his dad. Because something is missing, even with these parents he loves more than anything . Who love him more than anything. This young person who wants so badly to be an artificer because his gnome parents may not be in his genes but they are a part of him. And he is told that he can't be, that he's too angry and too big and too strong. He won't be able to think in battle. He needs to choose. He needs to decide between his innate rage and his passion for tinkering. But he doesn't decide, because he wants to do both. And he knows he can. He's done it his whole life.
