Also if you haven't watched Persuasion (2022), DON'T! Because it seriously is not worth your time and I truly do not think the writers should be encouraged to try and adapt more works of Austen. Like there are better adaptations of the book out there. If it weren't for the names of the characters I would of mistaken this for an entirely different story.

I will say the actress who played Mary was funny in this and while I hated the movie I found her to be hilarious.

Just finished watching Persuasion (2022) on Netflix and I have to say I am quite disappointed. I feel like the addition of the weird modern slang was way off for the time period. I don't see why they didn't just put the movie in a modern setting, because then the language and weird girl boss energy that they made Anne Eliot into would of made more sense. I wished they didn't try and modernize this so much because it was just bad and not what I wanted at all. Also Mary saying she's an empath, albeit funny, really was my breaking point 😬

Also I'm definitely watching the movie for Northanger Abbey after this because I've been looking through the tags for it and it looks so good! So I will be posting my thoughts on the movie after my read of the novel. I also need to see this scene that everyone is posting about, because it may change my opinion on Henry.

The audacity that John Thorpe had to send away Isabella without Catherine's permission! He is so infuriating and such a selfish man that only thinks of what he wants. Even if I am not sold on Henry Tilney at this point, I still do not like John Thorpe at all! I'm glad Catherine stood her ground this time and blew them off to hang out with Isabella and Henry.

I am undecided on whether I like Henry Tilney as the main love interest for Catherine. While I can see how he is charming and has this witty playful banter about him, he still has an underlying insult to a lot of his praises. Almost like he is giving backhanded compliments most of the time. He praises women on their letter writing skills, but then goes into their faults, or he seems to be poking fun at Catherine, which wouldn't be so bad if she was not so oblivious and did not get his jokes. Idk maybe he will win me over, but so far I'm not his biggest fan. He is still way better than John Thorpe though, who never shuts up about himself.

"She never could learn or understand anything before she was taught; and sometimes not even then, for she was often inattentive, and occasionally stupid"
The narrator truly does not hold back in criticizing people, even with the main character Catherine. Though I still like Catherine despite her ignorance, because she is just so innocent and oblivious that you kind of got to love her. Her obliviousness also makes for a lot of dramatic irony to happen in the plot when she does not see the blatant interest that John Thorpe has for her.

I'm finally reading Austen's Northanger Abbey for the first time and I definitely see why they call this her funniest work. Like the narrator is just so snarky and witty which really adds to the story. Catherine is so naïve and ignorant too and I can't help but laugh at how oblivious she is to certain things like John Thorpe liking her.

We get another instance where the Mr. Wickham character in a Pride and Prejudice adaptation is a creep. In Longbourn he was a straight up pedophile, which I felt was a bit of a leap. Whereas in Pride by Ibi Zoboi, Warren/ Wickham is still a creep and going after younger girls but not to the same extreme as Longbourn's Mr. Wickham. Warren is 17/18 I think in the novel and his wrong doing is trying to get with ZZ's 13 year old sister and also taking nude pictures of Darci's younger sister and spreading them online. Obviously he is a gross guy and I still hate him in this adaptation. You can even say that he is still being portrayed as a pedophile in Pride because he's still going after young girls. Which I kind of agree with even if he is 17 in this book. I think the reason why these two adaptations are portraying him to this extreme is because of the fact that he marries Lydia in Pride and Prejudice. So people are looking at Wickham with a modern lens and seeing how gross their age gap is. Overall I think both portrayals of him may be a little off but still do a good job at making him unlikable.

I really like ZZ or Zuri in this remix of Pride and Prejudice. She is the Lizzie Bennet of the novel, but she also so much more! The first person narration gives the readers a more personal look into her and I love how she has Lizzie's outspokenness and fun attitude, but at the same time Zoboi gives her more nuance by making her passionate about Poetry and wanting to go to college.
