Athy Youths Crash to Suncroft!
This turned out to be a bad day at the office for Brendan Curtis’s young Athy side, who are locked in a three-way battle for league honours with Coill Dubh and Suncroft. All seemed to be going to plan for the south Kildare side when they raced into an early two-goal lead. Midtable Sallins were rocked as early as the fourth minute when a kick out from Athy keeper Mick Keogh was flicked on by Devon Germaine for Gary Dunne to bear down on goal and beat keeper Dan Sweeney from close range. It got better for the title challengers ten minutes later when they doubled their advantage, Dunne volleying home his second of the day from just inside the box after some less than impressive defending from the home side. Sallins steadied the ship and some good defending by Mark Hammersby in particular snuffed out a number of dangerous attacks from Town. It was all to change in the second half however as Sallins began to get the upper hand and it was no surprise when they pulled one back after 55 minutes, Ray Kelly latching onto a loose ball in the box and beating ‘keeper Keogh from twelve yards. Town were now looking vulnerable and the Sallins comeback was completed in the 71st minute when Steven Sweeney went on a run up the right wing and sent over an inviting cross, which Ray Kelly side-footed to the net. It was backs to the wall for Sallins for the remainder of the game but they defended stoutly with Hannersby, Billy Archbold, Tom Lee and Dillon Gaffney excelling at the back. Mick Walsh had a good chance to steal the three points for Athy but missed the target from close range and substitute Shane Foley was unlucky to see his drive come back off the crossbar with Sweeney beaten and in a final attack Sallins keeper Dan Sweeney stood tall to deny Nathan Robinson, who was clean through. Athy must now win their last two games against Naas United and Bush Celtic and hope that Coill Dubh and Suncroft drop points in their remaining games, if they are to lift the Evening Herald Youths Division title but in the meantime their minds will be firmly focused on their Stafford Cup final tie against Coill Dubh on Saturday next. Sallins FC: Dan Sweeney, Billy Archbold, Martk Hammersby, Tom Lee, Dillon Gaffney, Ray Kelly, Ian Fox, Dave McGrath, Sean Whitson, Steve Sweeney, Eamon Keegan. Subs: Jake McLoughlin, Rob Coughlin, Jim Nevin, Eoin Mesiot. Athy Town: Mick Keogh, Damon Fogarty, Wesley Clare, Ryan Clare, Gavin Moore, Aaron Meade, Corey Lammon, Mick Walsh, Nathan Robinson, Devon Germaine, Gary Dunne. Subs: Stephen Flynn, Shane Foley.
