Next up let's have a look at the often overlooked
Bird wyverns
Among the first classifications, along with flying wyverns, bird wyverns also show incredible diversity among their species.
Bird wyverns are named for showing distinct avian features as a large part of their chimeric traits. They can be divided into two main subclasses.

"true" bird wyverns have a body plan similar to modern flying wyverns, two legs and two wings.
They are often made distinct from flying wyverns by the presence of avian feathers or a beak.
This group is the more diverse of the bird wyvern subclasses and contain some of the most intelligent individuals of the species. Bird wyverns in general are the most intelligent of the wyverns and of monsters in general.
These bird wyverns can range from having only a few details that set them apart from flying wyverns to looking almost identical to a standard, non wyvern, bird.

The other subclass is the "footed" bird wyverns. These individuals are known for having a bipedal stance with long strong legs.
Footed bird wyverns are the most numerous of the wyverns. Being made up mostly of small pack hunting predators that have high populations compared to most other wyverns.
As such, along with their comparably low combat power, these wyverns are usually the first challenge a hunter will face. Their high populations and quick reproduction actually make capturing pack leaders of these wyverns popular to use in training for up and coming hunters in arenas.
Like their cousins, these wyverns are known for impressive intelligence, using complex pack hunting techniques. This group even includes a candidate for the smartest wyvern in the form of kulu-ya-ku.
And that was a rundown on the bird wyverns, thank you for reading.

Next in our list we look at
Brute wyverns
Brute wyverns stand in a very similar manner to footed bird wyverns, but are differentiated and named for their muscular bodies and often great size.
These wyverns are, once again, extremely diverse and fill a variety of niches in their ecosystems.

The most well known niche a brute wyvern fills is a large carnivore. Such as the deviljho or anjanath.
Brute wyverns like these use their large size to take large prey, defend their meals, or take kills from other predators.
These brute wyverns are often belligerent, to say the least, and make up the most commonly hunted "powerful" monsters by the guild.
Brute wyverns of this general build can also fill in other roles. Such as the insect eating barroth, or herbivorous giants like durambaros and banbaro.

The other major split in brute wyverns comes in the form of hammer-jaw wyverns.
This group currently only contains radobaan and uragaan.
They are named for their extremely large and hard lower jaws, which are used to either break up bones or ore, depending on the species.
They seem to thrive in unusual environments, like volcanos and the rotten vale, but have not been spotted in more traditional environments.
Their ability to roll around makes them incredibly fast for their size and they tend to have few natural predators.
That's brute wyverns for you, thank you for reading and I hope you'll come back to read again.

Let's continue on with a crash course on
Flying wyverns
Flying wyverns are the most diverse and widespread of the wyverns and were among many of the first monsters classified by the guild and more are constantly being found.
The most basic form of flying wyvern is best shown by the rathalos.
These types of flying wyverns gave the group their name. Known for being exceptional flyers, rathalos himself being known as the king of the skies, they most often hunt from the air.
Though they're not always large predators, scale bats of the new world hunt insects at night and diablos are herbivores.
Overall, this body plan is shown to be very successful and is seen in many bird wyverns alongside flying wyverns.

This success made creatures like tigrex an anomaly when he was discovered, but research revealed some interesting details about flying wyvern evolution.
Flying wyverns actually evolved from quadrupeds that were exceptional runners, like tigrex. Evolving from a theorized common ancestor in wyvern rex, which tigrex shares many similarities with.
These flying wyverns are still represented today and have been shown to be very adaptable, from barioth in icy tundras to nargacuga in dense jungles.

Finally we have the distantly related giants like akantor.
These monsters are thought to be very ancient, living during the height of the elder dragons and competing with them at their peak.
While technically flying wyverns they are only very distantly related to most other flying wyverns and you'd have to go pretty far back in their evolutionary tree to find the common link.
And there was the crash course on flying wyverns, thank you.

For my first announcement here I'll briefly go over what I define a wyvern as.
Wyverns are a wide and diverse group of monsters that can be found in nearly every ecosystem and can be observed filling many ecological niches.
They're defined as creatures that have distinct chimeric features (features from different types of animals). Most commonly lizard characteristics mixed with something else.
These chimeric traits range from being warm blooded (most all wyverns are) to having traits very similar to another group of animals (such as bird wyverns with birds)
This intense diversity has allowed wyverns to become the dominant group of monsters in the world.
I'll be going over each individual type of wyvern in future announcements.
Tiberius Sharp, signing off.

I suppose introductions are in order.
My name is Tiberius Sharp, I'm a guild Researcher specializing in monster behavior and ecology.
I've set up this messaging board so that people can inquire to me any questions about the creatures we share our world with.
I'll also be publishing some of my own observations and theories here.
I'm hoping word can spread about what I'm doing so that knowledge about our natural world can spread with it.
