Tifa fought for purchase, for a handheld, for anything.

How long could one survive in Mako?

No memory of statistics. SOLDIERs could survive this. But they likely didn’t get tipped into a lake during an earthquake. The glare around her was bright through her closed eyes. Cloud. Where was Cloud? Needed to see-

The light faded. The world darkened. The feeling of movement halted. Something jarred against her foot. No. She was standing on something. Risked opening her eyes. Ahead was a singular spot of light. She struggled towards it, movements awkward and unwieldy. She zig-zagged towards the light.

Barret’s thumb stroked her skin. “Happy?” he murmured in her ear. “Mmmhmm. Very much so. You?” Tifa turned her head and kissed his shoulder. “Yeah. It’s peaceful out here. You forget when you got machines hummin’ around ya all the time.” Barret drew a deep breath, eyes closed and tilting his face into the sun. “Could get used to a life like this.” “We could.” For a long time, they couldn’t think beyond the immediate future. There was always one more fight, one more attack to plan against Shinra. When Sephiroth’s madness became apparent, it wasn’t like they could simply abandon all they’d worked so hard for. In the end, they saved the planet they were trying to protect. It still felt strange to be able to enjoy it. “Build a little house, with a playroom for Marlene and a view of the open fields.”

In her youth, Tifa dreamed—of a fairytale life, of chivalrous knights warding off dragons, of princesses and castles, of anything that wasn’t simple, boring Nibelheim. She devoured the bedtime stories her mother wove for her. When she was no longer alive for storytelling, Tifa read books to satiate the desire.

Maybe that was why she made the promise with Cloud. She was no princess and her humble home was no castle, but if he succeeded, he could rescue her when she needed it. The details were loose and blurry; the peril could lie in a monster or the banal country life. So long as someone swooped in to save her, Tifa accepted it.

They weren’t close friends nor did Tifa recall most of their conversations together, but Cloud had asked her to meet him. The least he could do in return was honor her one, silly request.
