Every once in a while I come across someone who's indignant that Rory "let Emily remodel the pool house for her," or something similar to that. Either she was ungrateful, or she was entitled for even accepting it. Now, I'm not going to claim that Rory always handled everything in the best way (I do have questions about her decision to cut her grandparents off so completely right after this, because even if they were misguided they WERE trying to help her), but I do know what it's like to have an emotionally manipulative grandmother, so... This? I'm not going to judge her for. And here's why:

Rory never asked Emily to remodel the pool house for her. She would have been more than happy with it the way it was, and seemed kind of steamrolled by the whole thing. Emily OFFERED. And when Rory assured her it wasn't necessary, Emily INSISTED! She "was going to do it anyway!" she said. She'd been "looking for an excuse!" Emily's love language is Gift Giving. Rory knows this. Rory accepting and playing along with what her grandmother assured her she was going to do anyway was Rory trying to accept the gift of her grandmother's Love. But, as I know all too well, what appears to be an "offer of Love" from a family member like Emily isn't just a "gift," it's emotional collateral. Because of this Big Favor she's insisted on doing, any perceived slight or disappointment or "rejection" or disobedience is now "ingratitude" and a betrayal. The "gift" is weaponized, it's bait set in a trap, it's emotional blackmail. This is why Lorelai never wants to ask her parents for anything. Because she knows this.

When Rory moved in, Emily was "going to redecorate anyway," but when Rory moved out? She apparently should have thrown herself in front of the walls and begged her grandmother not to do it if she didn't want to owe her grandmother everything. I can't believe there are people who don't see how horribly manipulative that is or who think that's an acceptable way to behave. In reality, I really don't think there was any way Rory could have rejected Emily's offer without Emily taking it as a personal rejection. It was a trap. And those kinds of emotional traps are... Not ok. You have to walk away from that, even if they try to spin it as "rude and ungrateful." ASP specializes in these kinds of complicated, muddy family dynamics. Was Emily trying to love Rory? Yes. And Rory recognized that and THAT is the reason she didn't fight it harder. But Emily doesn't know how to separate Love from Control, and that is a very real problem.
