post-vampire bite clem short story under the cut ❤️
I wrote this a while ago but I never posted it soooo. inspired by a verse me and @hostyle17 were working on
tw for general violence and trauma
The car was smoking behind her. In the back, there was nothing. The only proof she had — the only memory — had disappeared in a cloud of dust.
Each step forward was a miracle. She felt as if her legs were going to fail her any second; they had before. Blood, fresh blood, trickled down her neck to her shirt, soaking into her last clean piece of clothing. Perhaps that could be her proof. The cops wouldn’t do anything, but it wasn’t for them anyway.
A phone booth stood in the distance. Before she knew it, she was standing inside, pushing one, two coins in. Her nails rattled against the shiny metal. Another miracle: she got all the coins in without dropping them.
The dial tone on the other side of the phone hummed in her ear, followed by each familiar beep. The booth was old enough to have a rotary dial still, thankfully. She couldn’t remember the numbers, but she knew the motions by heart.
It rang one, two, three times.
“Hello?” The voice was groggy. She must’ve just woken up.
“Mommy?”
“…”
“Mom, I’m tired. I want to come home.”
“…”
“I’m — …”
The dial tone came back. Clementine held the phone to her ear, staring ahead at her dirty reflection in the glass. Slowly, she lowered her hand and let the phone rest back in its cradle, before stepping out of the box.
The car was still smoking behind her. In the back, there was nothing. She had to remember that.
Each step forward was a miracle. Her legs would give out on her soon. Clementine kept walking.
