FINAL RENDERS
Water Wall Features at the entrance of the Cool House and the Tropical House
I wanted the water to be the first thing people experienced when entering the glass houses. The Cool and Tropical house has water wall features either side of the entrances. Water plays a very important role in the gardens. It is essential to the life of the gardens and is symbolised in the water features. Cold water is used at the entry to the cool house and hot water for the tropical house. The tropical plants need a warm climate to thrive which makes the space very warm and almost stuffy if you’re in there for too long. As steam is a symbol of heat, hot water is used for the entrance of the Tropical House.

FINAL RENDERS
Waterfall Arches surrounding the pond
To activate the pond, I’ve installed an interactive water feature. Visitors can control it by turning the different taps; which increases and decreases the water pressure from each individual arch. My aim was to add an element of play to the Domain Winter Gardens pond are. As well as this, it adds sound and movement to the area.

FINAL RENDERS
Entrance to Fernery
My first thought I had about the fernery, was how quiet and serene it was. To me, it had an almost eerie feel when wandering through. To emit this feeling, I created a foggy/misty threshold. From the water, fog flows from the machines to create a mysterious and eerie effect to the entrance of the fernery. Its aim is to make you want to go and find out what is beyond the fog as you can't see through it clearly.

From the feedback I got after Mid-Semester Reviews, I decided to rethink the tunnel idea and design something that is more free flowing and doesn’t force visitors through the space as they would miss out on the rest of the space. I still want to activate the space and have indications of where to go. I also want to add more interaction with water.

Design Change
I started to lose interest in my food event idea as I couldn’t find something interesting enough to relate to my first thought of using ice. I went back to my artist images from week 1/2 and the idea of water ‘tunnels’ came to mind.
I started to sketch multiple ideas of how the tunnels would work. From little scattered arches to fully enclosed tunnels. I wanted to create a structured journey that forces you to visit each space because to me when I arrived I wasn’t sure what was there and where to go.

Through more brainstorming and looking at event timelines it has made me think about doing a food event but with ice as the main factor. The idea of preserving food through freezing. As preserving is the process of keeping something value alive, I thought it would connect with the historical aspects of the Domain Winter Gardens. Because there’s a lot of history to do with the gardens, it is important to ‘preserve’ it and keep the history alive.
Alternative ideas for the ice/food event:
- Freezing the plants
- Eating off plates
- Floor of ice
- Tables of ice
- Lights in ice
- Climate change/ice melting - educate visitors on these issues
- How to preserve foods especially the foods that grow in the gardens.
