while he isn't entirely sure he believes her - or, at the very least, isn't sure that's the entire truth, as though there might be something she's not saying - logan nods and lets his fingertips brush at the little clover she's tucked by his ear. it's a sweet gesture and it endears him to her so strongly, he almost sways on the spot in her direction.
" don't be embarrassed -- please? we're friends, right? " he never had friends before westchester, not many kids his age in the neighbourhood and the uncanny way he always seemed to know things put the ones in his class off in the way kids know to cross the street by the scary house. like he was haunted. like they knew there was something wrong on instinct. (homo sapien has a wicked sense of self-preservation.) the thought of losing one of the few he does have isn't a pleasant one - her, josh, josie, sean. he doesn't want to lose it.
" if you want, we can just -- pretend like it didn't happen. no big deal. "
he's struggling to sleep lately; that old familiar nagging at the back of his mind yanking on him when he least expects it, a kidney punch every now and then, in unanticipated bursts so he can never predict when it will strike. it's what wakes him up. there's no real destination in mind when he wanders downstairs but the light under the door and the thought it's luz, the taste of hot chocolate suddenly bursting across his tongue when he thinks it, gets him to push through. it is her, of course. and she asks if he would like some and he says yes, of course.
( sometimes he hates knowing. sometimes he wishes he'd just push the door open and be wrong. in a decade or so, josie will show up at his door and he will have learned not to listen to that little voice in his head predicting every move long enough to be surprised. )
they sit side by side and he tries not to look too hard at the camisole because it's not nice and josh said she liked sean and logan is her friend. friends can have a crush on a friend and it not be a big deal. he will not be that guy. it's why it doesn't mean anything when she presses closer and it doesn't mean anything when he tucks the hair behind her ear as gently as he dares and it's why it doesn't mean anything when she kisses him -- it shouldn't mean anything. won't mean anything.
except he kisses her back, and she pulls him closer and he's never kissed anybody like this before -- josie kissed him at new years but it hadn't been like this, it had been because he was just there and it was the ball drop. he had been embarrassed. he's not embarrassed now.
at least not until she's gone.
he looks for her all morning, at lunch, in between classes. he searches the courtyard and the gardens and the hallways hoping for a flash of familiar hair and shadow, but every time he thinks he sees her, she's gone. and he knows that it was her, which means she's avoiding him. he doesn't get a chance to catch her until that afternoon, and he drops down beside her on the grass with a thermos of tea and a danish.
"you're avoiding me."
