ARTFIGHT 2025 EXCLUSIVE DESIGNS — The Fate Weaver (crystalline) and The Butterfly Effect (fossilized)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are many things we don’t understand about this world, many secrets hidden from our conscious minds in plain sight… but don’t fret! Sometimes you need some cogs to come loose, to build something better, grander!
Hello everyone! This year I’m really gonna try to hunker down and participate in Art Fight! And thanks to Art Fight’s team themes this year, I was inspired to make exclusive designs for the game and reveal some more intentions with Pupa Project as a whole! I have much more than just the first “part” of the story conceptualized, and making these designs allows me to share some fun insight into those ideas! :D
This year, I’ve decided that Amaryllis will be my featured character! As of drafting up this post, the last couple days have been very rough for me, with both depressive and psychotic symptoms acting up. And because of that I found myself drawing Amaryllis more and more, helping me feel better about what I’m struggling with. And it’s for that reason I want to center her as my main character for Art Fight this year! Of course, though, Blythe is featured with her as she can use her newly acquired fencing skills to deflect any attacks!
All the links you need will be here down below!! 🐛vvv

Happy Birthday, Little Doll 🦋
Tumblr media
Today is Blythe’s birthday!
I wanted to do something special, but because of many events happening all this week, I only had time to create this art piece!
I wanted to make this a Draw This in Your Style type of thing! No prizes or deadline, just for fun if anyone would like to draw their own version of this image!! 💓🐛 if you do, please tag me so I can see and reblog it!! :D
Blythe as a character has come a long way. I don’t know who is following me who remembers, but she started out as a creepypasta oc! And now she and her universe have taken a life of their own, expanding and developing in ways that still has me learning more about myself and how I process the world around me! Blythe is an oc that means a lot to me! So I wanted to celebrate her birthday! And how cute is it that it’s on Friday the 13th this year? >:3c
We grow despite it all 🦋

Bestie the project is great but NGL I cannot take it seriously since pupa means butt in my language LMAO
BAHAHA THATS SO FUNNY
Okay, I realized I never explained the name so this is what it means in terms of the project:
Pupa stage for bugs is the immature stage between larva and adult. So you know when caterpillars are in their cocoon? That’s the pupa stage! It’s the stage they are undergoing metamorphosis! To eventually become beautiful butterflies (or beetles or bees or moths etc etc)
HOWEVER!! There is a double meaning at play! 🤔
Pupa is also a Latin word! The original meaning of this word is equivalent to the English word “Doll” or “Puppet” or could even be used to describe a little girl! (From my understanding!!) The medical field has many terms that stem from Latin or even Greek! So that was also part of the inspiration for the project’s name!
EITHER WAY!! Language is very fun!! (and very funny in this case BAHAH) Thank you for sharing, anon! You gave me an excuse to info dump a little bit (*´-`)

The Faulty Machine ⚙️
Lore/Story Explanation | WARNING: This section will have spoilers for the VN as it details the full story
Pupa Project takes place in a vaguely Victorian English setting. I have not set it at any specific dates as I have pulled inspiration from across the time period.
Society is a fragile thing, as are human egos. Everyone is destined to play their part and fit into the structure that has been determined for us. After all, why should it change? It has gotten us this far. And should you not fit into the necessary slot, perhaps it is you who is the problem. This world needs able-bodied, able-minded workers. You mustn’t stick out, you mustn’t jam the cogs, should you break the machine completely…
Our story begins one year after Blythe Waldrop has been admitted to Lepidoptera. After being designated to doctor after doctor and being mistreated by the medical system, she is surprised when her new doctor, Dr. Laurence Caldwell, treats her with respect and dignity. Humane in his approach, Blythe quickly takes a liking to him, as do his other patients, Thomas Phillipps, Amaryllis Cook, and Henrietta Vivian Davis. In getting to know his patients, he starts to theorize that perhaps an essential part of rehabilitation is community and peer support. Thanks to this notion, Blythe, Thomas, Amaryllis, and Henrietta become well acquainted and even become close. Amaryllis gets to care for a child like she never could, Henrietta is treated with understanding and patience, Thomas is relied on and given a comfortable sense of responsibility, and Blythe is surrounded by people finally looking out for her best interest.
One day while enjoying some recreational time outside, Henrietta throws the ball the group was tossing around too far. Before anyone can react, Blythe proudly runs off to retrieve it, disappearing into the forest for a short while. This is where she meets him.
Mr. Gryllidae is whimsical and strange, much like many other visions Blythe has had. He is a mechanical cricket, humanoid, but a cricket nonetheless! He speaks to her enthusiastically, kind and expressive, and when he notices it is the ball she is after, he picks it up for her. His coppery fingers place the ball in her hands and pat her head before he bows to her in a gentlemanly way and takes his leave. Blythe trots back to the group with the ball in hand and informs them of a new friend she had made.
While things are looking up for Dr. Caldwell’s new patients, pressure is building up among the staff, particularly for Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Samuel Montague. Being next in line to uphold this institution after his father, Dr. Montague has grown increasingly frustrated with his colleague’s tremendous success. Why couldn’t he make such breakthroughs? And how dare those patients gain a sense of self assurance! Dr. Montague confides in his only support, Nurse Cassandra Beechworth, who would do anything to help him.
From here, the asylum starts to become a colder place once again. And every time Mr. Gryllidae can visit Blythe, he notices how dire the situation is becoming. Not just for her, but for her friends as well. He decides he cannot stand by while they are punished for trying to live. So, dressed in his finest attire, Mr. Gryllidae sets off to have a private meeting with Dr. Caldwell to form a plan.
There are some things humans can just not accept. There are many reasons why someone may snap. Stress, pressure, your entire world view being threatened. When Mr. Gryllidae appears before Dr. Caldwell, Mr. Gryllidae who was supposed to be a hallucination, Mr. Gryllidae who was just the machinations of a sick little girl, Mr. Gryilldae who was everything humans are supposed to fear, it seems to shatter the delicately designed reality the doctor found himself in. Perhaps Dr. Montague was right. Perhaps Dr. Caldwell was just as bad as them. But he wouldn’t continue to let himself be pulled under by insanity. He would do whatever it takes to rid this world of this threat. He had been infected… infested.
Dr. Caldwell exterminates these parasites, he sets fire to the asylum, leaving everyone but him to die inside. But as he stands outside the building, starting to grapple with what he had just done, his mind wanders to one singular thought. What would happen to…
Blythe looks out to him through the window on the second story. Her escape routes had been blocked by smoke and falling beams. The only option would be to jump out the window. After all, Dr. Caldwell is out there! He could catch her and help her! So, comforted by voices that tell her she’ll be okay, she smashes through the glass, jumping and plummeting to the pavement below her.
The scene is grisly. No survivors to be seen and the fire roaring into the night. Mr. Gryllidae does not fret, however. Carefully, he picks Blythe up and brings her to his manor. This wouldn’t be her end. Oh no, this was just the beginning. She would be given the second chance she deserved, one filled with tasty cake and beautiful dresses. He would not fail her like so many before him had. They could dismantle the machine together. And use those parts to pave a new way for all those like them.

Inspirations 💡
This project takes inspiration from a lot of my experiences and interests. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been interested in the Victorian era, especially their fashion. Perhaps because of how I see the world, I have also always been comforted by “creepy” and unconventional things. The dead, the macabre, I find a lot of solace in the feared and misunderstood, and so this world is filled with dreadfully whimsical aesthetics!
One of my most common and persistent hallucinations has to do with bugs. Because of this, for a long time I feared bugs and often felt a lot of anxiety around them. The only ones I realized I felt comforted by was butterflies. They are big and bright and during one small episode, brought me a sense of calm. Ever since then, I have decided to take my love for collecting bones and specimen and extend that to making art with pinned bugs. As of right now, I’ve only pinned butterflies, but being able to work with and make art out of things I once feared gives me a sense of control and understanding. Through safe exposure to the bugs I once freaked out about, I have found myself fascinated by them. Hence, the bug theme for Pupa Project!
When it comes to actual story, I am heavily inspired by the game Fran Bow, as well as games I watched playthroughs of as a child like Mad Father and Ib. Originally, I wanted to make Pupa Project an rpg maker style game, and perhaps I will make it one day! But as of right now, I think the easiest way for me to learn to code and put something together is in visual novel form! I grew up watching YouTubers play Japanese horror games and they have a huge impact on not just this project, but all my art! I want to make something that feels nostalgic!
To-Do Checklist 📋
Finish line art of Dr. Caldwell sprites
Continue writing out script

as someone who tried and failed to make a vn during my first psychotic meltdown, im keeping an eye on this space because im curious for more information on this world and characters...
Tumblr media
HALLO THERE!! Welcome welcome!! I’m so glad you’re keeping an eye here! :D
Right now I’m working on creating a Pupa Project master post that will include lore, links, and a check list for me to keep track of what I gotta do! The full story will be detailed in that post! Because it details the whole thing, obviously it contains spoilers, but if you want to learn more about the world, it will be there for you and anyone else who wants to read it!
I work very slowly, so I wanted to write out the basic lore so anyone who wants to understand the story before I finish anything can! As for characters, I love all of them so much so I will always be posting doodles and sharing info!!
I hope you’re doing well, Anon!! And lucky you, you’re the first Pupa Project ask… we must celebrate… 🍰🍴

“Lepidoptera Lunatic Asylum prides itself on reshaping misfortunate minds and progressing humanity’s understanding of the inner psyche. Here in Lepidoptera, we ensure to rehabilitate those thought to be broken beyond repair. And if reintroduction into society will not work, they will be safe and happy in our helping hands.”

Welcome to Pupa Project! 🦋
Pupa Project is a personal oc project that I have been working on for a bit now. Originally starting from the creation of the main character in the series, Blythe Waldrop, I grew increasingly attached to her story, themes, and universe. Because of how much this project means to me, I plan to at least attempt to make Pupa Project into a visual novel. Pupa Project is my means of regaining control on an often ill-portrayed narrative. Growing up schizophrenic, I have acquired many opinions, thoughts, ideas, and experiences I feel many may have not even considered. Pupa Project is my love letter not just to my fellow psychotic people, but I think, most importantly, to the child me that didn’t think they’d ever recover.
Disclaimer: All character developments and scenes are mostly inspired by my lived experience. Please understand that everything is a spectrum and this project is solely based on symptoms I have dealt with personally. Some things may also be historically inaccurate for the time period in favor of telling a story!

(art/introduction sheets below!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Blythe Waldrop — Age: 11 — The youngest patient in the asylum!
Blythe Waldrop is a truly remarkable little girl! From a young age, she understood very well that she was different. Often times at social events, she would be picked on or teased until eventually other kids started avoiding her all together! She spoke oddly to them, lacked cheerful smiles or bratty frowns, and was content watching ants march around her feet carrying crumbs of cake instead of playing. She often told her mother and father of things she heard and saw, to which they believed to be just part of an active imagination. However, at one such important social gathering displaying her mother’s newest art collection, Blythe became completely untethered from reality and was tormented by visions and beliefs unfit for a productive member of society. In her wake, she had torn apart the art pieces she believed to be watching her, taunting her, and made quite a scene in front of her family’s high-society friends. As you can imagine, this did not go over well with her dear mother and father.
Now at Lepidoptera Asylum, Blythe remains aloof (when she’s not having outbursts.) Doctor after doctor have tried to treat her, but to no avail. The other patients don’t look her way, some out of fear and some out of disinterest. They wonder if she even feels… How does someone so young end up so mad?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Henrietta Vivian Davis — Age: 18 — The liveliest patient in the asylum!
Henrietta is an energetic force! In young adolescence, Henrietta proved to be very opinionated, very sociable, to the point where it was hard to keep her ‘on track.’ Coming from a very wealthy family, there were expectations for the young girl. She must hold her tongue, she must be polite and demure, however, no matter how hard she tried, these things did not come naturally to her. Worrying for their daughter’s future, Henrietta was arranged to be married to a much older man at the age of 17. Henrietta fought this tooth and nail, but there was nothing she could do. While in her fiancé’s company, he would prove to be very… forceful. As the days got closer to their wedding ceremony, and his touchiness seemed to get worse, Henrietta decided there was only one way out. Having vast knowledge of medieval torture methods and historical assassinations, Henrietta got the idea to poison his drink while at a family dinner. This plan ultimately failed, and when it was discovered that Henrietta had attempted to kill him, the courts ruled that she was criminally insane. She was sent to Lepidoptera Asylum by court order.
In the asylum, she seems to be overjoyed! She speaks to anyone who will listen, wanders around gleefully, and is happy to be far away from her family and ex-fiancé. The only thing that causes her agitation is when male staff or patients approach her. She has a tendency to lash out should they get too close.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thomas Phillipps — Age: 23 — The gentlest patient in the asylum!
Thomas has always been sure of two things: 1) Who he is, and 2) The world is dangerous and completely unpredictable. As a child, Thomas expressed many worries and had peculiar habits to soothe his overthinking. In social settings, he always had great discomfort in how he was supposed to dress and act and speak. Noticing these patterns, his mother and father asked him one day what would make him happy. Finally being given some control over his own life, Thomas expressed his desire to be seen as male, and his family helped him from then on out. Thomas’ father taught him many things, mostly everything to do with blacksmithing. However, as he grew, his worries grew with him. Intrusive thoughts paralyzed him and made him severely anxious around sharp tools. The what ifs swirled in his head and he grew increasingly troubled by such obsessive thoughts. To make matters worse, rumors of Thomas being born a female started to circulate in their well-off community. Paranoid that his parents might take the brunt of such accusations, and his anxieties keeping him from being able to defend them, Thomas sought out medical treatment for his obsessions and compulsions and was ultimately recommended to Lepidoptera.
Once he got settled into the asylum, Thomas feels a tad more at ease. He figures that if anything were to happen, he is away from the public and he cannot harm them. The only downside is that doctors and nurses insist his identity is also the product of insanity. He strongly disagrees and stands his ground in that regard.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Amaryllis Cook — Age: 35 — The delicatest patient in the asylum!
Amaryllis is a very warm soul! That’s why it is such a shame her mind has become something that torments her. She hadn’t been like this in her past. No, as a child and young woman, Amaryllis was bright and cheerful. She was incredibly skilled with needlework, happily married to her husband, and they lived in the perfect home where they wanted to raise children. There was just one problem, one the happy couple couldn’t possibly have known. Amaryllis couldn’t have children. They had tried to conceive multiple times, only for it to end in devastation. With each failed attempt, Amaryllis felt herself slipping further and further into the dark. The last strike was when they finally did conceive, but the child had died in the birthing process. This was the last straw. Amaryllis became inconsolable, maddened by grief and guilt and disappointment. Her husband tried to be her rock, but even he could not keep her safe from herself. He had taken her to see a doctor, and at the doctor’s suggestion, he admitted her to Lepidoptera Asylum.
In the asylum, Amaryllis is one of the more rowdy patients. She lashes out in hysterical, crying fits, making every attempt to “punish” herself for what she believes is her fault. Her depressive state only worsened when she realized her husband was not coming to visit her. Because of the danger she poses to herself, she is usually kept calm with newfound sedatives.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Doctor Laurence Caldwell — Age: 46 — The newest doctor in the asylum!
Not much is known about Dr. Caldwell, and he prefers to keep it that way. A man of mysterious origin, he has been recently hired at Lepidoptera Asylum and has big plans for progress. Dr. Caldwell is unlike most doctors of his time, mild mannered and pragmatic, he is immensely trustworthy both in the eyes of patients and fellow staff. He has quite odd social habits, often fidgety and preoccupied with his own theories, making for a poor conversationalist. Perhaps this is why his patients take to him so well. He believes that the path to recovery is much more… humane… than many others would think.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Doctor Samuel Montague — Age: 32 — The smartest doctor in the asylum!
Dr. Montague comes from a long line of accomplished doctors! That is why it is imperative that he succeed and continue the line of genius. Creative with his treatment methods, Dr. Montague feels he must push the medical bounds in order to strive for great success. No one ever got what they wanted by being temperate and docile. Many of the general public favor his ideas, the patients themselves… not so much… but what do they know?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nurse Cassandra Beechworth — Age: 26 — The strictest nurse in the asylum!
Nurse Beechworth worked hard for her position! She had admired Dr. Montague’s work when she saw him in action during her studies, and vowed to do what she must in order to progress humanity’s understanding of the brain. Once hired to be a nurse in Lepidoptera, she swiftly made a name for herself among patients. Her temper is fiery and her patience is thin, and when a patient strays from the correct path, she is there to guide them back.

I think…. I THINK… Blythe’s standard sprites are done :3
Sprite making is so tedious OTL I have to finish all of hers, Dr. Caldwell’s, Dr. Montague’s, and Nurse Cassandra’s so I can start working on the first chapter of the VN! I also have to conjure up some backgrounds and scene drawings! Much to do! I should make a checklist… :0c
In the meantime, while I slowly gather my assets, I might make a pupa project master post to include information about the project, organize any asks I may get about it (wink wink 😼), and just generally keep track of what I have to do! I also thought about making pupa project its own carrd/website thingy! Just for fun!
I’m so appreciative of all the love I got on pupa project’s proper debut post! I read all the tags and comments people would add and it warmed my heart so much! I continue to thank everyone who is interested in this little project of mine and my friends for always hyping me up! Because of a little thing called avolition, I struggle a lot with staying motivated and finishing projects, but this one means so much to me I want to break through and continue working on it at all costs. I thank anyone interested in advance for your patience if sometimes I move at a snail’s pace 🐌 <- for your viewing pleasure.
Please, if you have any questions about the characters, universe, inspirations, don’t be shy to ask me! I could literally talk about pupa project all day! And it helps me stay motivated! ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ
