The Long Way Home: Notes

The Breakdown: Epistolary, handwavey take on time travel (don’t look too closely pls because I’m a fantasy person masquerading as a sci-fi)

This is a time-traveling sapphic, epistolary story about San Francisco and opera. I was struggling with writer’s block in terms of coming up with ideas after a major move when I wrote this, and this was one of the only things I could write. It took multiple drafts to get the pacing right because I was too enamored with Sofia’s voice and forgot that the plot had to come first. This was definitely one of those stories that I wasn’t sure had a shot at getting published but ended up finding a wonderful home within a few months of me putting it out there, which was awesome.

The lighthouse at the end of the world’s inclusion was inspired by the lighthouse in the queer movie classic Happy Together. In the movie, there’s a lighthouse at the very end of Earth in Tierra del Fuego that we see Chang visit in one of the final scenes. I really liked that image of the lighthouse, so I went out and did some research and found one that would work for the purposes of this story. The facts Sofia mentions in the letter from the lighthouse (which isn’t the same one as in the movie) are all from my research. Any and all mistakes you might encounter are on me.
