luke's and calum's solo projects are opposite sides of the same coin... everything is cyclical and I'm upset about it vs everything is cyclical and that's just how the world goes, it was a phase (nostalgic) vs it was a phase (and so is this one), waxing and waning of the moon, high and low tide, this is an incomplete thought but I keep having it

i've spent some time thinking about cake's solo projects and the ways they're similar and the ways they're different, and like you i have also kind of struggled to form a clear thought on it, but i'm going to try.

at a very basic level, they have similar musical inspiration in terms of the artists and styles and sounds they like. their sonic and aesthetic of their music is complementary. their songs are very ambient, and there's obviously thought put into establishing a feeling within the sounds themselves in addition to the lyrics.

beyond that, they both see the beauty in sadness and enjoy writing from that perspective. they often use their music as an outlet for the more sad or vulnerable parts of their thoughts, but that doesn't necessarily represent their overall state of being, and they've both said as much.

they write about similar themes and bring a similar perspective on those themes. they are both thoughtful and introspective in their songwriting, but they also both try to maintain a level of vagueness to leave songs open to interpretation so they're universally relatable in addition to being very personal to them.

so lots of similarities, but i also see some distinctions in how they execute these things. obviously this is all very much based in my personal interpretation - i'm sure many people see it very differently.

to massively oversimplify, for me it's a bit like they are writing books with similar plots and themes with covers that look a lot alike, but luke is writing in first person pov and calum is writing in third person pov. figuratively. allow me to explain.

luke's lyrics feel very present and specific. it's like an inner monologue. he uses a lot of internal inspiration - writing about his perspective on things, how he feels, how he interprets those feelings and tries to make sense of them. even when he's dissecting the past, the song exists in present tense, a reflection of how he felt in the moment vs how he feels now. he's talked about how even when he tries to write a song from a different perspective (shakes), it still inevitably filters through his own, so his outlook is always present in his songs somehow. first person.

calum's lyrics feel more passive/observant and abstract. he's watching and describing and translating it into a flowery story. he's drawing on internal inspiration as well, but often he seems to use an external source - something someone else said (dfylm), something he's observed in his friends (sweetdreams), a movie he watched (streetwise, dark circles) - as a mechanism to channel his thoughts and perspective through. he sort of takes his thoughts and feelings and feeds them into a collective experience in order to explore them and reflect on them. third person.

and because i mentioned this in reference to both their processes, i want to say that i think continuous reflection on feelings and experiences is a healthy, positive thing. we should constantly be doing that internal work, because life keeps happening around us. nothing is static, we are constantly adapting and changing, and it's good to be self aware about it. it's also really good to have songs that help us through that process. <3
