PS IN PRACTICE - Did you know that Women & Performance was founded by PS Students in 1983? Since the journal's inception, W&P has operated as a feminist collective, publishing interdisciplinary feminist scholarship on performance. PS students regularly contribute pieces featured in the journal in addition to serving on its editorial staff.

PS IN PRACTICE - Performance Studies Department founder and Professor Emeritus, Richard Schechner, is the editor of TDR: The Drama Review. PS students have the exciting opportunity to work with the TDR team by contributing to their quarterly publication. A forum for radical performance and theoretical intervention, TDR's work engages performance in its aesthetic, historical, social, economic, political, and theoretical contexts.

PS in PRACTICE -Our department has a unique relationship with NYU's Hemispheric Institute. Hemi's Founding Director, Diane Taylor, is a PS faculty. Their mission of "connecting artists, scholars, and activists from across the Americas and creates new avenues for collaboration and action. Focusing on social justice, we research politically engaged performance and amplify it through gatherings, courses, publications, and archives." Many PS students connect with this mission and have the opportunity to work with Hemi on their programs, events, and conferences. They have their next conference this month in Mexico City. WHAT IS A PSE? - The Performance Studies Experience series is a chance for students to come together for informational meetings to learn about programs like Tisch Study Away, academic research opportunities, or sometimes just for a pizza party! PS is a tight knit community but it is still important to gather as a group! Stay tuned for our Fall 2019 series schedule to be set later this summer.

#TheoryThursday "Dance exists as a perpetual vanishing point. At the moment of its creation it is gone. All the years of training in the studio, all the choreographer’s planning, the rehearsals, the coordination of designers, composers, and technicians, the raising of money and the gathering together of an audience—all these are only a preparation for an event that disappears in the very act of materializing. No other art is so hard to catch, so impossible." - José Muñoz (p 81 Cruising Utopia)

DID YOU KNOW? - That all Performance Studies B.A. majors need to have a minor, and many students choose to have a second major because the program is so flexible. The minor in a “related field” allows students to expand their interdisciplinary knowledge base from which to consider performance as a situated, context-specific practice. The minor could be in the humanities, social sciences, languages, or other arts.
Read more here about the curriculum and structure of the B.A: https://tisch.nyu.edu/performance-studies/degree-programs/undergraduate-program

WHY PS @ NYU? "Based on my experience, I do not think that there is any program equivalent to NYU Performance Studies. When I was applying to NYU, I knew that I wanted to learn how performance works from inside out and how art institutions function behind the curtain. I was curious about how performance art began and where it is heading, and how it is currently changing the landscape of the contemporary art world. Performance Studies seemed like a perfect place to learn all of this." - Maria Koblyakova, (B.A. '19)
