My Dad has given me the trask of sorting him a camera for his holiday. He is off to Kenya and would like a camera that packs a bigger zoom than his current compact so he can zoom in on the wildlife without getting too close However he does not want to spend a fortune!
Here is a summary of what i have found out so far!
Fuji offer a number of camera's that are compact but still feature a large optical zoom, and with many of them there isnt much between them.
Firstly the Fuji T200 is a very easy to use camera that is 14 Megapixels and has a 10x Optical zoom. It dosnt have some of the features such as GPS etc but is aimed more at those wanting to simply take easy pictures but with a 10x zoom not miss the action. This camera is a great price at £86.98 and is highly recommended.
Fuji also offer their EXR range, starting with the Fuji F300 , The F500 , F550 , F600 , F660 and the new Fuji F770 EXR. It is the F500 EXR that sticks out the most. Apart from the new F770 the rest of the cameras are 16 megapixels with a 15x zoom (the new F770 has a 20x zoom) There really isnt much between them but the price of the F500 stuck out at a bargain £134.99. The camera is very easy to use, and even though it has the 15x Optical zoom it is not too big a camera meaning it is easy to pop in your pocket and take out for the day.
Panasonic have the FS35 which is a stylish little camera. This camera has an 8x zoom which may not quite be enough for the purpose, but at £94 is a great price for a camera with a leica lens!
Nikons version is the S8200 , but this camera is quite pricey at £182 seing as it's zoom is not as powerful as the Fuji's and is an extra £50 than the F500! Nikon do have the S9100, however this camera seems to be having some problems with lots of bad reviews, so stay clear of that model!
All in all there are many good compact camera's out there with larger zooms, so its never been a better time to get a camera that gets you right in the action. So if i were to recomend a camera more than anything is the Fuji F500 EXR

Crimbo camera ideas for TJB
As far as a 16 Megapixel camera that is waterproof there seems to be only one camera, and that is the Nikon AW100! Panasonic's version, the FT3 is a bit off from the Nikon and is only 12 megapixels with a 4.6x Zoom.
The Nikon packs a 5x Optical lens, is waterproof to approximately 10 meters, shock-proof with a fall of up to approximately 1.5 meters, and can withstand cold air temperatures as low as −10°C!
Once you have taken your pictures, you can then view them on a world map using the built in gPS. The GPS function also features a point of intrest feature that tell you of any famous landmarks, ideal for being on holiday!
Want to record a movie clip while away? The AW100 can record HD Movies at the click of the button, making it easier to film the unexpected.
RRP is £329.99 but amazon have it for £250 at the moment.
CLICK THE PIC TO VIEW MORE ABOUT THE NIKON AW100
If however you are ot going to use the camera under water that muc, i would strongly recomend the Panasonic TZ20. The TZ20 has a much better better zoom (16x optical zoom) but the more important thing is the picture quality. It has a leica lens that gives perfect image quality. The TZ20 is only £184.99 on amazon at the moment. But be super quick because its RRP is £369.99 and this price is stupidly good! A week or so ago it was £220, plus you can get £35 cashback on it at the moment making it only about £150! This realy is a steel!
The TZ20 is a 14.1 megapixel camera and features the GPS like the nikon AW100 and also has HD Movie.
To cover your waterproof needs, Panasonc do a 14.1 Megapixel camera with a 4x zoom. The Panasonic FT10 is a tough camera, similar to the Nikon AW100 but a lot cheaper as it does not feature the GPS function. The FT10 is waterproof to 3m, Freeze-proof -10℃, Shockproof 1.5m and Dust-proof.
The FT10 is only £146.99 at the moment, so this and the Panasonic TZ20 would be just under £300.
This is the best way to go about it though, this way you have a camera easy to use above land in the TZ20 plus a camera great under water. The image quality on the TZ20 is really good, and it has a great buerst nmode good for sport shot. The Nikon has the GPS, but this isnt really an important feature.
If you wanted a slightly cheaper alternative to the Panasonic FT10, Olympus do the TG310. This is the new version of my dads camera and is very similar to the Panasonic FT10. However the Panasonic has beter picture quality. Its available in a flairwhite colour that is cheaper than the other colours and is now reduced from £159.99 to £115!
Hope this helps!
Id personaly go straight for the Panasonic TZ20. Its a great price for a lovely camera.
I would then get the Panasonic FT10 to go with it, but there would be no harm in buying the Olympus TG310. By buying the olympus it leaves you some change to buy a memory card to go with it! 2 cameras is the way forward for what your after, but at these prices it dosnt have to break the bank!
Talking of memory cards....
Going deep sea diving?
