𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐦𝐲𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟.

Petra’s finger tips glittered under the whitewashed lighting, as she quickly swept away the brimming tears. Elena’s heart sank deeper, her own eyes starting to pool. Guilt sat so heavily in her chest it was difficult to breathe, her body wound in a tight unnatural seated position as she listened openly. As they spoke, she knew Sarah was only a minute away at most. Bjorn, Orion and Roman already on the block below in anticipation waiting for the final call. Just far enough that Petra might not sense them. She’d thought there wasn’t a chance Petra would entertain a conversation, especially not in the volatile state she’d been in for the past month. If Sarah couldn’t sit her down, what hope did she have?

Petra had never liked her much. Elena was too docile, too naive, too ignorant. From the moment they’d met, she’d been cast as weak and a liability. Not irrationally so either, even she could admit it. Ever since, she’d been trying to make herself useful to varying degree’s of success. Her brutality with Aurora, for one. Would she had volunteered to bleed the brain of a pregnant woman, partially vegetating her if there had been no one around to hear? If it didn’t prove her commitment to protect the Avengers as her own? Even now she could remember the way Petra nodded at her when it was said and done. The quiet respect that had blossomed between them, Elena no longer a child in her eyes. It was why she was here now, not because Petra liked her or they thought it might help break through the fog, but because if this went sideways, Elena might stand a chance. Maybe Wade could’ve been a better match, but he’d never agree–– to any of it. Wade would close his eyes while the world burned if it was Petra holding the matches. Orion, she could murder in a moment and no one knew how far gone she really was- Even Sarah doubted she could guarantee his safety. Petra might hate her for this but ultimately Elena was hoping to spare her from slaughtering the people she loved most.

“All of this was to protect myself,” Petra quivered. “To protect all of us! Nothing’s been right since Wade-” You could hear the rattle of grief in her chest with ever frantic inhale. Elena shifted in her seat, leaning forwards as she pulled her powers back ever so slightly–– Petra’s anxiety was making her want to throw up, the cortisol levels in her system were dizzying, even secondhand. Her pulse was deafening, pounding like a racehorse inside Elena’s skull. Even from here, she could see the blood jumping in the vein of her throat. “I didn’t want any of this,” She gulped a deep breath, face contorted as if everything was striking her at once. Maybe it was. How long had it been since she last had any control over where her thoughts raced? “I don’t want it. This wasn’t supposed to happen–”

Tears moved down Elena’s cheeks without permission, catching on the corners of her lips before she felt them roll down her throat, ignoring the uncomfortable wetness.

Sarah said to expect the worst, to do whatever it took to keep her here and happy as best she could. From all she’d been told, she expected monologues and bloody threats not trembling breaths and grief stricken confessions. Only her body was supposed to be here, inhabited by something twisted- she had never signed up to corner her weeping friend. Petra was terrified of everything in this moment, most of all herself. If Sarah burst in and collared her, while the people she trusts hold her down… Even if they managed, would she ever heal from it? Or would they be damaging a mind already more fragile than they could imagine. Did they really want to risk confusing friend and foe in the only moment of clarity anyone had seen her in since this had began? Unless they planned to keep that collar on the rest of her life, what would this fix?

“I believe you,” Elena murmured, leaning forwards to clasp a hand over Petra’s fervently. When their eyes met, she saw nothing but fear and desperation. She was pleading for help whether she knew it or not, but what did she have to offer? She tore at her lip, chewing down anxiously as she weighed her choices. “We all love you, you know that.” She assured, watching Petra’s eyes shut with a flinch, as if the admission stung.

“Sarah will never forgive me, she can’t-” Her voice so watery, for a moment Elena struggled to understand her. She shook her head without hesitation.

“She loves you. She wants to help you.” She’d never hurt you, she added silently. But would Petra understand that when her love threw her to the ground and wrestled the most prominent symbol of everything they hated around her neck? She doubted it.

Elena’s trembling hands yanked the mic from her jacket collar, crushing it beneath her boot as she pulled Petra to her feet, ignoring the confusion on her features as she moved with breathless urgency towards the window. “Petra you need to listen to me, you have to go– Now. Sarah’s asked me to keep you here–– I’m sorry. I know what you must think but you’re wrong. You have to go…” The woman’s green eyes were suddenly piercing and bewildered, her fingers glowing as they splayed out rigidly. The apprehension left her eyes completely, leaving only frost in her stare. “They have a collar- Morgan thinks it’ll help-” She regretted the words with the little time she had for context, shaking her head as she tried to reason with her eyes why this was not a betrayal. “To stop this, but Petra, you… You can stop this, I know you don’t want to hurt anyone. I know you’re scared; and you need help but not like this, you need to go.”

She could hear thundering footsteps as she wrenched the window, shoving it fruitlessly with all her might just to be blown aside as it shattered, leaving her staring up from the floor as Petra crushed the broken glass beneath her boot. Her arms were bloody, she realised when she lifted her palm to pause the woman, pleading. “It’s not what you think, we want to save you Petra, please come home-” She had drifted through the window pane into the night before Elena could even find the words she’d been striving for. Her skin pulled itself back into place, glass worming its way from her flesh, leaving only the bloody trails behind.

The door burst inwards, splintering off its hinges as Roman’s foot struck it to oblivion. His eyes were wild, scanning every corner like he expected Petra to be lurking behind the curtains. His knuckles white as he gripped the gun firmly in-hand. She could see what Georgie saw, if only for a split moment; that feral protection they’d craved since they were small. Put the look grew rancid on him, more like a dog with a bone than a saviour. “What the hell happened?!” He barked, Bjorn appearing behind him, eyes also roaming and checking the hall behind him as Orion’s voice could be heard in the stairwell, struggling to keep up with the other two but calling for her regardless.

Roman ran to the window, using his scope to scan the sky for Petra, Bjorn closed his eyes and leaned against the wall with a steady exhale. He knew, she realised, feeling the embarrassment of failure creeping up her spine. He knew her temperament, he’d warned Sarah she might not be the best choice. He was right. Her eyes welled again, dejected and grief stricken. She thought it would work, she thought if someone gave her a chance, just one more- maybe it would give her an ounce of hope. Finally Orion made it up the final flight, crashing into the apartment like a bull as he ran to her. “Are you okay?” His hands ran over her arms, before cupping her chin, scanning for marks under the blood stains. He kneeled in the glass thoughtlessly, lips pressing to her temple to reassure himself as much as her. She nodded meekly, too ashamed to speak.

“What happened?” His voice was so soft it made her bottom lip quiver. She’d ruined everything. She’d let down his sister and now god only knew what the hell might happen. “Did she- Are you sure you’re okay?” Elena nodded again, biting down so she wouldn’t cry. She should’ve just listened- maybe Petra would never trust them again but at least she’d be here. At least they had a chance. Now what? When she heard Sarah in the stairwell, she felt like she might shrink in on herself until there was nothing left.

Her tall frame filled the door way, looking to Bjorn before any of them who looked back with a slight grimace, as if they were having a conversation none of them were privy to. Sarah’s lip twitched in anger and suddenly, her eyes were on Elena’s boring down on her as Orion helped her to her feet. “What did you do?” Not ‘what happened’ not ‘how did she get away’. Sarah felt the betrayal in her bones and Elena knew it.

“I couldn’t do it,” She admitted.

“Great,” Roman rumbled sarcastically, chasing it with a sigh as he removed himself to the hallway.

“What do you mean, you couldn’t do it?” Bjorn moved closer, placing a hand on her shoulder in an attempt to diffuse the situation but Sarah shrugged him off roughly, stepping forward out of his space and into Elena’s.

“It was Petra, really her. She wanted this to stop. I thought…” Orion shifted slightly, not coming between them per se, but close enough that he could at any moment. Sarah didn’t even look at him, eyes still drilling holes through her. “Maybe she still will come back to-”

“No, you don’t get it. This was it. This was the shot. Whatever she goes and does tonight, that’s on you.” Elena had never seen Sarah so angry, snarling down as she shrunk in upon herself, gluing her eyes to the floor. “I should have never trusted you with this- how could you be that unbelievably stupid?”

“Hey-” Orion attempted to interject.

“Sarah, she was different you have to believe me–”

“Get her out of here,” Sarah’s voice was unyieldingly cold. Roman’s voice echoed through the comm; Petra had been spotted two miles south.

“She never would’ve forgiven you– any of us if you wrestled that on t-”

“I said, get her out!” The shout made Elena’s knee’s go weak, bambi-eyed as she froze on the spot. Orion tugged softly on her hand, ushering her towards the door. If it had been anyone but her, she wondered if he’d been joining Sarah, ready to berate some sense into her. He should, she thought miserably. He should hate me for this. She’d ruined everything- hoping like a child that a little empathy might be more powerful than they’d considered. But this wasn’t a fairytale, where a little love and understanding would cure Petra.

“Sarah, I’m sorry-” She attempted in a whimper. The woman’s face was carved from stone, utterly unmoved by the words. Sarah had been the one who had tried to soften Petra’s skepticism towards her, after they had freed her from the ICE box. She could see the regret for that burning under the fury in her eyes.

“Don’t. I don’t want to hear a word out of your mouth. Ever again.” She turned to Orion but did not meet his eye. “Get her out.”
