this big debacle saddens me and highlights why I just can’t be bothered to do more than skim every new episode these days, if that.

this isn’t meant to be a 2k12 vs. 2k3 post (hence my not using the 2012 tag), but I remember 2k3 being surprisingly progressive, moreso than a lot of shows these days despite the timestamp. Off the top of my head:

Plentiful PoC characters with well-developed backstories (even if their accents were generally freaking terrible)

Well-written women in many gender-defying roles. For example, the woman Tribunal member being the master of strength (while the giant burly guy was actually stealth); and Quarry, the leader of a band of hideous monsters who have lost their minds. And… that monster hunting lady, I’m sorry, idr her name.

At the same time, there were women who displayed more traditional femininity and weren’t shamed for it. Also, “femininity” never meant hypersexualizing them. Ever.

Race or gender rarely (if ever) came into question when determining competence. I cannot recall a single instance of the guys treating women with any less respect or underestimating them only by principle of them being a woman… sans a bit of casual sexism from Casey once or twice.

I can think of at least one instance of interracial marriage; an old married couple, a black woman and a white man, who were lovey and cute and, again, treated no differently than anyone else.

I’m not saying 2k3 was flawless in its portrayal of social issues, because it wasn’t. But having re-watched it as an adult, it really struck me how refreshing it all was.

Upon discovering that he is not, a look of helpless concern for the the random human that he’s never met crosses his face
