People kept commenting on this post how the brown eyes were the one visual trait they share with Splinter and I couldn't stop thinking about that for two years.

Death | Splinter Week 2025
read on AO3
He had to find his sons.
As Splinter tore through the woods, the branches tried to tear through him. Wicked, unnaturally sharp thorns grabbed at his clothes and fur and ripped them indiscriminately from his body. He didn’t care about the pain, only that it continuously slowed him down. He had to find his boys before something happened to them, before it was too late and his terrible visions came true.
For minutes still he tore through the underbrush toward the sound of battle. He paused for just an instant, tuning his ears this way and that to hear the battle. It was getting quieter, not louder as he approached, which was not a good sign. He dropped on all fours to work through the worst of the thicket, loosed the tie of his hat from his neck to leave it behind. His heart beat in his throat.
There was a heavy dread in his chest that grew by the very second, taking his hope and drowning it in sorrow before he even laid eyes on them, on his precious turtles.
He finally burst forth into the clearing and stopped short, nearly falling back against the thicket he’d just escaped. There, in the center of the clearing, a green body. Unmoving. Scattered across the clearing were four turtles, covered in the blood and grime of war, struck down too soon. Always too soon.
Splinter tried to run toward them, but his sandals sunk into the mud beneath him and held them in place. He fell to his knees and clawed at the sandals, then the mud as his feet sank quickly into it. He couldn’t get free, couldn’t get away, and his children—his sons!
“Splinter!” cried Michelangelo.
“Master! Save us!” Leonardo shouted.
They laid motionless still in the grass, red pooling beneath them.
Splinter looked down again at his legs, sank to his knees into the mud, and found it the same hot, sticky, red, the lifeblood of his sons, consuming him.
A ragged cry tore from his throat—pure, senseless anguish.
And he woke in his bed.
Splinter lay on his back, at home. A guttering candle cast low, flickering shadows around the room, but there was no blood. No thicket, no monsters lurking. Still, tears soaked his fur.
He pulled himself upright with a groan, his old bones upset at his rest cut so short. That was not rest—that was his worst nightmare, the one he had lived, reimagined for his private, perpetual torment.
He understood, now, why he had to be there. Why they had to be in such mortal peril and, ultimately, die for this cause. The spirit of Yoshi that they all carried within them, these fragments of his master, had to converge on the one place in order to conquer the evil of the demon Shredder. It was worth it in the end to have saved the world, but only because his sons were returned to him. Only because life was returned to them, their bodies repaired, was any of it worthwhile. Otherwise, he’d have let the world go to ruin. The tribunal, who surely saw this in his heart, had concealed it from him to the very end.
Because he knew all along in his heart of hearts that he would choose his sons over the rest of the world. Without question.
Did that make him a monster? He wondered, especially when he thought about the alternate version of him that young Michelangelo had encountered and ultimately defeated. That version of him, while doubtlessly insane, had something in common with himself: they both chose their sons above all. He, this Splinter, wouldn’t have personally signed the fate of billions like the other, but an inaction is just as decisive as an action. Choosing to take his sons away from the Tribunal like he had so wanted to, like he would still if they hadn’t lived through the experience, was just as evil. Knowing all this...he still would have done it.
He wiped the warm tears from his fur and sighed. These nightmares always made it so difficult to go back to sleep, partly from the heart-racing anxiety it gave him, partly for fear he would fall asleep and wake up right back in the thick of it.
Splinter rose and took the dying candle with him. In the dark, he padded to the nearest of his sons’ rooms and peeked inside. Ever a ninja, he didn’t make a sound as he crossed Michelangelo’s room to touch the hand that hung over the edge of his platform bed. It was ice cold, so he carefully tucked it near his body on the mattress and pulled the blanket over his shell. For a long moment, he watched him breathe and listened to his snores. His sweet, exuberant child. Alive, healing, safe.
He went to Donatello’s room next, adjacent to his ever-growing lab. The computer screen lit his room a cool, ever-shifting blue via the aquarium screensaver. Donatello himself was on the couch nearby, tucked in under a mound of blankets. His mouth hung slightly open. Splinter turned off the computer monitor and pressed a kiss to Donatello’s brow before he gently removed his mask, leaving it draped over the back of the couch.
Raphael and Leonardo’s room shared a wall. Raphael was sound asleep, hammock swaying slightly as he snored. Klunk had assumed his loaf-like pose on Raphael’s chest, rising and falling with his breath. He opened his eyes and questioned Splinter’s entry with a soft mrrp?
Splinter gave him a scratch between the ears and shushed him gently, pointing at Raphael. “Don’t wake him,” he whispered to the cat.
As though he understood, Klunk settled back down and closed his eyes.
Leonardo’s was the last door he pushed open. This room smelled much like his own, familiar incense provided in bundles by April. The smell was shot through with the sharp tang of metal and polish. His collection of blades was well kept, displayed proudly on the wall opposite the door. Leonardo slept beneath it on a futon mattress, thick comforter pulled up to his chin.
He startled awake, then let out a tense breath when he recognized his father. “Sensei,” he said, half-sitting, “is everything okay?”
“All is well, Leonardo. I was just checking on you all.”
His expression softened from worry to understanding. Splinter was not the only one who still experienced nightmares, all these months later. Indeed, most of the population of New York City probably did.
“Are you going back to sleep?”
He came all the way into the room and knelt beside his son. He smoothed a paw over his head, following it with a kiss. “Yes. Go back to sleep, I will see you in the morning.”
Leonardo laid back down and yawned thickly. “Okay. ‘Night, Papa.”
Splinter’s heart swelled. The children had stopped calling him Papa when they began calling him Sensei and Master. Leonardo had brought back the moniker when he returned from Japan and the others readily picked it up. Splinter didn’t know he missed the title until it came back. He felt such love and elation every time he heard it.
“Goodnight, little one,” he whispered.
Splinter went back to his room, heart much lighter than before, and settled in before Master Yoshi’s shrine. He would mediate for a while, then sleep.
All was well.

Sorry for not posting here to Tumblr each day, but I wasn't 100% sure I was going to be able to keep up with each of the days. (Also, sorry for the weird formatting - I can't share Ao3 links normally on Tumblr via mobile, for some reason)
It's not quite as Splinter-centric as I think the week was meant to be, but I had fun with the prompts nonetheless 😅
Thanks to @/halogalopaghost for hosting this fun week, and well done to everyone who took part in the prompts 💚

DAY 5 OF SPLINTER WEEK!!! I’m admittedly alittle late on this one cause of having to focus on work. If there are any fellow archeologists out there going through backfill rn you have my sympathy lol
Anyways! For today I decided to go with the prompt Nourish with 87 Splinter and his boys! I haven’t seen too much of the show myself, but I really love how kind and paternal splinter is in what I have seen. I think it’s really cute that he always gets pizza for his kids despite not seeming to really like it much himself lol.

And SUPRISE it’s a two-fer today!! For day 6 I did seasons with Splinter from the 90s movies! I was going to do the spirit prompt and do a super moody piece about him in the first movie astral projecting to see his kids, but I couldn’t get the image of him in a stupid hat visiting the beach out of my head so…..
This one is admittedly very experimental. I LOVE line art and am a big fan of penning pieces. So trying something lineless and water colour-y was kind of out of my element lol. I’m pretty proud of the result though!
As always, check out @tmnt-splinterweek for prompts and other entrees!!!

Mismatched set Splinter in an outfit based on this 1987 one and in a pose based on this stock photo.
This kind of fits the warmth prompt for @tmnt-splinterweek
Guess I'm doing day one on day 6
