Today, in 1910, Virginia Woolf (then Virginia Stephen) and Horace de Vere Cole, carried out the 'Dreadnaught Hoax'.
With a group of friends they dressed up and persuaded the Royal Navy that they were Abyssinian royalty, and were given a tour of HMS Dreadnaught in Portland Harbour.

Today, in 1910, HMS Weymouth was launched. Named after the Dorset seaside town, she served during the First World and was finally sold off in 1928.

Today, in 1905, Robert White died. He established Whitehead's torpedo works at Ferrybridge, Wyke Regis, Dorset.
The Whitehead's torpedo works pier once stretched from this point into Portland Harbour.
