what she says: Merry Christmas!
what she means: the Biblical account the nativity is riddled with errors about the history of the Roman Empire and this holiday is built upon the cultural spoliation of Saturnalia and Yule but I'm not going to bring that up and inject bitterness into a gentle, carefree holiday centered around family and gift-giving because I love you.

Lol.
“Ukip donor Arron Banks has taken the bold step of challenging Cambridge University classicist Mary Beard on her knowledge of Roman history, citing his schoolboy studies and Russell Crowe Hollywood epic Gladiator! as his sources. Beard - a professor of classics and a fellow of Newnham College since 1984 who has produced multiple series on Rome for the BBC - is one of Britain’s best-known scholars. The university don clearly felt she had to intervene on Twitter when Banks - the multi-millionaire diamond mine-owning insurance tycoon who has bankrolled Ukip and played a key role in Brexit - started to link the fall of the Roman Empire with troubles affecting the European Union.”

Hi, I'm a student of Philosophy from German and I'm currently working on an essai concerning gender in Plato's Symposion. Do you have any recommendations on this topic?
i don’t wanna give too much away, but you might want to look at the part where aristophanes talks about why people seek out their other half (in the literal sense). there’s some good stuff in there about greek patriarchy and love of manliness

ancient politicians who would still make better presidents than donald trump
clodius pulcher: mostly loved to cause a ruckus. notorious cross-dresser and prince-stealer
cicero: spent most of his political career insulting people he didn’t like (see mark antony). was so proud of saving the republic that he wrote two epic poems about how great he is
julius caesar: gained power by beating the shit out of his opponents but at least tried to help the poor. once received a sext from his girlfriend in the middle of a senate meeting which was then angrily read by said girlfriend’s half-brother who thought it was evidence that he was participating in a conspiracy
cato the elder: main political achievement that he is remembered for was screaming that carthage must be destroyed at the end of every speech
didius julianus: purchased the roman empire at an auction and was later executed for being useless
mark antony: frat boy politician well-known for wearing the ancient equivalent of booty shorts and coming to political meetings hungover
pupienus: ruled for three months before being assassinated by the praetorian guard. name is pronounced “poopy anus”
