1996-1997: TOSHIYA
* PLEASE DO NOT REPOST *
Recently, I purchased these reprinted photos online and wanted to share. The seller stated they were from 1996 or 1997, which could have been either D+L or GOSICK. I don’t recognize the vocalist, though I’ve only see a single photo of Junya (GOSICK) labeled and I’ve never seen SHUJI* (D+L, see edit), so I’m not familiar with who it is. In doing some research to see if I could find photos of his various vocalists, I found some information I’d like to share.
Interestingly, the internet conflicts on whether or not GOSICK came before or after D+L, though wiki states after being a Pierrot roadie that he joined GOSICK in Tokyo before returning to Nagao for D+L. Additionally, wiki says he was the guitarist with D+L, which I’ve never seen before and other Japanese sites list him as both the bassist or guitarist depending on the site. In the 2016 Player’s Book, Toshiya does talk about his time playing the guitar but from what he stated, I believe he played bass leading up to the unnamed January 1997 live in Nagano when recruited by the band. Unfortunately I don’t have any older magazines that might provide a more “official” source on Toshiya’s timeline. I always thought that GOSICK came before D+L, but I’m known to get things mixed up myself. :)
As an aside, one rumor I read stated that Aiji and Toshiya dated the same woman (I was uncertain if Aiji or Toshiya “stole” the girlfriend or simply she left one to be the other, or if time had passed but still upset one of the two men.) which led to the bad blood between Toriko and Piera, but honestly, this is only a rumor and the more likely scenario is that two major bands existed in a time where “supporting” your favorite band meant the “other” was unacceptable. This not unlike spats over which pop singer is better, like Hamasaki and Koda, et al. I just wanted to share it with you all as it amused me.
edit: the vocalist of D+L was originally mistyped as Shunji; I have corrected this above.
