Yak (Bos grunniens), es nativo del altiplano tibetano. Recubierto de varias capas de fino y denso pelo soportan temperaturas de hasta -40º C bajo cero sin inconveniente. Mientras los machos alcanzan los 1.000 kgrs. de peso y 2 metros de alzada en su joroba, las hembras llamadas Nak, son mucho más pequeñas y alcanzan apenas 1/3 de las dimensiones de los machos. Tras ser domesticado en el primer milenio antes de cristo, convive en íntima armonía con los Tibetanos y los Sherpa, quienes aun hoy los utilizan para el transporte de carga y otros usos. La leche, naturalmente se ordeña de las hembras o “Nak”, habitualmente Mal llamada “Yak Milk”. Yak (Bos grunniens) are native of the tibetan plateau. Babu Chiri and Dawa Chiri Sherpa -from Taksindu village, Nepal- climb towards the summit of Mount Everest. Babu was among the greatest and strongest climbers of all time, but above all fun and humble. He had been to the summit of Mt. Everest ten times, all without the use of supplemental oxygen, the first to climb Everest twice in one season, did the first fast ascent to the summit (in 16.56 hours), and stayed at the top for a record 21 hours without oxygen -a feat no one believed possible- still today unbroken. Unfortunately Babu lost his life in 2001, when falling into a crevasse near Everest’s Camp II. According to Babu, his greatest achievement was building a school in his home village. And his legacy still lives on. Babu Chiri y Dawa Chiri Sherpa -de la villa de Taksindu, Nepal- ascienden hacia la cima del Monte Everest. Babu fue uno de los mas grandes y fuertes montanistas de todos los tiempos, pero por sobre todo, divertido y humilde. Habia alcanzado la cumbre del monte Everest diez veces, todas sin el uso de oxigeno suplementario, la primer persona en escalar el Everest dos veces en una temporada, hizo el primer ascenso rápido a la cima (en 16 horas y 56 minutos) y permanecio en la cima por un récord de 21 horas sin oxígeno, una hazaña que nadie creía posible, y aun hoy sin superar. Desafortunadamente, Babu perdió la vida en 2001, al caer en una grieta cerca del Campo II del Everest. Según Babu, su mayor logro fue construir una escuela en su pueblo natal. Brad Bull and Arita Sherpa steadily climb towards the South Summit of Mount Everest, as the sun rises. An incredible contrast when compared to these days ascents, where hundreds of people wait while climbing ahold of fixed ropes. We were the only five people above 8000 meters on that day, May 15th 1995. That year, only three expeditions were granted climbing permits, and about 80 people were at Nepal’s Everest Base Camp through the entire spring season. This year 400 climbing permits were granted to foreigners and about 1500 people were at Everest Base Camp. Conditions changed very soon after that, and very quickly. Under today’s standards, it is a privilege to climb Mount Everest as we did during those days. Far above the clouds and very early in the morning. Taking one step after another, climbing together, all following the same steady pace while breaking trail, exhilarated and exhausted at the same time. We were almost alone, just five of us following the South Eastern Ridge of Mount Everest. Apa Sherpa, Arita Sherpa, Brad Bull, Nima Rita Sherpa and Me. It was May 15th 1995 and we started to reach the summit at 7.30AM. We enjoyed every second of it, breathless…. every minute in peaceful solitude, admiring the grandeur and beauty that surrounded us. And we shared that beautiful moment, with tears and laughter, with silence and screams of joy, with the rest of our team at Base Camp. Muy por encima de las nubes y muy temprano en la mañana. Dabamos un paso tras otro, ascendiendo juntos, todos siguiendo constantes el mismo ritmo mientras abriamos huella, emocionados y exhaustos al mismo tiempo. On April 22nd 2016, after 12 days of skiing and carrying our sleds on the Arctic Ice, we reached the North Pole. A great team composed by Generals Victor Figueroa and Mauricio Fernandez Funes, of Juan Pablo de La Rua, Ignacio Carro, Gustavo and Emiliano Curti, Luis Cataldo, Jose Naranjo, Santiago Tito and Me. We all left with one simple goal, All of us reaching the Pole … Together. And so we moved day after day, overcoming the cold and the difficulties that arose, Together and Having a Great time. While circling the Swayambhu stupa, torn during the 2015 Kathmandu earthquake, and having my wife’s ashes blessed, @liam_heinrich heard Nawang Sherpa’s prayers behind us. As I turned around I noticed Rangi Lama Sherpa and Chhoti Lama Sherpa holding a dove in their hands and praying while they flew into the skies. Releasing life or “Tsethar” in Tibetan Buddhism, is a traditional practice where blessed Animals are returned to their natural environment, while prayers are dedicated to someone who is ill or has died, with the belief that the person will also benefit from this dedication. Simply a coincidence, perhaps Karma, I was only able to take this one photograph, that became very special when hearing their story, similar to ours. Mientras rodeábamos el templo de Swayambhu, destrozado por el terremoto de Katmandú en 2015, y hacíamos bendecir las cenizas de mi esposa Victoria, @liam_heinrich escuchó el cántico de Nawang Sherpa detrás nuestro. Cuando me di vuelta, noté que Rangi Lama Sherpa y Chhoti Lama Sherpa sostenían una paloma en sus manos y rezaban al abrirlas para que volaran hacia el cielo. "Liberar la vida" o “Tsethar” en el budismo tibetano, es una práctica tradicional en la cual animales bendecidos son devueltos a su entorno natural, mientras que las oraciones se dedican a alguien que está enfermo o ha fallecido, con la creencia de que la persona también se beneficiará con esta dedicación. Krzysztof Wielicki climbs the steep slopes of Nanga Parbat during the winter season of 2006/2007, then 57 years old. On February 17th 1980, Krzysztof stood on the summit of Mount Everest, the first summit of an 8000 meter mountain during the winter time, after which the Poles were nicknamed the “Ice Warriors”. In 1986, Krzysztof achieved another first winter ascent of an 8,000er, when he and Jerzy Kukuczka climbed Kangchenjunga. And then, in 1988, still recovering from a spinal injury from an accident several months before, he made the first winter ascent of Lhotse — solo. In 1996 Krzysztof became the fifth person to reach the summit of all 8000 meter mountains, which he crowned with a bold ascent of Nanga Parbat, solo, via the Kinshofer Route. Still active today, Krzysztof led the 2018/19 K2 winter expedition. A living legend, a great master, a great friend. Artur Hajzer, resolutely ascends the ridge above Nanga Parbat’s Camp I, in harmony with the mountain, as if he were part of it. Artur and Jerzy Kukuczka, were the first to reach the summit of Annapurna during the winter season, on February 3rd 1987. Twenty years later, Artur was still among the strongest Himalayan climbers, a legendary “Ice Warrior”, determined and committed, always climbing gracefully. We started as the sun was rising that winter morning, relieved as the sub-zero temperatures slightly increased. A historic moment. K2 (to the right) -the second highest mountain in the world- looms above all others in Nanga Parbat’s frozen sunset. Today January 16th 2021, it was successfully climbed during the winter season by ten strong Sherpa who as part of different teams, joined forces to achieve such extreme feat. It was the last of the worlds’ 8000 meter mountains that remained unclimbed during the coldest season. It took 41 years since the “Ice Warriors” Krzysztof Wielicki and Leszek Cichy from Poland, first stood on the summit of Mount Everest during the winter time. Un momento histórico.
