hi! word of advice from a hollow knight speedrunner:

i promise no one will ever judge you as hard for this as you're judging yourself. games are for fun! play hollow knight the way that makes you the happiest! and if you need a break, the game will always be there if you want to pick it back up again later.

(also 112% is team cherry's suggested "things that they want you to do" but as OP said there's tons of other stuff you can try if you feel you're hitting a roadblock. i'm always biased towards suggesting speedrunning or randomizer, but the sky's the limit with all the mods and challenges you can try tbh. i personally know several people who play the game at a very high level who either never bothered to get 112% because pantheons didn't sound interesting, or who started out struggling a LOT with them, or both! the game's hard. i am giving you a warm blanket and hot chocolate)

I'm stuck at 107% completion bc I can't beat any of the pantheons, I can't beat trial of the fool, and it took me three months to beat regular radiance

i might not be the best person to ask abt this topic, but i'll try my best to give a word of advice

you know what makes hollow knight special? it's the characters and the stories and how the world unfolds around you.

the games focus isn't about a boss rush or a colosseum. don't worry about it too much! you are not a failure, i assure you.

please don't compare yourself to other people. enjoy hollow knight in your own way! take your time and make sure to take breaks.

if you feel the pantheons (or whatever challenge you're stuck on) is getting too grating, take a break to try something different (try a steel soul run! or a challenge/rando)

use firefox instead of chrome or opera (both are made with chromium, which blocks functionality for ad-blockers. firefox isn't based on chromium).

use mega or proton drive instead of google drive.

get rid of bloatware

use libreoffice instead of microsoft office suite

use vetted sites on r/FREEMEDIAHECKYEAH for free movies, books, games, etc.

use trakt or letterboxd instead of imdb.

use storygraph instead of goodreads.

use darkpatterns to find mobile game with no ads or microtransactions

use ground news to read unbiased news and find blind spots in news stories.

use mediahuman or cobalt to download music, or support your favorite artists directly through bandcamp

make youtube bearable by using mtube, newpipe, or the unhook extension on chrome, firefox, or microsoft edge

use search for a cause or ecosia to support the environment instead of google

use thriftbooks to buy new or used books (they also have manga, textbooks, home goods, CDs, DVDs, and blurays)

use flashpoint to play archived online flash games

find books, movies, games, etc. on the internet archive! for starters, here's a bunch of David Attenborough documentaries and all of the Animorphs books

burn your music onto cds

use pdf24 (available online or as a desktop app) instead of adobe

use unroll.me to clean your email inboxes

use thunderbird, mailfence, countermail, edison mail, tuta, or proton mail instead of gmail

remove bloatware on windows PC, macOS, and iOS X

remove bloatware on samsung X

use pixelfed instead of instagram or meta

use NCH suite for free software like a file converter, image editor, video editors, pdf editor, etc.

oh hi! i'm a hollow knight speedrunner! i love speedrunning too! what a great excuse to infodump about (specifically hk) low% :3

mentioned in this post is low% true ending, i.e. beat radiance with 23% completion. it's tedious, two people have run it but every twitch chatter wants everyone to run it for some reason. but essentially, to get 1800 essence for awoken dnail you need to farm enemies for random essence drops because most bosses count towards completion% and bees are the easiest (they literally stop having hitboxes after a while of the game spawning them in)...etc etc.

true low% is 11%! it skips out on dash and just goes straight for claw, and uses tram to get to city (since it's the only way there that doesn't require getting a %). there are a few skips that are pretty much exclusive to low% which is pretty cool! less "funny" in a sense though.

low% TE dropless is low% TE's cooler younger sibling. low% TE wishes it could be her. tl;dr random essence drops don't count towards the 1800, so you're allowed to kill a few additional bosses. but you're still not allowed to get wings! which means you have to do a pretty cool succession of skips to get through palace, including several slopeballs. route notes if you're curious and here's someone else's run

low% godhome ending...technically does ibaldur now instead of itemless blue lake shadeskip and itemless waterways to fungal, but the latter is much more fun. bask in the beauty of its early game, where we get claw by inventing new ways to take the longest amount of time to get there. either way it does pantheons with no charms or nail upgrades and only dive for damage, and about 2-3hr of the run is spent in godhome because of it. so if you want to take 4x the time to beat p5 this is the category for you...

speaking of godhome, empty hall isn't technically a low% category, but it might as well be. goal is to visit the hall of gods with the minimum number of bosses unlocked. in this case, vengefly king (unlocked automatically), and soul warrior and soul master (required to get dive, which is required to get to godhome). so you can't get dash, because you can't kill hornet, and you can't get fireball, because you can't fight false knight. so you do itemless baldur to get to greenpath, and then do a (reasonably cursed) skip to get to wraiths, so that you can enter fungal through wraiths stalls from queen's station, and only then can you actually get claw and go to city. why is this a category? because we love asking "can we do x without x" and then deciding it would be really funny if we just went and did that. and also we're all neurodivergent.

(low% nmms exists but only one person has run it and i'm not familiar with it enough to talk about it, so let's skip that one.)

ok ok ok saving the best and stupidest for last! low% ag (all glitches) gets 1%. "how the fuck" because there's a patch where you can use dream nail without having dream nail. yes you read that right. it's also the only patch that's legal for glitched runs but banned for NMG ones, because it's just that broken. so instead of doing anything normally you room dupe and kill monomon 3 times, which you can do by just nail slashing her tank.

(the actual explanation for "how the fuck" is that team cherry fucked up their collision layers on patch 1.2.1.1, so that the Knight's abilities interact with the game in all the wrong ways. so for example, you can't open chests at all on that patch, because your nail is swinging towards it on the wrong layer to actually interact with it. they hotfixed it like immediately so patch 1.2.2.1 still has some quirks but is actually playable, but the speedrunning community never forgets, and we WILL use all the tools you ever give us to break your game even more, thank you very much)

so yeah tl;dr speedrunning HK is fun :D

Low% is objectively the funniest speedrunning category. Nothing beats link staring at a rupee for 12 hours, or the hollow knight bug standing in a corner killing bees for like 30. What a beautiful example of the human desire to do stupid shit just to see if it's possible. I love speedrunning
