Over the millennia, animals have gone extinct on Earth for many different reasons. Sometimes it's because of a dramatic shift in the climate. Other times it was because of human intervention.
Advances in science, specifically biotechnology, could enable scientists to bring some of these animals "back" from extinction, and there are a few already on the list.
Generally, it helps if there is a species still alive today that is genetically similar to the extinct animal, like elephants for woolly mammoths or cows for aurochs.
Which leads me to question, is this where the partnership of technology and biology may lead us one day?
Did Michael Crichton novels foretell this?
Many scientists from across the globe have been trying to perfect the morally ambiguous act of cloning and genetic engineering for certain extinct animals. Ironically, many of Earth’s long-lost species, including some on this list, were driven to extinction by humans.

Most people who live in the United States know that they probably don’t have the most dangerous animals around
That’s exactly what happened to Thurgoona resident Eric Holland, who was surprised to discover a huge goanna running around his backyard on Thursday.
“I was just doing a repair job in my shed when I opened the door and I saw this huge thing run across the ground and out of sight,” Mr Holland told the Border Mail.
Unlike Africa, Asia, South America, and Australia, there just aren’t that many large beasts that pose a danger to humans.
The following critters may be lurking in your backyard even as you read this, so beware the deadly bite, sting, or mauling from these deadly beasts.
