Choromatsu & Friends Analysis
==================
This is an analysis about S3 E23 of Osomatsu-san. Specifically about how Choromatsu was portrayed through it and how I feel it fits with my projection of him having either a mental illness or disorder that deals with paranoia. This analysis will include my own personal experiences (without any detail) with having an undiagnosed illness with paranoia and how it affects certain aspects of life.
First, the episode is clearly intended to be Tacchan being Choromatsu’s imaginary friend, developing due to Choromatsu wanting to share the same interests in things he liked. But I feel like it goes deeper and somewhat relates to my hc of Choromatsu with Tacchan being a hallucination instead. When Choromatsu passes by Akasaka High School, seeing that it was or had a graduation ceremony, he walks towards the cherry tree nearby. Tacchan then happens to be there, Choromatsu saying he didn’t expect Tacchan to actually come. Tacchan appeared due to Choromatsu going back to the place where Tacchan was formed, most likely out of comfort and paranoia.
Hallucinations frequently form when a person is going through extreme stress or having difficulty in mental health. Knowing how highschool was the worst year for the Matsunos, it’s not shocking that Tacchan formed. When talking Tacchan acknowledges that Choromatsu isn’t the same person that he used to be in high school, being completely different. Choromatsu now being in a better headspace, it’s not surprising that he’s changed but it is to Tacchan because he’s only been around Choromatsu since high school. Tacchan only comes back due to Choromatsu and him talking about what happened on “that” day, something that’s stated frequently and that they can never forget.
What’s interesting though is that, even with both of them being older they both still share a mentor and mentee relationship, the one they had in high school. This shows that some things still haven’t changed between the two and their dynamic. After talking about Choromatsu not being the same, Tacchan starts talking about Choromatsu’s siblings but, mainly in a negative light on how they used to be. This is Tacchan most likely reflecting on how Choromatsu felt in high school, mainly having negative feelings towards them due to how they all stopped getting along in their last year. Tacchan later in the episode is shown to be extremely grateful towards Choromatsu even looking up to him with how he’s the only one that calls him “professor”.
Choromatsu takes extreme pride, feeling like a savior to Tacchan. This in a way can be a certain delusion of grandeur towards Choromatsu, due to how Tacchan talks about not dropping out of school because of Choromatsu and is even constantly impressed with him. Although both consider each other friends it’s clear that it’s mostly on Choromatsu’s part. Choromatsu cares about his relationship with Tacchan while Tacchan mainly is just friends with Choromatsu for the benefits. This shows how Tacchan is still a harmful hallucination rather than one that doesn’t harm.
This can also represent how a relationship can feel with those who are paranoid, that instead of thinking their friend is a nice person, they can have the fear that they’re being used instead. The way Choromatsu puts in majority effort in the relationship but Tacchan doesn’t can be a way on how Choromatsu rather feels most comfortable with him putting everything in. Knowing that once Tacchan “leaves” once he’s done using him, it won’t hurt as bad. But this possibly, is one of the main reasons why a tragedy happened, due to them being too close. Choromatsu, most likely having a paranoid breakdown on Tacchan.
Choromatsu starts calling Tacchan a betrayer and that he doesn’t care about the dirty magazines anymore. But, I think that Choromatsu really doesn’t mean what he’s saying about the dirty magazines but rather that he really is talking about himself. When replacing the dirty magazines with possessive pronouns, Choromatsu anger starts to make more sense. He just happens to associate himself with dirty magazines due to how much of a shitty person he feels like he is. With this paranoia, he believes that Tacchan is replacing him, leaving him which makes him freak out due to Tacchan being his one and only true friend.
Tacchan doesn’t respond to any of Choromatsu’s words, only acting once Choromatsu implies that he doesn’t need his girlfriend, being possessive of this hallucination. Having to feel like only killing this “girlfriend” was the only way their friendship would stay the same shows how difficult relationships can be for him. Choromatsu, when looking back on this I find it interesting that he ends up stating that “something was wrong with us”. The usage of us shows that Choromatsu doesn’t take the full blame of what happened in that event, not even realizing that Tacchan the whole time is shown to be shocked and uncomfortable in that flashback. Towards the end of the episode Tacchan reminds Choromatsu that they could never go back to being kids after Choromatsu stated he wishes he could go back.
Disappearing, Tacchan was there to help make Choromatsu realize that idea wasn’t possible. After Tacchan disappears, Choromatsu remembers that Tacchan isn’t real, leaving him saddened. One thing that gets constantly repeated throughout the episode is “Those are precious memories now”. Choromatsu not only considers the false memories he’s made with Tacchan and his brothers to be precious. He also considers the tragedy to be a precious memory, most likely due to being chosen over Tacchans girlfriend.
Feeling happy about their friendship staying together, he can realize what he did was wrong but has no empathy towards the situation still, feeling disconnected from the situation. Tacchan and Choromatsu have many similarities between each other. Both having negative feelings towards the other brothers, both flunking on tests, the feeling of no one liking them and having a similar interest in dirty magazines. These are reasons why Choromatsus is so close to this hallucination, not wanting it to go away. In conclusion, he’s like me fr.

karamatsu is officially... k-k-k-k-kind?!
guys i still think its pretty significant that karamatsu is now officially described as "kind" in his character description.
like, it's been this kind of odd point of contention whether karamatsu is actually considered "kind" in canon. especially since the director said in 2016 that he's kind because he likes the idea of himself being kind, rather than actually being a kind hearted person.
i feel like this characterization is interesting because 1) it was written almost a decade ago so there have likely been many many changes since then and 2) you almost can't really prove this wrong one way or another? like lets say it's true and every time he has been kind, its because he likes the idea of being a kind guy, well that would kind of dampen his stronger character moments, like when he punched osomatsu or confessed to losing the letter in the movie.
but you also have evidence to support it, seeing as there'll be some moments where he looks like he's going to do the right thing, but ends up not doing it because it's not convenient for him. so i do think even now it kind of rings true, but i can't bring myself to fully believe that that's his motive every time he does something kind.
that being said, the head writer has gone on record calling him "kind" and "a good guy" a couple times in interviews and talks (according to jp twitter lol, but please please please take with a grain of salt), so I think there might be a slight difference in the way they interpret his character. but now that the director is gone and the head writer is still there, its interesting that we finally get the k word in his character description.
now, google translate is crappy and subject to mistakes, but i think that the "doesn't listen to what others say" part might be alluding to the idea of him being kind for himself rather than for others. i mean, we have entire skits revolving around the fact that he won't listen to what other people say in favor of doing his own thing
but i still think it's crazy that we actually got the word kind in his description. this is up there with jyushimatsu's description saying that he can be calm at times
like these are character traits that are objectively true, of course jyushi can be calm at times and kara is kinder compared to his brothers. but these were more so characteristics that shined through during moments within the show, not canonized descriptions.
jyushi is defined by his high energy, so the occasional calmness is a subversion of expectations. when you add it into his character description, the calm moments that he has will no longer subvert expectations, but instead reinforce the information we've been given about the character. it lends to the depth of his character and makes him feel more well rounded rather than a gag character that can sometimes be serious.
similarly, karamatsu being a narcissist is his main thing. so those moments of kindness that he had felt like a nice little flourish that made him more likable. now, those moments of kindness are a solidified part of his character, so we expect kindness from him rather than being pleasantly surprised when we get it.
i mean, just look at karamatsu's character description from the takoyaki party movie
"Second son of the Matsuno family. NEET, virgin. A rare narcissist. He doesn't listen to others. "Hmph, I love you."(ai shiteru ze)"
like do you see what i mean now? the older descriptions are more barebones and gag-oriented. they're describing what you need to know to get the punchline. these new character descriptions give you a better look at the whole picture.
anyways, this does make me very excited to watch the new season and see where they take these characters. also, everyone had very interesting thoughts about the new season in my last post, and i really enjoyed reading them!

Osomatsu-san's season 4 trailer is officially out! Looks like we'll be having a slight different plot this time around: we're going to be following the sextuplets (and at least Iyami, by the looks of it), through their summer vacation! I will try and translate it to the best of my abilities, so keep an eye out for that!
Here's the translated version of the Tweet that accompanied the video:

Mother Matsuyo’s Stupid Parental Observations of Choromatsu:
“He has a serious side to him, so he’s good at making sure things get done. Maybe a job that seeks both accuracy and good judgment would suit him. He’s easily influenced by his surroundings, so if he’s at a work place with a lot of determined people, he’d also be lured in and would do his job very frantically. But it looks like all he can do is figure out a few notebook PCs at the cafe, so he’s not satisfied.”
Younger Brother Jyushimatsu’s Criticism of Choromatsu:
“He’s one to talk~ He’s fussy~ I wonder if he’s unable to become a bit more levelheaded? Don’t you think he cares too much about how society views him? He gets really conscious about things he’s unable to do, and I think it’s better if he stops doing that. It’s all a lie anyway! It’s undeniable that he’s excusing the things he can’t do as things he doesn’t want to do~ Todomatsu even says, ‘It’s all stuff coming from his mouth and not anywhere else’!”

Elliot prided himself on professionalism. As a waiter at Crimson Table, the most exclusive restaurant in the city, he’d served celebrities, billionaires, and eccentric party hosts alike. No matter the request, he maintained composure and provided impeccable service. But tonight, everything was about to change.
The evening began like any other. Elliot adjusted his tailored red vest, white shirt, and bowtie before heading to the private dining room. The party he was assigned to serve was a group of 20, led by a wealthy and enigmatic host. His coworkers had whispered about the peculiar requests this group had made in the past, but Elliot brushed off their chatter.
He entered the room to find the guests already seated, their eyes gleaming with excitement. The host, a tall man with slicked-back hair, stood and gestured for Elliot to approach.
“Welcome,” the host said, his voice smooth and commanding. “Tonight, you’re not just our waiter. You’re our guest of honor.”
Elliot blinked in confusion. “Guest of honor? I’m not sure I understand.”
The host smiled slyly. “You see, we’ve planned something special. You won’t be serving tonight—you’ll be dining. Every dish prepared for us will be yours to enjoy. And when the food is gone…” His grin widened. “Let’s just say we’ll ensure the feast doesn’t end there.”
Elliot glanced at the long table, already laden with appetizers and entrees. Before he could protest, the guests began cheering and clapping, urging him to sit at the head of the table. Hesitant but intrigued, he took the seat.
As the first course arrived, Elliot’s resistance faltered. The food was exquisite—a parade of decadent flavors and textures he couldn’t resist. One plate turned into two, then five, then ten. The guests cheered louder with every bite, their voices spurring him on.
His uniform began to strain as his belly expanded, pressing against his vest. By the time the main courses arrived, his once-crisp outfit was visibly struggling to contain him. His vest strained audibly, the seams groaning as his torso grew.
“More!” the guests chanted, laughing and clapping as Elliot devoured plate after plate.
The final dessert arrived, and as Elliot finished the last bite, his vest gave way with a loud tear, the fabric shredding into useless scraps. His shirt buttons popped, ricocheting off the walls, and his pants split down the sides with a resounding rip. His bowtie hung awkwardly around his thick neck, the last remnant of his uniform, as his swollen belly spilled forward, taut and round.
Elliot leaned back, panting, his enormous stomach gurgling loudly. He thought the night was over, but the host stood, clinking his glass.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” the host announced, “the real fun begins now.”
Elliot frowned. “What do you mean?”
One by one, the guests approached him, their smiles gleaming with excitement.
“Eat us,” the host whispered, leaning close. “You’ve given us a show. Now it’s time to finish the performance.”
The idea was absurd, yet somehow it felt natural, even irresistible. Before Elliot could question it, his mouth opened wide, and he swallowed the first guest whole. A rush of euphoria coursed through him as his belly swelled larger, growing impossibly heavy and round.
Another guest stepped forward, and Elliot didn’t hesitate. He took them in as easily as the first, his stomach surging outward with a deep, satisfied groan. The room erupted into cheers, the guests encouraging him as he devoured them one by one.
By the time the tenth guest disappeared into him, his belly had grown so massive that it pressed against the walls, the wood creaking under its weight. His skin stretched tight, warm and smooth to the touch, his body radiating power and indulgence.
“More,” Elliot murmured, his voice thick with pleasure. He reveled in the sensation of swelling larger with every gulp, his hands rubbing slow circles over his enormous stomach.
The remaining guests stepped forward eagerly, laughing as they vanished into his mouth. Each one added to the sheer mass of his body, his belly swelling heavier and rounder, gurgling loudly. By the time the last guest— the host himself—approached, Elliot’s belly dominated the room. It was a monumental, heaving mass, pressing against the walls and ceiling.
The host smiled as he climbed into Elliot’s grasp. “You’ve done beautifully, Elliot. Now, complete the experience.”
With practiced ease, Elliot swallowed the host, his stomach surging outward one final time. The room trembled under his enormous weight as his belly stretched impossibly large, filling the space. The walls cracked, and the ceiling groaned as his massive form pressed against them. His stomach gurgled contentedly, a towering monument to excess.
Elliot leaned back as far as he could, his body pinned by the sheer size of his swollen gut. He must have weight a ton or two, but he didn’t care. He had never felt so alive, so powerful. He ran his hands over the taut surface, marveling at the sheer immensity of himself.
“This,” he murmured, a satisfied smile spreading across his face, “was the best night of my life.”
