Marty and Masculinity
I think one of the most unheralded aspects of the Back to the Future franchise are the sucker-punches it delivers to toxic masculinity. Marty’s pretty embroiled in it in the beginning and the implication is that Doc has been trying his damnest to leach it out of him like a poison for years.
He tells Marty again and again and again that being “tough and rising to every dare and challenge isn’t what it means to be a man, let alone an adult. And the irony is that while Marty specifically sets out to change that about his father, he himself is protected from the changing timelines. If he wasn’t, he wouldn’t have risen so easily to Buford Tannen’s taunts in Part III. Marty successfully allowed his father to learn the lesson he himself needed to learn, hoping it would also better him, and it doesn’t. At least in the sense that it’s not a magic bullet. Marty still has to work on deprogramming himself and it’s great how the script writing throughout all three movies never shies away from showing him struggling with it.
The happy ending for Marty isn’t walking off into the sunset with Jennifer– he could have done that anyway whether he cast off the effects of toxic masculinity or not. No, Marty’s true happy ending is freeing himself from a mindset that would literally have destroyed his life.
When was the last time a movie did that?

I didn’t realize until I made the post yesterday, but Marty was willing to completely throw away his life and had many reservations about forfeiting form a duel that he had confirmation he was going to die in all to prove that he wasn’t chicken? He was literally willing to die? Like be killed (probably not quickly and easily) at seventeen because he wanted to prove to people that he was good enough? Marty why? who hurt you?

He also passed on those values about ‘family always helps eachother and defends eachother’ to his kids, seeing as Junior wanted to talk to his father before agreeing to commit crimes with griff, implying that Junior thought Marty would get him out of the situation (bc let’s be real, what 17 year old is going to ask their father if they’re allowed to go on a crime spree with their generational family enemy.) And Marlene literally tries to break her brother out of jail. Like I don’t know if ‘family always defends eachother’ could be taken any farther than that.
Back to the future Analysis: aka an analysis of how George’s behavior really messed up poor Marty’s sense of self worth
One thing that always stuck out to me about Marty McFly is that no matter what, he always stands up for whomever it is around him that needs help. It’s doesn’t matter if it’s defending his mom from Biff, jumping in front of a moving car to save his dad, or sticking by Doc’s side, no matter how much redicule it brings him, Marty defends anyone who needs it. I was wondering what inspired this trait in him.
I think it’s probably hurt that George never stood up for Marty. I mean it’s pretty implied that needles pushed Marty around a lot (though Marty didn’t really let him) and that Marty does not have many friends. it’s established in canon that Marty’s pushed around (literally) by Strickland at school and when Marty comes home and sees Biff, he doesn’t retaliate the way we see Marty do literally every other time in the trilogy he or a loved one is threatened/humiliated which implies Marty has some level of fear, or at least knows (likely from experience, knowing Marty) not to mess with Biff.
I doubt that in any of these situation where Marty is physically or mentally harassed, George has come to his rescue and defended Marty. When Biff is calling Marty a butthead (which definitely isn’t a special occurrence or something notable, but still something clearly makes Marty uncomfortable shown by the way he tenses up, not through the whole scene, but exactly as Biff addresses him), George doesn’t step up and tell Biff to leave Marty alone.
It’s one thing to let someone humiliate you, but to let someone humiliae your 17 year old son? Especially to let someone humiliate 17 year old son who also severely struggles with confidence (and handles it in the complete opposite way, but that’s a conversation for a different day) That’s completely different.
And maybe for a teenager that’s 9 months from being an adult, it’s not as big of a deal, but it’s made clear that George’s behavior has been the same for years and having your parents allow you to be mistreated as a little kid? That must suck. And of course, it’s not George’s responsibility to defend Marty from school bullies and needles. But it’s absolutely George’s responsible to defend Marty from Biff and even Strickland.
I feel like having a parent who lets other people step on you and tells you to avoid confrontation and to just take whatever’s thrown at you, even when you’re being bullied—that would lead to some serious issues because it almost implies that you deserve to be harassed.
It’s because of this that I think Marty is so quick to defend literally anyone who needs it. Because he knows what it’s like to be in a position where you want to be protected and backed up, but nobody’s willing to stick their neck out for you.

As a competitive flute player and a performance major I can 100% second that while most flautists are women, men, especially boys in auditions and competitions get favorable treatment because judges want them to “know that they are appreciated and stick with it!” It’s just a little representation of a much bigger issue
“Yes, being in a female dominated field, I do know what it means to be marginalized. “

Lloyd Montgomery Garmadon ^
characters that go through hell yet still believe in the goodness of humanity, still hope for the best despite everything, refuse to let darkness consume them because someone somewhere is always going to be good are literally my favourite, because they give me that little hope too

He’s come so far and I’m so PROUD of him! From a little brat with a horrible evil laugh, to a hero.
Also, this character means so much to me; I’ve grown up with him and as he grew and matured, I have too, and I think that’s so special

Haha garmafam sad thought of the day
The moment when garmadon pulls Lloyd out of the cage in the volcano in “the green ninja” and they hug eachother, is probably the first hug both of them have had in years.

Poll?
I know the Ninjago fandom is pretty small, maybe 500 at most?
I’m going to ask everyone who is an active member of the Ninjago fandom (Not just a side interest, etc.) to PLEASE Reblog this. I want to find out how many people there are.
