A brawl breaks out after you come to the defence of some poor helpless girl being harassed at the bar by a couple of idiots. Your boys come over to aid your cause. He gets the first punch in, but it feels kind of good—it gets your heart pumping. You pull back and windmill the beer bottle that’s still in your hand, hammering it down on his head and knocking him out. You and your boys stand over their unconscious drunken bodies, each of you holding the broken bottle in your hitting hand, a freshly unopened bottle in the other, and a mesmerized girl wrapped around you. These are the songs that will be written about your brotastic conquests.

There’s nothing more frustrating than having a great idea and not knowing how to execute it. There’s a blurry outline of a vision, but the details aren’t quite coloured in. The idea is dancing in the shadows in the back of your mind, just out of your periphery. At times like that, it often helps to decompress. Some people pray in order to clear their minds, while others go for a run or meditate. Brian Borcherdt of Holy Fuck did the reasonable Canadian thing and locked himself up in a cold cottage somewhere in Nova Scotia. For years, he had an idea for a side project, but he could never flesh it out. The trip out east finally did the trick, though, and with a clear vision in mind, Borcherdt approached producer extroadinaire and member of Final Fantasy, Leon Taheny, to help him bring Dusted to life. The end result is an album that is wild and feral, a naked creature stripped down to its flesh and howling at the moon for answers.

I nabbed Mr. Borcherdt for an interview whilst shopping for vinyl immediately after his set at Sonic Boom! Dusted played on Wednesday, February 13 to kickoff Wavelength Music Fest 2013.

If you were at Sonic Boom! on Wednesday, February 13, you wouldn’t have heard the usual clacking sound of people rolling through CD’s like a rolodex. Instead, you would have been privy to a somewhat awkard, yet intimate performance in the farthest reaches of the store by Brian Borcherdt and Leon Taheny, the duo known as Dusted.

Final Fantasy? Great band. Holy Fuck? Fantastic band. Put them together and what do you get? One hell of an impressive band.

Imagine an old locomotive, chugging full steam across the horizon and over rich rolling green hills, with the sun rising just above it. The train’s roar can be heard off in the distance. Its cry turns into a howl as it approaches, jerking at your heart as it travels up your spine. Another day has been given life. This is the power of the blues behind the force of the Addington County Revue.
