This time I tried to draw The Beach Boys' phantom album Smile. Smile is Brian Wilson's second ambitious work after Pet Sounds, and is an album that was created using a very delicate technique of connecting fragments of multiple songs called "fields" to create one song. Brian Wilson became mentally ill during the production due to the delicate work and being overwhelmed by Sgt. Pepper's of The Beatles.

Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys has passed away. He was a genius musician. Without him, Sgt. Pepper's of The Beatles would not have been born. It is no exaggeration to say that Paul McCartney's eccentric bass playing was influenced by Brian Wilson. News of the deaths of legendary stars is noticeable. At the same time, Sly Stone also passed away. May he rest in peace.

during the recording of the album "Revolver" and are interesting songs with many experimental elements such as changing the speed of the recording tape and adding reverse playback. There are many photo sessions from the filming of this promotional film, and it can be said that the fact that the stars are openly showing off their smoking, which is unthinkable now, is a characteristic of the time. It is also interesting that all four members are wearing different types of suits.

今回僕はThe BeatlesのPaperback WriterとRainのプロモーション・フィルムでの彼らの姿を描いてみた。この2曲はアルバム「Revolver」のレコーディング時に収録された曲で録音テープのスピードを変化させたり、逆再生を加えたりなど実験的要素の多い面白い曲となっている。このプロモーション・フィルム撮影時のフォト・セッションも多く残っているのだけど今では考えられないスターの喫煙姿を堂々と披露しているところが時代の特徴とも言える。また4人全員異なる��イプのスーツを着用しているところも興味深い。 https://www.instagram.com/toru_fukuda/p/DKmAxUMRWIo/

This time I drew my favorite album, Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton. Eric debuted the combination of a Gibson Les Paul and a Marshall amp on this album for the first time. The thick, edgy, and powerful sound astonished many guitarists. Gibson had stopped producing Les Paul models at the time, but this album prompted them to be reinstated. When I was in my late teens, I was obsessed with the copy of “Hideaway” on this album. I remember Eric’s scales, which caught my fingertips, were very difficult. After this album, Eric Clapton formed the supergroup Cream and stunned the world.

今回は僕が大好きなBLUES BREAKERS WITH ERIC CLAPTONを描いてみた。EricはこのアルバムでGibsonレスポールとMarshallアンプの組み合わせを世界で初めて披露した。図太いがエッジの効いたパワフルなサウンドは多くのギタリストたちを仰天させたという。Gibson社は当時、レスポール・モデルは生産中止になっていのだけどこのアルバムをきっかけに生産が復活することに。僕が10代後半の頃このアルバムの「Hideaway」のコピーに夢中になった。Ericのプリっと指が引っかかるスケールがとても難しかったのを覚えている。このアルバムのあとEric Claptonはスーパー・グループCreamを結成して世界の度肝を抜くことになる。 https://www.instagram.com/toru_fukuda/p/DJZPBEhTAu9/

I drew "MEET THE BEATLES". This was The Beatles' second album in the US and is said to be the record that many Americans have been familiar with for a long time. The song selection is strange, starting with "I Want To Hold Your Hand", because it is customary in the US music industry to include the most recent hit songs on the album. Another feature is that the original black and white photo of "WITH THE BEATLES" has been colored blue. MEET THE BEATLESを描いてみた。アメリカでのThe Beatlesの2枚目のアルバムで多くのアメリカ人が古くから馴染みがある彼らのレコードといえばこれなんだとか。アメリカの音楽業界の商習慣から直近でヒットした曲をアルバムに収録するという慣例をもとにしているため"I Want To Hold Your Hand"から始まる奇妙な選曲がされている。またオリジナルのWITH THE BEATLESの白黒写真を青く着色しているのも特徴。 https://www.instagram.com/toru_fukuda/p/DJwZf88TT95/

I received a bandana from Victor Entertainment, which is a tour item for Love Psychedelico. The bandana has the cover of my fifth album, Abbot Kinney, printed on it, and I was surprised at how huge it is.

I had a bit of a connection with Yanaka Cemetery in Nippori. I drew Eiichi Shibusawa himself in front of his grave, the founder of the modern Japanese economy. In front of his grave is a small park-like space with a large tree and benches. People who come to pray here can have a drink, rest, or eat their lunch. It's a very pleasant place, even though it's a cemetery. I was resting and eating some rice balls, but inspiration struck me, so I drew the man in his grave in the sketchbook I always carry with me. I didn't want to be rude, so I bought some incense at the management office nearby and prayed. ちょっと縁があって日暮里の谷中霊園へ。近代日本経済の始祖、渋沢栄一さんの墓前で渋沢栄一さんご本人を描いてみた。渋沢栄一さんのお墓の前は小さな公園のようなスペースがあって大きな木とベンチが置かれている。ここで���参りに来たひとたちが飲み物を飲んで休んだりお弁当を食べたりしている。墓地なのにとても気持ちがいい場所なのだ。僕もおにぎりを食べて休んでいたのだけど何気にインスピレーションが湧いてきていつも持ち歩いているスケッチブックにお墓の中のご本人を描いてみたと言うわけです。失礼になるといけないのですぐそばの管理事務所でお線香を買って手を合わせてきました。

This illustration is from the British TV show David Frost show, Hey Jude. It is a famous promotional film that starts with a close-up of Paul. Before the recording of this show, Paul and Ringo had a big fight about drumming during the recording of Back In The U.S.S.R. Ringo was the first member to leave The Beatles. (By the way, Paul is the drummer on this song on the White Album, and that's why he's a bit of a bad drummer.) They made up and came back at the time of the recording of this show. You can now watch the show on YouTube. It's funny how John has been messing around since the beginning, and how David Frost, fed up with it, responds in a polite manner. It's also interesting that all four of them are wearing messy outfits with no sense of unity.

今回のイラストはイギリスのTV番組David Frost showでのHey Judeを描いてみた。Paulの大アップで始まる有名なプロモーション・フィルムのことである。この番組の収録の前、Back In The U.S.S.R. のレコーディング時にドラミングのことでPaulとRingoが大喧嘩をしてしまう。なんとThe Beatlesの脱退1号はRingoなのだ。（ちなみにWhite Albumのこの曲のドラムはPaulでちょっと下手くそなのはこの事件のせい。）この番組の収録のタイミングで無事仲直りして戻ってきたと言う経緯がある。今ではこの番組の模様はYouTubeで見ることができる。Johnが冒頭からずっとふざけていて、うんざりしたDavid Frostが社交辞令のような対応をしているところが面白い。また4人とも衣装がメチャクチャ���統一感がないなのも興味深い。 https://www.instagram.com/toru_fukuda/p/DJhGCnjzFRg/

Hands across the water Heads across the sky Today I drew my favorite Paul McCartney's RAM. When it was first released, it was a huge hit all over the world, even though it was met with mixed reviews from critics. His wife Linda's loud chorus was criticized, but I thought it was great that he made a record with a photographer's wife. It's such a good album that I play it often at work. 今日は僕の大好きなPaul McCartneyのRAMを描いてみた。今では考えられないがリリース当初は評論家から散々な評価でJohn Lennonも羊ならぬ豚の頭をつかんだパロディ写真を発表するなどえらく冷たく扱われたアルバムだ。それでも世界中で大ヒットすることに。世間での評判では妻Lindaのボリュームの大きいコーラスが槍玉に上がっていて僕も初めて耳にした時は「Lindaの声がデカい。」という印象だった。今は写真家の奥さんとレコードを作るなんて素敵だなと思うようになった。仕事場でも頻繁に流すぐらいいいアルバムです。ただし　1993年にリリースされたリマスター盤ではラストの「The Back Seat of My Car」で感動的に終わったにも関わらず「Another Day」「Oh Woman, Oh Why」の2曲がボーナス・トラックとして追加され台無しになっている。Paulのアイデアなのかな。未聴のかたはオリジナル盤をお聴きすることを強く薦めます。 https://www.instagram.com/toru_fukuda/p/DJRpd_Vz4R6

This time I drew my favorite artist, Sly Stone. "High on You" is his solo album. It is not highly rated because it is not as impressive as "Stand!", "There's a Riot Goin' On" and "Fresh" from his Family Stone days. However, it is really enjoyable, from the sharp funk numbers to the songs with strings. I love this album. By the way, Sly Stone is still alive and retired, but he is a rare presence who embodied historical performances such as Woodstock.

今回は大好きなSly Stoneを描いてみた。「High on you」は彼のソロ名義のアルバム。Family Stone時代の「Stand!」や「There's a Riot Goin' On」、「Fresh」などの凄みが薄れているせいか世間での評価は低い。しかしながら切れ味鋭いファンク・ナンバーからストリングスを交えた楽曲など実に楽しめる。僕はこのアルバムが大好きだ。ちなみにSly Stoneは今なお存命で隠居はしてしまったがWoodstockなどの歴史的公演を体現してきた貴重な存在だ。 https://www.instagram.com/toru_fukuda/p/DJJNNOKR7rf/

ゴールデンウィーク明けの井の頭公園。新緑がとてもきれいでした。神田川の源泉の徳川家ゆかりのお茶の水。鮮やかな弁財天。ここは水にまつわる場所が多い。歩いているだけで気持ちがいい。
