Are you adding new custom patches to a letterman jacket, backpack, or your daughter’s Girl Scout uniform? Although the process is easy, even for a novice crafter, it is important that you’re aware of the precautions and thoroughly read the directions. At Total Custom Patches, all of our patches include iron-on adhesive, at no additional cost, for easy application

Fabric

The first step is to determine what type of fabric you plan to add the patch to. Cotton and denim are the best fabrics for iron-on custom patches. Use caution if applying to polyester and never attempt to apply to silk or chiffon. Check the tag for care instructions and make sure the fabric is okay to iron.

Placement

Decide where you want to place the patch or patches. You might want to try pinning multiple patches with a safety pin first to be sure about the layout and look you desire or if using a single patch to attach it in various places, whether on your jacket, jeans or other piece of clothing, to determine the best place.

Prep

Using an ironing board, or, if you don’t have one, a strong table and bath towel, iron the garment before ironing on your patch to ensure you have a clean, flat surface. Heat your iron to the hottest possible temperature setting that your fabric will tolerate, making sure the steam is off and the iron is emptied of any water.

Iron

Place your patch exactly where you want it and make sure it isn’t crooked. Cover your patch and surrounding fabric with a thin cloth or towel while making sure not to have moved your patch. Put the iron on top of the patch and hold down firmly for about 15 seconds. Check that the patch is firmly attached by gently lifting up the edges. If it is not attached securely, apply the iron for another ten seconds, being careful not to over iron, and then allow the patch and fabric to cool.
