my biggest character development was going from absolutely despising Cam (Date Everything) because I believed that Cameron is a bad name for a trash can character to having beef about his attitude to feeling really bad calling him gross to seeing him as cute and actually a fun guy that can hold his own in a conversation

Me, two days ago, watching the Ace Attorney anime: Huh. Miaâs magatama is yellow in this flashback. She normally has a blue one. Weird.
Me, last night: Wait one goddamn second I might be onto something here
HOLY SHIT THE MAGATAMA COLORS HAVE SIGNIFICANCE
(Please note: Iâm currently partway through case 4-3, so I might amend this post if later games turn out to have more information on this. Also, I have no idea if people have already realized this, given that Iâve been avoiding going into any of the fandom tags to try not to spoil myself too badly.)
Category 5 autism event under the cutâŠ
Alright soâover the course of the original trilogy and its anime adaptation we see magatamas in the following colors:
Yellow
Blue
Green
Pink
And lavender
And the breakdown for who has what color is as follows:
Maya always wears yellow
Mia wears yellow before she abdicates her claim to the Masterâs seat, then switches to blue
Pearl always wears blue
Misty is seen wearing yellow in flashbacks, and the magatama Morgan is holding in a certain scene in episode 15 (Iâm pretty sure itâs 15) of the anime is also yellow
The one Phoenix has is green
The big wooden one in Hazakura Temple is also green
Bikini wears pink
Iris wears lavender
So then, what in the heck does all that mean? Here are my thoughts.
Yellow is the main familyâs colorâor, a little more specifically, the color of magatama worn by people who are in the direct line of succession. The people we see wear this color are Mia, Maya, and Misty, and Mia stops wearing it after she abdicates.
Blue is the branch familyâs color, or rather, itâs worn by close relatives of the main family who arenât in the direct line of succession. Pearl exclusively wears blue, and Mia wears blue after she abdicates (and is therefore no longer in the direct line of succession).
Green allows its holder to see Psyche-Locks. We never see anyone do this with any magatama other than the green one Maya gives to Phoenixâspecifically, we as the player never see any hint of Psyche-Locks while weâre playing as Mia, whose magatama is a different color, and in case 3-2 Maya (who has a magatama herself) is surprised to learn that Phoenixâs can do that. Plus, the big wooden one in Hazakura Temple is green as well, implying some significance to green; especially since it wouldâve made a lot of sense for it to be either yellow (the main familyâs color) orâŠ
Pink, which is worn by the temple nuns. In more detail, as far as I can tell this color is worn by members of the Kurain School who have little to no spiritual power but still play an important role, as itâs the color Bikini wears and while she doesnât seem to be able to channel herself, she runs Hazakura Temple and itâs a requirement that either she or another nun supervises any spiritual training that happens there.
And that brings us to lavender, our final color. This is a fun oneâIâm pretty sure itâs less a color with its own significance than it is a subtle hint about Irisâ true identity! Lavender is approximately the color youâd get by mixing temple nun pink and branch family blue!
So anyway, thatâs my thoughts on it! If anyone else has thoughts or details to add Iâd love to hear them, but please remember Iâm only on case 4-3 and would like to not get too spoiled about the later games!

Something I find incredibly cool is that theyâve found neandertal bone tools made from polished rib bones, and they couldnât figure out what they were for for the life of them.Â
Until, of course, they showed it to a traditional leatherworker and she took one look at it and said âOh yeah sure thatâs a leather burnisher, you use it to close the pores of leather and work oil into the hide to make it waterproof. Mine looks just the same.âÂ
âWait youâre still using the exact same fucking thing 50,000 years later???â
âWell, yeah. Weâve tried other things. Metal scratches up and damages the hide. Wood splinters and wears out. Bone lasts forever and gives the best polish. There are new, cheaper plastic ones, but they crack and break after a couple years. A bone polisher is nearly indestructible, and only gets better with age. The more you use a bone polisher the better it works.â
Itâs just.Â
50,000 years. 50,000. And over that huge arc of time, weâve been quietly using the exact same thing, unchanged, because we simply havenât found anything better to do the job.Â
