do fic readers know that their comments actually influence the course of the story sometimes? i don't mean in a "you need to write it this way because i say so 😡" type of comment, i mean when people are asking questions or really engaging with the plot and the themes in the comments they sometimes bring up things that i didn't even think of, or dig into parts of the story that i've overlooked, or get really interested/fixated on something i was going to just kind of glance over--and it has me going 'oh wait that's actually really interesting, that's a good point' and fully adding or tweaking or changing things about the story going forward. i'm literally adding an entire additional chapter to something right now because someone's comment had me like "oh i didn't dig into that as much as i could have." you have impact!

John B is just a senior trying to finish his internship and get out before the neuro rehab ward breaks his heart. Because watching disabled people struggle? He doesn’t think he’s built for that.
But then he walks into Room 312 and meets JJ—a boy with bruised knuckles, trembling hands, and the kind of eyes you don’t forget.
After a brain injury caused by his father’s violence, JJ is left with cerebellar ataxia. He walks like a baby deer, even with a walker. Feeding himself is a mess, his speech is slurred, and he hates how much help he needs. He falls more times than he can count—physically and emotionally.
And Victor Shoupe is the one who catches him. He visits after every shift, sits through every therapy session he’s allowed to, and learns the schedule of JJ’s meds like it’s second nature. He’s not biologically family—but he shows up like one. And slowly, JJ starts to believe maybe he’s not as alone as he thought.
None of them expected to find love in the darkest parts of their lives— but sometimes, that’s exactly where it waits.

Tumblr media
Synopsis: JJ studied. For the first time in a long time, he really tried. With dyslexia and late-night sessions with Kie, he was finally ready to pass the test that would decide his future. But when a fight with his dad leaves him with a concussion the night before, everything he's learned vanishes in a blur of spinning words and pounding pain. And Pope, his best friend, the straight-A student, can’t just sit back and watch him fail.
Pairing: JJ X Pope
Tumblr media
Them Classroom is tense, pens clicking, shoes tapping under the desk and students whispering with their seat neighbors. The big midterm. One of those make-or-break tests that teachers warned you about all year. The one that counted more than any of them wanted it to.
Mr. Adams, the math teacher, hands out the papers, laying them face down on each desk. When he reaches Pope, he gives him a nod, one that tells you're gonna do as good as always. Because to Pope, math comes as naturally as breathing. He technically doesn't even have to study—but of course he still does. Every day, whenever he has time. “The scholarship doesn't come from nothing.” He always tells the pogues.
But when Mr. Adams looks at JJ, who's sitting next to Pope, his expression gets stern. He slips the test in front of him, his fingers lingering a little longer on the paper. “I hope you prepared for this JJ. This will decide your future.”
JJ did prepare for it. He really really did. The moment the teacher told him that this test would determine if he had to repeat the school year, he didn’t stop studying. He even made Kie read the questions out loud for him—every night. It was the only way the words didn’t twist and blur on the page.
Dyslexia made it hell, but for once, he’d pushed through it.
He can't stay behind while all his friends move up a grade. School is hell on earth even with his friends, he can't even imagine what it would be like without them. He doesn't want to find out.
Until yesterday he was confident that he could do it, but then his father came home. His voice was slurred, he staggered and JJ could smell the alcohol from miles away. He doesn't remember how he made it out of the house. He just remembers how he woke up on the chateau couch, John b sitting beside him full of worry, pressing a cold pack to his head.
And now, sitting in the classroom, the effects from yesterday still linger. His head is throbbing, his thoughts are running through thick syrup, and he feels the need to throw up.
Pope looks up at his best friend. He's pale, dark circles under his eyes. His lip is busted, there's a cut on his cheekbone, parts of his face are already turning blue and purple. But worst of all is the way JJ is rubbing his temple. Pope can make out a laceration at the back of his head, mostly cleaned but blood is still sticking to his blonde hair, painting it a deep red.
Pope nudges JJ under the table. He turns his head around, and immediately winces as the light shines into his sensitive eyes.
“Hey…” Pope's hand finds JJ's upper arm, he rubs over it, keeping his voice low.
JJ shields his eyes from the bright fluorescent lights. He forces a smirk, but everyone could tell that it's fake. JJ always does that. He always acts like everything is fine even when it's not.
“I studied this time, man. Even asked Kie to help me. I was ready…”
“What happened?”
“Just my dad being my dad.” JJ shrugs, his lips pressed into a thin line. “Not the first time, not the last time.”
“Bro—”
Pope is cut off by Mr. Adams.
“Alright, everyone. This test will determine a big part of your final grade. After you turn around, you have 45 minutes. No talking, no phones, and no looking at your neighbor’s paper. If I catch one of you, the test is an F immediately. Make sure your name is on the top, or else I can't grade it. Does anyone have any questions?”
No one raises their finger.
“Great. You can turn the test around now. You've got this, just do your best.”
JJ turns it around, staring at the page. He's immediately hit with some text problem. There are so many graphs, then a second graph, another one, another text problem. The words start swimming like little fish in the ocean, letters have a dance party on the paper, questions blur beyond recognition. And the pounding headache just makes it worse. He grinds his jaw and tries again. But nothing. Everything is just gone. Everything he has learned so hard in the last weeks, erased with one hit to the head.
The pen in his hand trembles, everything is spinning. JJ's eyes squint, but the questions won't make sense. He runs a hand through his hair, leaning back into his seat with a defeated sigh.
That's it, he won't make the year.
Pope, on the other hand, flies over the questions. After 10 minutes he already finished half the test. He smiles and peeks over to see that JJ hasn't even made it past the first question. His smile fades. He can't be proud of himself at that moment, it doesn't matter if he knows the answers. Not when JJ is failing.
The clock is ticking, each painful tick, tick, tick a reminder of how this could change JJ's whole life.
JJ knows the answers. He tried. He tried so hard. Pope knows how hard it is for JJ to memorize something with his dyslexia. But he did it. And now he has this damn concussion which is destroying everything.
He can't let that happen. JJ saved him so many times. He took the fall for him when Shoupe wanted to arrest him because of Sinking Topper’s boat. He owed so much money, and got badly beaten up by his dad just to protect him. And that wasn't the only time. Pope has lost count. The least he can do is help him now.
~~~~~
Pope finishes the test in another 15 minutes. He makes sure that every single answer is right, scribbles out some words and rewrites them, and throws in some spelling mistakes JJ usually does.
And then he writes JJ Maybank at the top.
He looks up, seeing Mr. Adams helping another student. Without thinking, he slides the paper to JJ, who looks up at Pope with furrowed brows.
He takes the blank test from JJ. The one that would've failed him.
And writes his name on it.
“Pope, what the hell?”
“you know these answers, I'm just helping you bring them to paper.”
JJ's throat bobbles. “Pope, this is your grade too.”
“Yeah, but I wrote straight A's the whole year, if I fail this one, I still pass. You won't.”
JJ wants to argue, but the overwhelming emotion swelling up in his chest and the dizziness make it impossible. Instead he just nods once.
Pope stands up, slapping the blank paper on the teachers desks. “I'm finished.”
Mr. Adams flips through the pages, then looks up at Pope, his expression pure disappointment. “Pope, what is this?”
“I didn't learn. I'm sorry but I don't know the answers.” Pope sits down again, flashing JJ a nervous grin.
He did the right thing.
~~~~~
When the school bell rings, and the students jump up, handing Mr. Adams the papers, JJ hesitantly stands up. He holds onto the desk, pressing his eyes together.
“Let me help you.” Pope says, sliding one arm around JJ's waist to support his weight.
Together they walk over to Mr. Adams to give him JJ's test—or better said Pope's. The teacher looks at them with narrowed eyes. “JJ, Pope. I need to have a talk with you.”
“Look Mr. Adams, I really did—”
“Stop it Pope. I'm not stupid. I know what you did and I want an explanation now, or else I will make both of you fail.”
Pope lets out a long breath, gently sitting JJ down in one of those uncomfortable School chairs. “I have a good explanation for you…”
"Pope, please." JJ whispers, but Pope can't stop.
“JJ knows these answers, he really does. But he got a concussion, a nasty one. And dyslexia. He doesn't want anyone to know, but here you go. These stupid tests—” Pope catches his breath, realising that maybe he shouldn't say too much. “Look, I know what I did was wrong. But JJ is not dumb. He just has some problems with words.”
“My brain's all scrambled eggs.” JJ slurs, half asleep.
“If that's how you want to describe it.” Pope shrugs. “It's not fair to let him fail. Please.”
Mr. Adams exhales through his nose, pinching the bridge of his nose. “JJ, where did you get the concussion?”
JJ's head snaps up, making the room spin momentarily. His eyes are full of fear, silently telling Pope to please not let him find out.
“He fell off his surfboard.”
Mr. Adams doesn't believe that fully, but it's not his place to dig in his students' private life.
And when he looks at the boy, bruised and broken, his heart softens. JJ Maybank is a menace in his lessons, but he's also just a boy who's hurting. “Look… I can't let you pass without performance. But what I can do… you can rewrite it.”
“Really?” JJ's voice is so quiet, like he had already lost hope.
“Yes. As soon as your head is better. And I'll read the questions to you, how's that?”
JJ beams up. “Thank you, so much. I promise I won't mess this up.”
“I know. And you Pope? You better not cheat again.”
Pope gives a tight nod. “Yes sir, I'm sorry.”
“And now get out of here, before I change my mind.”
Together they walk out of the classroom, JJ still heavily leaning on Pope.
“You know…” JJ grins. “you could've just written the answers on both papers, then maybe we wouldn't have been caught.”
Pope rolls his eyes, pulling JJ closer to him. “Shut up, man. My brain short-cutted. I'm not good at breaking rules.”
“I know. But you still did it for me. Thank you.”
“Anytime.”
~~~~~
Pope, John b, Kie and Sarah stand in front of the class room, anxiously pacing. They learned with JJ the last few days. Reading the questions to him and making him repeat the answers until he memorized each one of them. He's a pro now.
After 45 agonizing minutes, the door opens and JJ steps out. He's holding his paper, gazing at the ground, his lips pressed into a thin line.
“Shit, JJ.” Sarah whispers, seeing the look on JJ's face.
But then he beams up, holding the test in his hands like a trophy. “I passed!”
The whole group erupts in cheers. Pope steps forward, wrapping his arms around JJ, before lifting his feet off the ground.
“Whoa!”
“You actually did it!” Pope shouts with joy, gently setting JJ down.
“I got a B!”
Pope squeezes JJ's shoulders. “I'm so proud of you.”
JJ smiles, eyes glistening with unshed tears. “I couldn't have done it without you, thanks Pope. Really. I don't say it enough.”
“Don’t thank me. That’s just what best friends do.” Pope slings an arm around JJ’s shoulders, gently steering him toward the exit. “Now come on, let’s get out of here and enjoy the break. We’ve got the whole next school year to stress over stuff like this.”
“Yeah, because our boy doesn't have to repeat the year!” Kie shouts, nudging JJ.
“JJ,” Pope says with a grin, “next time, I’m sitting next to you for every test.”
JJ snorts, his first real laugh of the day. “Only if you promise not to cheat for me again.”
“Deal.”
And as they step out into the sunlight, JJ doesn't feel like a failure anymore—just a kid with a best friend who refuses to let him fail.
If you read the fic, leave the kudos. Leave a comment too, if possible. Just do it. It takes a few seconds of your time and it means the world to the writer.
Sincerely, me who just got told that my writing feels like watching a blockbuster movie. I don't care if they were sincere or not, I'll be thinking about that comment for the rest of my life and every time I feel bad about my art, I'll remember that someone once liked it.
