UGH THEM šŸ˜šŸ’— My joint hit so hard that all I could think about was them. They are my coping mechanism
I'm starting this post over despite it all BECAUSE!!! the Maddie/Rhonda demons. they consume me. the way Rhonda tells Maddie, ā€œI'm not like you,ā€ was so homoerotically charged. to me. the way that she's an active example of the thing she's talking about. she doesn't let anyone in, so she'll snap at Maddie to hide her embarrassment, her envy, her shame. and she has plenty of reason to be jealous of Maddie! I can't blame her! Maddie has friends on the living side who love her, who are looking out for her, who want the best for Maddie whether she's alive or dead. she has Simon. like Rhonda pointed out in that same scene, Maddie also has no trouble making friends with the ghosts. they've all known each other for decades, and here Maddie is, effortlessly inserting into their group in a manner of months. Rhonda doesn't have any of that. as soon as she died, everyone she knew turned on her, gossipped about her and blamed her for her own murder. at this point Rhonda still believes that Marjorie, the one who truly cared about her, also jumped on this hate train. she has no one from life, and she never has. I can only assume her afterlife has probably also been pretty lonely. she was only the third ghost in the school, and I don't think Janet and Mr Martin made very good company, ever since the beginning they were attached at the hip with their own little projects. nobody, including Rhonda, ever got close to Dawn. Yuri wouldn't talk to anyone. she's friends with Wally now of course, but Wally is so lonely and desperate for socialization that he'll befriend a particularly chatty houseplant. Charley has both the bitter disposition and need for socialization that really brings the trio together. now Wally is dating Maddie, and Charley is keeping secrets for her, and they both follow her around to supervise her meetings with her living friend that still loves her. in Rhonda's eyes, Maddie is just reaping the benefits of a friend group that did take decades to cultivate. decades that Rhonda sat through every painful second of before Maddie's parents were even born. of course she's bitter. of course she's jealous.
it's not from a lack of wanting to, of course. if Rhonda didn't want to be like Maddie there would be nothing to get jealous of. her voice is so strained and so sad as she says that she doesn't let people in. clearly being this closed off isn't doing her any favors, but it still hurts. of course it still hurts, she'll have to be dead forever. trusting someone, believing she was capable of being loved, was literally the death of her. the last thing she ever did in her life was trust, and it was a mistake. when she watches Maddie it looks so easy. Maddie wears her heart on her sleeve like a gaping wound, and from the outside Rhonda can't see how much it hurts when someone puts their fingers in it, because it doesn't stop Maddie. her trust is brave. her kindness is brave. seeing the best in everyone around her is brave, and Rhonda has fancied herself a coward for a long time. Rhonda is, at her core, afraid. that's why she snaps, attacks, lashes out. it's them or her, because it was her.
throughout all of it though, there are few times when Rhonda takes this bitterness out on Maddie directly, or at least, never blames Maddie for her own jealousy. she doesn't shut Maddie out any more than she's shut everyone else out. she's still willing to spend time with her, she dresses her up for homecoming, they team up together to hunt for Mr Martin, and Rhonda still cares about getting Maddie's body back. she doesn't blame Maddie for ā€˜taking’ her friends, she blames herself for ā€˜losing’ them, for maybe never really being their friend in the first place. she's realizing again that she doesn't fit in, and Maddie is just what helps her realize it, not the one that's pushing her out. so she goes to Mr Martin and she says get me out of here, I'll do whatever it takes, don't make me watch myself lose everything again. she goes to Mr Martin and says I'm so lonely, there's a hole in my chest and if you'll look at me for just a second maybe I can cover it. but the truth is that every time she goes to Mr Martin, it's still not her trusting, it's her punishing herself. she doesn't trust him, she's disgusted by him. but if he was inappropriate with Janet and she could move on, well maybe that was the answer, or maybe it was a risk that she had to take, something she would put herself through again. and she feels lonely, and she remembers his hands on Janet, and she remembers her teacher's hands on her, and she feels disgusting but she wasn't lonely. so maybe it's the risk she has to take. maybe that's all there is for someone like her. maybe she is broken, tainted. and then, what? Mr Martin won't even look at her. he's betraying her without ever putting his hands on her. and she's alone again, but maybe now she can fix it, if she can help Maddie she can fix it, get back in her friends' good graces.
then she fucks it up, she takes on too much responsibility because she's feeling awful, she can't open up so she never tells her friends what's going on and they call her a liar and they snap in her face. they don't understand. she was just trying to pull her weight. she was finally trying to reel everyone back in to her and pissed everyone off in one fell swoop. it's the final nail in the coffin, they've been growing apart for months now, and she just finished ruining it. she's embarrassed, ashamed, afraid. she stomps off, like she always does, like she's done for years. except this time when she storms off, Maddie follows her instead of leaving her alone. she doesn't leave. Rhonda snaps at her and still she doesn't leave. she knows it's not really her that Rhonda is mad at, so she stays. she asks questions. she asks Rhonda what she was thinking instead of assuming the worst. it's been a while since someone hasn't assumed the worst of Rhonda, even if it's usually intentional on her part, part of her shield. Maddie sees her as not a problem, but a person with a problem. she says they're in it together, that Rhonda isn't supposed to take this on by herself in the first place, she shouldn't keep secrets because they're a team, a family. she wiggled her way between every crack in Rhonda's defenses before Rhonda could even see her and now she's stuck. and Rhonda does get more open after this and does stop keeping things to herself, even when that has consequences for her. she trusts Maddie enough to listen to her, to take her advice seriously. she loves her enough not to disappoint her.
for Maddie, though, it's not easy. it never has been. before she ā€˜died’, Maddie was hardly honest with anybody. none of her friends knew about her home situation, and even Simon didn't know the worst of it. she hides things, too, she lies and makes up stories and leaves doors closed (literally). she only wears her heart on her sleeve now because it's been torn out from her chest, fresh and bleeding everywhere and she just can't stop it. that doesn't make it easy. Maddie says she's never asked anyone to solve her problems, but the truth is that she's never even asked for help with them before and she's still stumbling around teamwork. she's still stumbling around being open. she doesn't understand why Rhonda is so envious of her because this is new to her too. which is why it's so easy, I think, for her to find all of Rhonda's breaks and make a home in them. as much as Rhonda tries to deny it, they do have a lot in common. Maddie looks at Rhonda and sees herself and Rhonda looks at Maddie and sees something spectacular. and that something spectacular is still able to look at her, to look inside and understand her and still stay, still forgive her. but to Maddie, it's not even a question.
idk how to actually end this but in conclusion I think they should lez out. I think one night of laying in the courtyard and practicing talking to each other would fix them

Ah, yes, the good old movie trope where main character figures out her boyfriend is with somebody else and stumbles out of the party, crying, where she runs into her true love interest.
Wait a minute ...

this may be such an obvious detail but i think about it so much that is definitely the flower from maddies dress that rhonda went through the effort of asking dawn to add, which imo seems very unlike her for the most part
