They are voices and their lore is dependent on whatever song you're looking at. In some songs Rin and Len are in a relationship and others they're twins. In some songs Miku is romantic with Kaito, in others she's young.

People forget that while branded as idols, there is nothing canon about them because they are meant to be a tool for music.

There's a whole character of Hatsune Miku in the art style by the people who did Under Night and Melty Blood: Type Lumina. She was part of a collab for a mobile game called Dengeki Bunko: Crossing Void (a spin off of Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax).

It's so freaking cool!!!!! I adore all those fighting games and their sprites. It's so pretty.
