I was watching the first lego movie like I usually do and I might be the last person in the fandom to realize this but in the scene before Emmet and Lucy finally get to hold hands, there’s an octan sign that says “absolutely no kissing” and I just find that hilarious for some reason

How is emmet trans? I’m a bit confused. Not to be rude!

Hey friend! It’s totally okay if you don’t see Emmet as trans! My reasoning is that 1) he acts like a person who was raised to behave in a traditionally feminine way but is impressed by and strives to be friends with/behave similarly to very masculine men, 2) he is an adult in TLM2 but Rex still seems to have gone through puberty, which could be the effects of testosterone supplements, and 3) I’m trans and his personality and relationship to the world and other people resonates with me :) I wrote a 10 page paper on the subject if you care to read more!

Let’s get this off.

Rant #1: Benjamin “Benny” Blu Chu

This mother fucker right here. This ain’t about his character being bad, it’s about his character being so good that TLM2 fucked it up.

Benjamin “BENNY” FUCKING BLU CHU

This guy right here is probably second oldest next to Batman on the team. Who fucking knows how old MetalBeard is.

This little man survived getting his helmet cracked in space but ended up with brain trauma from it.

This character may not have had a lot of screen time but boy did he leave an impression on me and most others in the Lego Movie community. He had a lot to say without saying a lot.

Let’s get to the second time he’s on screen. (The first time, Vitruvius was addressing everyone to settle down) It’s the first movie, Emmet is giving his unplanned, poorly executed speech. The camera pans across the audience listening to him, no one is smiling. This man isn’t a Master Builder? We’re fucking screwed! BUT PAY MORE ATTENTION!! There is one, single person in the crowd. He’s smiling. He’s hopeful. He’s got faith in Emmet because what’s there to lose? He found the piece and despite his awful speech, he obviously wants to help!

This single person was the 1980s Spaceman, Benny fucking Blu Chu

Emmet was being tracked! Cloud Cookoo Land is being torn apart and everyone’s gotta get out as fast as they can! Benny’s siblings were obviously there already, and from what we see in later scenes they’ve already escaped. I’m assuming they wanted him to go with them, but what did he do instead? He went to greet Emmet in the most excited fashion.

He wasn’t blaming Emmet for anything. He was trying to impress him on the first meeting! Build a spaceship! Show him how cool your building skills are! Emmet’s obviously going to lead this mission, after all, you want to show him what master building can do!

So he had a bit of doubt on his face when Emmet made the double-decker couch. But do you know what he didn’t do? Shit on him for it. He let it be. Because at least Emmet is trying. (This’ll be brought up in Unikitty’s rant later)

Of course, Benny didn’t want to follow some nasty ass instructions, later on, that’s not what Master Builders do, he wants to build something cool! But do you know what HE DIDN’T DO? SHIT ON EMMET FOR IT. He was excited to follow through with the plan because Emmet actually has one. They’re going right in, all out.

They have never gotten this far before, sometimes faith and patience are all you need.

So the computer was a fucking piss, modern tech fucking hates the guy. It was probably built specifically to undermine him. So we know Benny actually can lose his shit, but I’ll be saving that for later.

Now everyone was captured. The world is going to end. Vitruvius just said that he made everything up as his dying words. Emmet is not “the chosen one” or whatever. There was no destiny to win against evil.

But the moment Business leaves, what does Benny do? He asks Emmet if he’s got any other plans. He doesn’t give two shits about fate, he gives two shits about how Emmet got them this far, so who’s to say he can’t get them farther?

Benny doesn’t judge anyone throughout the movie. He keeps faith in everyone, especially Emmet. He directly speaks to Emmet, he interacts with Emmet, he believes in Emmet, and god damn it, my boy over here obviously looks up to Emmet.

Benny’s one defining trait is not hovering Emmet, nor is it spaceships mind you. Benny is kind and compassionate, but he’s also loud and excitable. He’s also hella brave if you really pay attention. I mean, the blue spacemen are supposed to be security for god’s sake. You know, the bitches with a legit license to kill to keep other members of the crew safe?

Benny gets excited over spaceships but he never revolved himself around them in the first movie. He helped in other ways and even if it fell apart, he also contributed to the submarine. You know, not a spaceship.

“It’s like an underwater spaceship.” Does not fucking count don’t @ me.

So now let’s look at my arch nemesis,

The Lego Movie 2,

and see what it did to our boy.

TLM2 fucking butchered him. Suddenly he has no faith in Emmet and sees him the way everyone else does. (Which the way everyone else sees him is just as bullshit but I’m not on those rants yet)

Then he had that line in Whatevra’s musical number. Why even include his ass in the story if he doesn’t have anything else to him? God damn.

Not only, but him judging Emmet is ridiculously hypocritical because, despite his new arm, Benny looks no different from what he used to. And he didn’t have enough screen time to portray his change. He had the one background line “My helmet is blue!” to argue who the fucking leader is before he got his ass snatched by alien Miku.

Now I do like how he was the one that noticed Lucy was missing when they were on the party bus, and I’ve already argued why him brushing it off would be fine. But that’s all he got. The one moment and it got fucked over by a joke.

Huh, TLM2 really likes to fuck over all of it’s serious or good moments with shitty jokes.

Benny was so devoid of character and had less screen time than he had in the first movie, TLM2 did not expand on anything with his character. It’s wicked sad.

Maybe, Warner Brothers, don’t give your sequel to a man who didn’t work on the fucking first one.
