Being lost in the delta quadrant with low amounts of resources and replicator credits causes some issues on board. The most suddenly pressing concern is everyone’s uniforms.
Most of them have run washing machines before, of course. A couple here and there, specifically the Maquis members, have hand washed. But almost all of them are very, very used to being able to replicate new uniforms when one gets damaged, and now, you’re kinda stuck with what you have. Everyone has to wash their uniforms, and more importantly, repair their uniforms.
Problem is, basically no one on board knows how to hand sew. Some of the Maquis members know how to fix stuff in a pinch, and a couple who are into old crafts do, but basically no one has. With one notable exception, of course.
Suddenly, home ec classes are being held. Tuvok is the main instructor. Neelix is, oftentimes, his assistant, generally because they’re held in the mess hall.
They both become the most dreaded part of everyone’s week, having their little stitch lines scrutinized by one and then complimented by the other. There’s tutorials on everything from how to patch up your uniforms to how to hand wash and properly dry them (Chakotay takes the place of Neelix for this one) to minor repairs on material goods in their quarters. Tuvok has many people come up to him over the course of their trip, holding out a beloved item from home in need of repair, and he takes the time to show them how to fix it.
It reminds him of his children. It reminds him of home, getting his hands busy again. It’s annoying dealing with everyone, it’s fulfilling in a way he hasn’t had in a while, and it ends up building rapport with the crew, so Janeway never lets it die out, and gives him a smile in return to every single unimpressed stare he sends her upon seeing another fully registered class on his schedule.

Money fucking sucks. It distorts everything: relationships, decisions, timelines, who gets to feel safe and who doesn’t. It turns something like “home” into a math problem. That’s brutal, and unfair, and I hate it so much.

"Your disabled joy as resistance doesn't mean as much if you can still work, drive, and ambulate." Okay. I will stop feeling joy then, I guess?

“well what do you do if you can’t afford the copay or there’s nobody in network?” “what do you do while waiting for 4 years to get on disability?” we die. that’s just it. that’s what the “safety net” in social safety net means. it’s supposed to keep you from plunging to your death. but 30,000 Americans a year plunge to their deaths from being unable to access healthcare. It’s been getting worse. It will continue to get worse.

ID: Digital art featuring Kravitz wearing two different outfits. He is a tall man with brown skin, long, dark locs, facial hair, and a muscular build. On the left, he is wearing a grey scarf over a black leather jacket, under which is a sheer, black midi dress, a purple shirt, and black trousers. He is also wearing black boots, and holding a dark grey canvas bag in one hand, and a phone with a grey phone case in the other. There are round glasses on his face and silver jewelry in his hair. On the right, he is a sheer long-sleeveed shirt over wearing a black, sleeveless top. He has on a long, dark gray skirt and black boots. A black blazer with dark red lining is drapped over his shoulders, with array of white and silver necklaces around his neck. He is holding a large textbook in one hand and has his other hand tuck in his skirt pocket. His hair is pulled back in a loose, messy bun. End ID
Drew some causal Kravitz(es) (???) on stream and we agreed that he's giving fashionable college student who has his life together.

My husband (has cancer) is a frequent customer of a local family-run pharmacy. It’s much more personal and welcoming there than at a chain pharmacy — they recognize us and I feel very comfortable asking them questions about medications (husband currently has a lot).
Anyway this week my husband’s prior authorization for a medication was delayed and he decided he would pay the out-of-pocket cost rather than wait a couple days for medicine he needs to go to work. It was a $100 prescription so this was tough but not earth-shattering.
Anyway; the lead pharmacist noticed that he was being charged for his normally-insured medication, asked him about it, and took 50% off as a gift. He said every year at Christmas they have staff and community contribute to a fund to help people pay for medications, and whenever a usual customer is facing an unexpected charge, they can cover some of the cost.
Reminder to support your local businesses, build your local community!

my new thing whenever an embarrassing memory jumps up out of some backwater neuron to t-bone my present-day thought process is to declare a statute of limitations. like i can burn down an entire building in the state where i live and the law deems it both unfair and illegal to prosecute me after six years have passed, i think that thing i said in high school can be expunged from my record.
