Shopping Sizing Tips for Trans* Masculine or Trans* Feminine
Posted on May 11, 2015 This post was written by Aris, one of our Ally Moms.
Shopping for clothes can and should be a positive experience. The following tips and tricks can be applied to any body – large or small, masculine or feminine, fat or thin, short or tall, and anyone in between or outside of the norm. For the best results – KNOW YOUR BODY SHAPE AND SIZE! Use a sewing tape measure (standard is 60”/ large is 120”) which can be purchased at any drugstore, craft store, or online and MEASURE The 4 most important measurements are:The fullest part of your chest Your waist Your hips Your inseam Store SIZE CHARTS are a shopper’s best friend and will vary from store to store. Most times, these store size charts can be found online at the store’s website and doing your sizing research before actually shopping will allow you to more accurately and confidently pull the right sizes off the rack the first or second time around! Pay LESS ATTENTION to what “department” you are shopping in/from and MORE ATTENTION to finding the right fit and look you desire REGARDLESS OF THE GENDER OF THE CLOTHING DEPARTMENT OR NUMBERED SIZING.Be creative and think outside of the box when it comes to finding clothing that fits, feels, and looks good – ESPECIALLY if the articles of clothing are UNISEX STYLES.Examples:Transfeminine folks might find that PLUS SIZE women’s sizing might provide a better fit than average MISSES sizing.Transmasculine folks might find that BOYS sizing might provide a better fit than average MENS sizing.Finding clothes to wear that look and feel good. You and only you will be able to decide what you feel you are comfortable wearing. There is no right or wrong and just like anyone, shopping is about trial and error. So get out there and SHOP CONFIDENTLY – because when you look good, you feel good and when you feel good, you look good!

*Important Note: Some of these brands may or may not be sold in other countries that require animal testing by law in order for the products to be sold, but I don’t have the time to research animal testing laws outside the US as well as what brands sell in those countries. So I’m leaving this one up to you.
Okay, this has been in my drafts for at least 3 months now. Time to roll it out! Keep in mind, these are videos/bloggers that helped me specifically and there may be some videos/links that aren’t as useful to you. That’s okay! I recommend you get lost in the beauty blogger side of youtube at some point, it’s a lot of fun and you never know what you’ll find!
And on a last note of disclaimer: I don’t follow the personal lives/twitter feed/rumors about anyone in these videos. I don’t know if someone is problematic or not, I am simply recommending the video.

I’ve been working through the swimsuit recommendations (thank you so much!) but I had to stop and share what we found on the modcloth site.
Check it out: http://www.modcloth.com/store/modcloth/rye-s-fashiontruth
It was the first feature that popped up for me, and I had to give my daughter the direct link so she could find it. She was thrilled!

In Memoriam
it's been a delayed post due to my own grieving, but we've lost another of our trans sisters to suicide this month. she attended my school, but due to her family's wishes, I'm going to keep her name private. she was a wonderful, wonderful girl, and she was supportive of her friends. I knew her only in passing, but we'd talked on several occasions and she taught me how to apply false eyelashes and how to look stunning in pink lipstick. rest in peace, sweet one, and know that you are missed. -- mod Vik

CHEST BINDER TUTORIAL
Hey, I’m Thekla, and I make custom-fitted binders. What this means is that I will make a binder to fit anyone, and now I’ve made a tutorial so that you can make one for yourself!
The binders are light, breathable, and are very easy to make - everything is done with straight lines, so as long as you can cut fabric and use a sewing machine you’ll be good to go!
(Tutorial starts under the cut)

Sorry for being late to the party, but happy trans day of visibility. I’ve stuck a toe or two out of the closet before now, but today I’m swinging the door wide open. I’m 23 years old and gender fluid. I’m going to properly introduce myself, most of my friends IRL know me as “The Dave”. I work as a Chinese food delivery driver in a town not known for queer friendliness and live in a sometimes less than supportive and understanding home, so I haven’t had many chances to safely explore and express myself. In person I use he/him pronouns for convenience and safety, but online it’d be cool if you asked while we chat. If you aren’t sure default to proper pronouns or nicknames like Sixaughtfive or Saffy for short. I hope to explore my gender more extensively this coming year and get into a different line of work. I’d like to connect with other queer people so please send me asks, I tend to follow back if I remember and I don’t tend to bite unless pressed. As a warning I swing wildly between quiet and obnoxiously chatty when excited. Anyway, nice to meet all of you!
