Trans Tips
20 posts
This blog is all about trans things! From tips for transitioning to things, I find fun. As I’m FTM myself a lot of my post will be about female to male transitioning, but this blog will always include MTF, non-binary, genderfluid, and all members of the lgbtq+ community!

This is super amazing!!
So I just heard about “Primed: The Back Pocket Guide for Trans Men and the Men Who Dig Them.” It’s the first sexual health resource written by and for gay, bi and queer trans men/ transmasculine people, put out by Rainbow Health Ontario, and it’s a very frank guide that answers basically any questions you might have about safer sex. They’ve released it for free download here.

Please excuse me as I laugh over this for the next 9 years
honestly the term “biohacking’ in reference to trans people accomplishes nothing except making transitioning seem really really really fucking cool

This is so helpful!!
Things they don’t tell you about top surgery
- Talk to the surgeon about the size you want your new areolas/nipples (don’t be afraid to ask)
- Numbness. No one talks about this for guys who are about to have surgery. You’re going to be numb all in your chest area, especially where the incisions were. They cut nerves as they pass along your chest, and it can take up to a year to regenerate those nerves. Still, feels super foreign for the first two weeks
- Make your bed into a pillow chair, body pillow, two on each side, and two for your head.
- Sleep alone. I tried to sleep with my girlfriend and it was miserable. You really do need the entire bed for yourself
- Go on Groupon, & get yourself a 10 foot lightning cable iPhone charger, BEST THING EVER, can reach from wherever you are
- Don’t take a week off from work, take two. You will regret the one week, and love the extra time
- When they say “don’t move too much, even after the first week”. LISTEN. I moved way too much and got so sore super quickly.
- Drink lots of water & eat if your taking the pain medication, otherwise your stomach feels super funky.
- Get stool softeners, & don’t be afraid to take those babies. Don’t wait a week to poop. you’ll surely regret it.
- The drains are scary & they may hurt while draining or rewrapping your dressings, but once they come out, the second they do, its no more pain, its crazy.
i hope this helps someone, because i wish i knew all of this when i was having mine a month ago. Looking back its like everyone forgets all the real negatives, its a great experience, & i healed very well & quick compared to most, but the first few days are crazy. They hurt, suck but it gets better.

Girl (2018)
There are many resources online about the dangers of binding for FTM guys, but far fewer that address the dangers of tucking.
This film, based on the youth of trans dancer Nora Monsecour and made in collaboration with her, features a young trans girl character tucking with tape in order to pass as a young woman. It is good to see that a film is drawing attention to MTF struggles, and the daily practice of flattening your groin, which can sometimes be very painful.
As an alternative to tape or bandages, I would recommend LeoLines underwear, available through Etsy. There are many reviews by trans women who recommend LeoLines panties and padded bras, and the underwear is so cleverly designed that many women report not even needing to tuck beneath the panties. (Also, as the designer of these products is a trans woman, all the marketing is aimed at trans women, and not crossdressers.)
>
Please do not flag this post. It is an educational post, intended for transgender girls who may watch this film and be encouraged to tuck unsafely. It is not explicit.

[Image text: Anonymous said to transgender teen survival guide: Something no one talks about is: not only transitioning medically is expensive. Getting your hair cut costs, buying new clothes especially from the men’s section costs a lot. No one ever mentions that. End image text.] Harper says: Tumblr ate your question so sorry for posting it strangely like this! You’re quite right. Although often few and far between, the trans community has stepped up to address this. Trans clothes swaps are becoming more and more established on the internet and in some universities. I know my university has a fairly regular trans clothes swap where people are encouraged to donate their old clothes and trans people can pick up as many clothes as they like for free in a safe and secure environment. I would encourage people to go out and find trans clothes swaps near you, or if you are able, perhaps start one up! We also have various posts about cheap clothing for trans people here and here. Second hand charity shops will also be a good way to find cheap clothes, and you may find some good ones given the Marie Kondo effect. Something I’ve also learnt myself is to find simple and effective ways of cutting your own hair in your own style. This could be something as simple as buying hairdresser quality scissors and following YouTube tutorials, or buying hair clippers for shorter cropped hair. This might be a big initial cost, but it can save you a lot of money in the long run if you do consider how much hair cuts cost - especially for shorter hairstyles where frequent haircuts are necessary. In the UK at least, we have a radical trans led group called Action for Trans Health and they have a fund you can apply to for any transition related costs. They take this to mean anything related to transitioning including new clothes, haircuts, travel costs to appointments and so on. They push nationally for a complete reform of the GIC process in the UK arguing for informed consent in medical transitioning. Their resources list covers everything from GPs you should avoid to help with housing and homelessness. If there are any similar groups or charities working for similar goals and access to grants for clothes, haircuts, etc. I would love to hear about them either from followers or fellow mods! In the meantime, it is well worth going out and reaching out to your local trans/LGBT community if at all possible, and finding out what amazing things people are doing for each other to help with the less talked about issues. (I have heard stories about a woman in a city near me who bought her own laser hair removal machine and does dead cheap sessions in a touring van for fellow trans people.) Google around for a bit in your local area, and don’t be afraid to start asking local LGBT charities for help either in finding a resource or (at the risk of sounding too far-fetched) setting one up if you have the time and energy to donate to it.
