Your art style is so cute and charming 🥺 Idk how to say it but I feel it really fits them so well too. may I request a little Jally (they’re my all time OTP but I’m happy with platonic Jally too)? Doing literally anything (maybe having a smoke together because homoerotic smoking is my weak spot)
ofc! this was a lot of fun to doodle

it’s been so long since i’ve replied to add on for one of my posts and even longer since i’ve read the book but you got my brain juices flowing so sorry for this long ass post but im looking back with more life experiences including similar situations as the characters and i can say that yeah i agree with you. i still feel the same that the shoe horned ‘drugs are bad’ with zero nuance was a poor writing choice on susan’s part (but what’s new lol) if it was written where both characters aren’t treated as bad/good guys for their choices and reactions and instead placed the reader to make that decision i would’ve liked the book and ending more.
rant below (please note it’s been years since i’ve read the book so im going off memory but i wanted revisit these characters and the ending thar did them dirty. take this all with a grain of salt)
but just for fun im going be looking at this with way less basis towards ‘drugs are bad in every situation and dealers are evil in all instances’ and focused more on the fact that mark was given a very short stick in life and made an independent choice to push drugs to bring in some necessary money to help support himself, his best friend/adoptive brother, and his best friend’s mom/adoptive mom (who is often sick and has many medical bills that byron can’t afford on his own) mark wants to help but work is hard to come by because of his record. mark isn’t always a good person (literally jumped a guy for fun) but he does genuinely care about the people in his life. he doesn’t tell anyone what he’s doing to keep his adoptive family having to face how desperate mark felt in needing to help support them. if becoming a dealer was the right choice is HIGHLY debatable and so is a lot of his actions but his reasoning is moreso justified in the sense he can’t be blamed for feeling like it was his best option for what he could to help with money. he was in a difficult situation with no right answer. it’s not his first time being put into a tough spot and made the active choice to sell drugs.
on the flip side we have bryon who has a different set of ideals and stronger principles because he didn’t have go through the difficult ‘no right answer’ situations that mark had to face first hand since a young age. (mark literally watched both his birth parents shoot each other) still bryon has gone through some heavy situations and was affected a lot by them. his mom being sick. seekng charlie dead. he’s also going through the motions of being a teenager. (mark is going through that at the same time but has thicker skin and is more able to move forward with life). bryon needs more time to process things and desperately wants to do the right thing in hopes that it’ll fix everything but it wont. he isn’t always a good person but he tries. he’s a jealous person and judges at times but he wants to be better without knowing how. then during a really rough patch in his life he sees what some of these street drugs can do to a person, i. e. m&m’s bad trip that completely screws him. it’s scary to see something like that happen to a friend and without fully understanding it all bryon just knows that he doesn’t want any part in something that he knows can cause harm. bryon wants things to be black and white because it’s easier to process and handle. a right and wrong and bryon thinks he knows the difference and which to decide in most situations. when he finds out what mark is doing he’s put in a difficult situation with no right answer. its his first real instance where he has to independently make a decision that will deeply affect his (and mark’s) life. in the end he commits to his principles and calls the cops on mark.
i feel like when bryon sees mark pushing he’s seeing all the flaws with mark for the first time instead of glancing over them and sees how different they are on a fundamental level and he’s confused and upset and just knows he wants nothing to do with the same drugs that their friend had a bad trip on. bryon doesn’t know what to do because mark is basically his brother but he’s doing things that go against bryon’s principles and he wants to put an end to it all immediately. we see the events unfold and we know it isn’t going to end well. mark offers space. bryon kicks him out. mark is upset about that. bryon decides to call the police. mark feels deeply betrayed.
if instead of painting a black and white scenario (which to be fair fits bryon’s character. while it’s upsetting it’s not beyond him. mark’s reaction is more outlandish towards the end) it could’ve better shown where they split as people with varying principles. i wish that in the ending we were shown that while they’ve been close since childhood they been shaped differently by the things they been through and they’re thrown into a situation where they’re on completely opposing sides but still with the common interest of helping each other. mark wants to repay bryon and his mom for taking him in. bryon wants help mark clean up his act. it feels too mean spirited and forgets the purpose of these character’s drives in favor of a weird drugs are bad message that distracts from the actual story. more could’ve been done in leaving the reader question if mark was justified or if bryon made the right choice. instead we’re left with this bitter unfulfilled feeling of ‘it shouldn’t have ended this way’ and yet the upsetting thing is that despite the shitty ending it still gets the point across. people grow apart and make decisions that can leave us resentful or forgotten to the background. that pretending everything has a right and wrong answer or treating things and people as black and white (trying make it as simple as when we were kids) isn’t going fix anything and sometimes holding onto to the past when too much has changed can make it worse. we will lose people in our life and sometimes it’ll be our fault or we simply grow apart. sometimes we will make tough decisions and it’ll be the wrong choice and we will live with those mistakes but still everything keeps moving forward. we’re always going wish things end differently. we’re always going want things to be like how they were before but it can’t be and regardless life goes on.
maybe it’s because i grew up knowing kids that did drugs and stuff but when i first read that was then this is now in the 7th grade i was so angry and confused that bryon ratted out mark for selling drugs when he was doing it to help bryon’s sorry ass make ends meat. and i get that bryon never had to deal with something like that but i still think he went about it really poorly. mark said he would give bryon space to think about it which is fair and he understands why but bryon kicks him out instead. says mark can’t take the car that charlie left for both of them, throws his stuff out the car starting a small fight and then goes back inside to call the cops on him. there are a lot of steps bryon took that could of been avoided so that mark didn’t end up hating him and later try kill him.
#MAN THIS IS LONG#almost as long since i’ve posted on this blog#i use to write eassys on this sort of thing it’s been a while#i appreciate the chance to do it again for old times sake#thank you for your add on feel free add more any timr on any post#btw sorry about this reply being so late i dont check this blog very often anymore

I have a couple of thoughts about this: (1) giggles aside, who else is Soda putting to sleep? How often does this come up? Soda is the sort of person who genuinely likes to give back rubs. I find people like that fascinating. (2) we also have Pony’s conflation of himself and Soda, as also shown at the rumble, see below.

almost all of the notes on this post is just people telling me when their parents hooked up
dallas’s birthday being in november implies he was conceived in february so i headcanon that he’s a Valentine hook up that ended with the girl being pregnant and his dad being forced to deal with it. it would be ironic that dal was conceived on the day of love despite being deprived of it for most of his life
