my controversial video game romance opinion is that the focus should always be on what the characters want rather than the player. specifically when we're talking about RPGs like baldur's gate or dragon age that really are not "romance games" but rather character-focused narrative roleplaying games. the focus should be on the characters, their stories, and what they want. romance should not come at the cost of a more compelling character arc. would romance even make sense for that character, does it align with their current goals or does it actively hinder them? will a romance actually bring something interesting to their narrative or will it only detract from it? "available for romance" is not a personality trait and should never be the priority in a companion's design.
also this overlaps a lot with one of my favorite discussion topics which is character autonomy. allow characters to have boundaries, give them hard lines that the player cannot cross (and punish the player when they do), give characters that depth and interiority and let them exist outside of the player and the player character. it's so much more compelling and it will make any romance/relationship with that character a lot more rewarding.

i’m gonna start doing this to bioware characters . you like cullen? well what about THREE cullens
i think more people should hc their favorite characters as having DID. as a treat. and more people should give their ocs DID. and more people should make world's most heavyhanded system allegories. and we should have systems who r respected as people n systems who get to be things other than shock villains and systems who get to be systems casually and systems for whom its a huge part of their story and systems whos plurality affects how they interact with The Lore in a way that isnt weird as hell about them. amen. obligatory disclaimer that i know not all systems have DID and vice versa. amen
#‘why cullen’ i like him#i dont think he’d be my top pick actually. unsure as to who would be#other than. anders. because he is kind of just. i mean. …gestures to him and justice. yeah#i think lucanis has smth going on also? but i havent played veilguard yet#everybody vote now who i hit with my beam (dissociative identity disorder)#earth to mars

otranto is such a funny minor character in a josiemance inquisitor’s life because when you duel a guy for your true love’s hand you just don’t expect him to then marry your true love’s sister and now you’re canonically expected home in time to be there for his third kid’s birth because apparently you guys have that relationship. do they all hang out. is it ever weird.

Choice meanings:
No Shepard Without Vakarian (healthy): It’s as good as a relationship (platonic or otherwise) could be
No Shepard Without Vakarian (unhealthy): Toxic one-sided dependence on Shepard's side or toxic co-dependency
Absolutely Not: This dynamic does not exist between your Shepard and Garrus
It's more of a No Vakarian Without Shepard situation actually: Also one-sided dependence, but on Garrus' side this time
#bottom one i think#theyre friends . but i think garrus is more dependant on her than she’s ever been on him#caine could survive without garrus vakarian garrus could not survive without caine#also their ideologies completely split from one another around me2 and garrus certainly feels a way about it i think#when i first played i had them just be besties but while i think thats not not right i also think. theyre more interesting if theyre mor#complicated. i think they drift away from each other Heavily after me3#very different ideas of how to handle things very different beliefs on where their world should go now. only one of them consistently#willing to admit to how much they differ. is the vibe i think#polls#mass effect#OC: Caine Shepard

i love the confrontation between the virmire survivor and shepard on horizon bc it has that tasty interpersonal conflict i loveeeee however. i do wish some of shepard's responses could have been a bit more emotionally intelligent 👍
#GOD YEAH#caine is not the most emotionally intelligent girl in the world (a couple decades of repression will do that to you)#but at the very least she’d be much more. understanding? than i feel the scene lets her be#caine justifies the means by the ends in me2 irt cerberus but. she understands that is what she is doing. if that makes sense#knowingly doing a wrong under the justification the outcome is right but still knowing others will judge it and have the right to. etc etc#and anyway i think she respects kaidan’s integrity in that scene even if they disagree on this#so it is always frustrating to go through that scene#OC: Caine Shepard#mass effect#i think it is part of the fact me2 feels like it has specific ways it wants ur shepard to feel about cerberus#that are ime. Not as much The Defaults as the game thinks
