History is one of the most fascinating subjects to study. It's already happened. No one can speculate on an outcome of a certain action because it's already happened. Obviously, while learning a bit of history that we might be unaware of, we can speculate on a possible outcome prior to reading about it.
History is also cold. It can't be altered by a feeling or an emotional response. What's done is done. It can evoke an emotional response to an event that had previously happened and/or was unknown. However, that response cannot alter the event that happened.
In looking back, aka hindsight, we can learn a lot. It should humble us. The majority of modern day societies would not be where they are without the actions of their fore-bearers.
While we may find inequities in modern society, particularly western society, we are able to do so because of the actions and events that transpired to bring us to the present day.
It is pure privilege that we in western have the freedom to speak out against inequities that we see. Many societies around the world do not have that privilege. We are the exception, not the rule.
When we study history from a purely factual perspective, we can see just how rare our current society is.
We may cry 'colonialism' or 'imperialism' all we want. But the freedom to do so is directly linked to the decisions and events that can be attributed to said colonialism.
And if we want to take the argument against 'colonialism', or this irrational ideology of somehow "undoing colonialism', we must first recognize that every civilization that has ever existed has been guilty of conquering and colonizing another. The 'race' of that civilization is irrelevant. It's happened on every populated continent since the dawn of human civilization.
History doesn't care about our feelings. It already happened. It's how we move forward that matters.
