They look into each other's eyes, and he can barely remember how it was before. Before the sturdy hands and the soft kisses. Before he saw the endless sky in that longing gaze.

He can barely remember, so maybe it doesn't matter.

Tang of gunpowder — glint of a minecart among wildflowers. Martyn laughing in the treetops. “Come this way!” Ren would have died smiling. Shut his eyes, filled his mind with Martyn’s mouth and Martyn’s kiss and regretted nothing. But no explosion — no bright, sudden end. Only a distant giggle, pine boughs swaying as Martyn scampered away. Sneaky little bugger. On the same side, still, always.
