Something I see a lot of on both the AO3 and fanfiction subreddits in relation to deleted fics is:
“Oh, author of my all-time favourite fic deleted it out of the blue. They were apparently upset/unmotivated/etc because they rarely received engagement. Anybody save a copy?”
My first question is always: “Did you ever express to this author that this fic was “your all-time favourite”?”
I never get an answer, but I have the distinct impression that, no, they didn’t.
✨The silent reader era needs to die. ✨
A lot of authors are fragile creatures that do best when they know people are reading their work. Feed the motivation and leave even a short comment or emoji. I’m not saying you have to write an essay.
You don’t have to consume the free content provided to you at a record pace. You can savour it.
You don’t have to leave a comment, true.
The author also doesn’t have to keep posting to crickets.
