Every time I think about Zuko and Katara doing the fake dating trope in canon. I always laugh because no one would question it. In fact, it would be the most believable thing in the world. The only question people would have is, “What took you so long?”

But Zuko and Katara are so oblivious to each other's feelings that they don’t recognize that the only ones acting weird are themselves. They constantly try to overcompensate and make things more “believable.”

Okay, but what if we add that during Aang’s suspicions about having something hidden from him, Sokka, Katara, and Zuko decide the best thing to do is to distract him from the truth by saying the secret is that Katara and Zuko are dating?

Prompt: Katara kills Yon Rah in Southern Riders but the both decide not to tell Aang, Katara wants to protect his innocence and is worried he'll see her differently and she knows he won't be supporting and Zuko goes along because it was her own private revenge quest and he was just tagging along so it's her decision not his and he'll respect that (and also because he doesn't think Aang can handle seeing Katara as a person with her own set of morals that differ from his)

Sharing this secret brings them closer together and they end up talking a lot just the two of them together in the beach house late at night often

Eventually Katara tells her brother who has mixed feelings about it because just thinking about his mother is difficult for him but he is supporting and promises he won't tell Aang but by this point Aang knows they are hiding something from him and doesn't like it, he starts getting jealous but they successfully distract him with training and war plans

After the war is over Katara tells her dad who approves and is openly proud of her for it, Aang hears and can't understand, he corners her alone and tries to tell her this goes against everything the monks taught him but it comes off as so balantly patronising that Zuko, who was just passing by feels like he has to intervene and defend her

It's time to select your top 31 prompts for Zutara Month!

I believe he would’ve joined. But I also think it wouldn’t have been as impactful. If Katara healed his scar, Zuko would feel a sense of honor-bound obligation towards her and, by extension, the Gaang, making his choice less one of full-hearted conviction and recognition of his nation's cruelty and the lessons Iroh taught him but one of obligation to repay what Katara gave him.

If he were to return to the fire nation without his scar, he most likely would never have been let back home because that scar was given to him by Ozai, and erasing it is a defiance of the Fire Lord, which would be treason.

With that said, there are many ways that this could be done well and still have the same impact but done in different ways. One way is that he joins them; they go to the Fire Nation, and while he’s still conflicted, he becomes solidified in his decision and embraces his destiny once he sees how his people are treated under his father's rule.

For example, if he were to act as Aang’s (“Kuzon’s”) father with Katara in “the headband” and see for himself the propaganda that is fed to children, he would be forced to face the reality of his nation's brainwashing and confront that he was a victim of that same skewed education as well.

As for fic recommendations, I don’t have many specifically on the top of my head that fit this exact narrative. But if you want some “Zuko joins the Gaang early” content, I highly recommend the @emletish-fish “Worst Prisoner” series.

If Katara had healed Zuko’s scar, do you think that Zuko would have joined them earlier? Do you think he still would’ve betrayed her? Why or why not? I’m genuinely curious what y’all think.
