Prince William reveals new arrivals in birthday portrait taken by Kate It’s one of the most unguarded and down to earth photos we’ve seen of the British heir-to-the-throne, Prince William. So it’s perhaps no surprise to hear that the person responsible for the new birthday portrait of the Prince of Wales is his wife, Kate. Catherine, Princess of Wales took the photo of the father-of-three, who turns 43 today, surrounded by their new puppies at their home in Windsor earlier this month. Mum’s dilemma over splitting cost of child’s birthday party with ex after separation | Money Manners Money Manners is 9honey Money’s weekly column that deals with money etiquette matters that can be the cause of many an awkward encounter. Submit your Money Manners questions to Jo Abi at [email protected] This week’s question comes from a 9honey reader and deals with a common co-parenting challenge following divorce. Dilemma: “How do I split my daughter’s birthday costs with my ex?’ A mum is having a financial dilemma as her daughter’s milestone birthday approaches. (Getty Images/iStockphoto) My daughter is turning 16 in a couple of months and I want to try and make it really special for her. Her dad and I divorced a few years ago and we’ve both re-partnered. We haven’t always gotten along, but lately we’ve been trying harder to come together for our kids. I want to invite him and his new partner to a party I am hosting for our daughter in the home I just moved into with my new partner. I am hoping my ex and I can split the costs and come together for the kids. Her dad and I divorced a few years ago and we’ve both re-partnered. (Getty Images/iStockphoto) This feels like the right thing to do, but one of my friends said we should host separate parties instead, and that it will be ‘weird’ and ‘awkward’. I’m also not sure how to split the costs. Any advice? Advice: ‘You might need to compromise’ Couple’s therapist Melissa Ferrari has weight in on this one for 9honey Money. She explained it’s important to “consider what is fair and just for you both”. “It’s great that you and your ex-partner are trying harder for your kids,” Ferrari said. “These types of situations are difficult to deal with after a divorce. One approach that may be helpful is to consider what is fair and just for both of you. “If you want your ex-partner to pay for half of the birthday party, you may need to make him and his partner co-hosts. “Otherwise, it may be best to just invite them and pay for it yourself. ‘What have I done?’ Dad close to tears over son’s birthday cake “To help him feel like he has a role in the decision-making process, present him with both scenarios and let him choose.” “Your friend is right that it may be weird and awkward, but it’s important to model maturity for your children,” Ferrari continued. “If you can successfully pull this off with respect and goodwill, you’ll show your child that negotiation is possible through collaboration, fairness, and respect. Ferrari has advised the former couple to work together for the sake of their daughter. (Getty) “She also gets to experience her birthday party with both parents present. “I also think consulting with your daughter would be useful so that she feels she has some input, too.” The information provided on this website is general in nature only and does not constitute personal financial advice. Kmart finds: The $9 Kmart hack professional cleaner uses to make dusting the entire home easier Professional cleaner Sara Allan has revealed her top three dusters for cleaning the home after using them on the job over the years. The Housekeeping Heroes NSW owner is a fan of the $5.98 Mr Clean microfibre duster and the $5.49 All Set cobweb extension broom from Bunnings. But if she was to recommend just one to have at home it would be a $9 Kmart purchase. Watch the video above. READ MORE: The $12 Bunnings buy cleaner swears by for transforming filthy grout Sara Allen from Housekeeping Heroes recommends Kmart’s two-in-one mop head for dusting. (TikTok/@housekeepingheroesnsw) “It would definitely be the Kmart two-in-one mop head attachment for a couple of reasons; it’s very cost effective at $4 for the extendable telescopic pole and $5 for the two-in-one mop head, so for $9 it really is a bargain and will last a very long time – I have had mine for about five years and still in perfect condition,” she tells 9honey Living. “The microfibre head is easy to remove and clean in the washing machine, the telescopic pole extends and is easy to clean high reach areas without having to use a step ladder,” Allan adds. 15 household items you should clean more regularly “Extremely easy to use to dust all ceiling crevices, fans, exhausts and traps dust/buildup with ease. The flat side can be used to effectively dust and clean skirting boards and ceiling crevices as the user can simply spray a multipurpose solution directly onto the pad and press up against a ceiling crevice, skirting board or wall.” READ MORE: Common toilet paper habit causing ‘hidden mould’ This mop head is from Kmart’s mix and match click range for which other attachments are available. (Kmart) These kinds of areas might not be as noticeable to the naked eye as dust on coffee tables and shelves but they do build up a lot of dust so they require regular cleaning. Allan recommends cleaning walls every three months while ceiling fans, skirting boards and ceiling crevices should be done fortnightly. There is one exception, though, with skirting boards and ceiling crevices needing a weekly clean for anyone who “lives in an area where a lot of construction work is happening”. READ MORE: Why clean clothes start stinking 10 minutes into wearing them Once you’ve finished your cleaning session with the Kmart two-in-one mop head you will need to clean it. Allan recommends removing it and putting it in the washing machine on a standard cycle. It’s the same cleaning process for the second of her other favourite dusters, the Mr Clean microfibre duster. For the third duster, the cobweb broom, you can simply hose down the bristles when finished and set aside to dry thoroughly. For a daily dose of 9honey, subscribe to our newsletter here. Unable to display TikTok on this browser Though the Kmart mop head can be used for ceiling fans, Allen says the cobweb broom can actually be more useful for this task. “This one works extremely well for fan blades as we simply shape it to the specific fan blade we are trying to clean, and it cleans all four sides of a fan blade in one simple back and forth motion,” she says. READ MORE: Which Hoka shoe is right for you? This Bunnings cobweb broom is also good for dusting ceiling fans. (Bunnings) As for dusting surfaces like shelves, Allan uses a wet microfibre cloth to wipe the surface followed by a dry microfibre cloth “to go over the surface a second time to ensure the surface is cleaned and dust free”. To reduce the amount of dust in the home she advised vacuuming daily, limiting clutter, creating a weekly and fortnightly cleaning routine, cleaning air conditioner filters every two weeks and dusting surfaces from top to bottom. Conservative activist Charlie Kirk tells 14-year-old girl her main reason for university should be to ‘find a husband’ Conservative activist Charlie Kirk has sparked outrage after telling a room of young women that their main reason for attending university should be to find a husband. The founder of Turning Point USA was taking questions at his recent Young Women’s Leadership Summit in Dallas, Texas, when a 14-year-old high school student asked for his advice on her future university plans. “What would you say the pros and cons are [about attending university] because I’m interested in political journalism. What would your advice be?” she asked Kirk. Watch the video above. Charlie Kirk has sparked outrage after telling a room of young women that their main reason for attending university should be to find a husband. (Getty) READ MORE: Before her daughter’s death, Vicky made a heartfelt plea. The princess listened Instead of responding to the student’s question, Kirk, who briefly attended a community college before dropping out, addressed all the young women in the crowd as he advocated for the “MRS degree”. “Let me also speak to some of the young ladies here in high school,” he began. “Interestingly, I think there is an argument to bring back the MRS degree,” he continued which evoked some laughter among the crowd. The concept of the ‘MRS degree’ refers to going to university for the express purpose of finding an educated man to marry. READ MORE: Detail in mum’s 16-week pregnancy scan set off alarm bells Charlie Kirk, who never graduated college, responded by advocating for the “MRS degree”. (X/ @peltzmadeline) “No, seriously,” he continued. ”And just be clear – that’s why you’re going to college, right? “Don’t lie to yourself like, ‘Oh I’m going, I’m studying sociology’. No you’re not, that’s not why you’re here and that’s OK, actually.” Kirk continued to shock with his comments, adding: “College is a scam, but if you’re going to find your life partner that’s actually a really good reason to go to college. “You have a bunch of people that are single, they’re at the prime of their… let’s just say attractiveness, the dating pool is as robust as you’ll ever find and they all live together over a four-year period. “You don’t get much better than that OK, it doesn’t get better after college.” For a daily dose of 9honey, subscribe to our newsletter here. He continued by nonchalantly discouraging a young woman’s education. “That actually was the reason why a lot of women went to college in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, and it worked,” he said. Kirk did not address the young woman’s aspirations to pursue political journalism. He also did not tout the benefit for men to go to university to find a wife or obtain a ‘MR degree’. READ MORE: Woolworths quietly changes digital checkout option Inside the young women’s leadership event. (X/ @peltzmadeline) Vision of Kirk’s commentary at the event for conservative young women has circled around the internet, sparking outrage among many. American author and attorney Jill Filipovic shared the clip to her X account. “This poor girl. She asks Charlie Kirk about her goal to be a political journalist and her tells her to get an Mrs degree,” she wrote alongside it. ”Awful… just awful,” one person added about Kirk’s sentiment in a social media comment. “Women aren’t signing up for debt and getting science and math degrees to play 1950s housewife. Let’s aim a little higher than an ‘MRS degree’,” said another. “Mr. Kirk thinks women are lesser than men,” another critic wrote on social media. Empty perfume bottle in drawers, wardrobe is the hack that’ll keep your clothes smelling fresh Finishing up the last dregs of your favourite perfume can be devastating, but there is a way to hold on to the scent for a little longer – as well as the bottle that’s too pretty to throw away. One woman has uncovered a no-effort hack that costs nothing that she learnt from her mother, leaving her clothes smelling heavenly. Watch the video above READ MORE: Aussies warned to stock up as common cooking ingredient faces global shortage She finally threw away her stash. (Facebook/Georgie Hopkinson) Posting to a Facebook group, she shared, “My late mother taught me to put empty perfume bottles in my underwear drawer, so my undies would smell nice! Today I had a clear out and put 18 bottles in the recycling!” Alongside it she shared a picture of her bag filled with empty bottles of the perfume Ghost. The post garnered hundreds of comments, many of which shared similar advice. “I put soap in a sock in mine. And in the wardrobe too,” said one. “I always used wax from wax melts after I changed it to a new wax I put the heart in a piece of wax in the drawer,” another added. “My mum always had perfume samples from magazines in her underwear drawer. I think they are hard to find now adays,” one shared. READ MORE: ‘A lie can’t last forever’: Meghan’s brutal swipe at royal family “My nannie used to have a bar of soap in hers. It was a teddy bear soap she got when she was younger her self (1940’s) When she passed I kept it as a memory of her and it lives in my underwear drawer still,” another admitted. “I have satchels of lavender and other herbs I keep in my clothing drawers!” one added, drawing on the ’90s trend of putting potpourri inside little bags to keep inside drawers. Some were concerned about the effects of the chemicals in such close quarters to clothes and especially undergarments. “Isn’t this awful for your lady bits?” questioned one. “This is a good way to get some infections ma’am,” another added. “I wish I could do this but I’d for sure get a UTI,” one said. For a daily dose of 9honey, subscribe to our newsletter here. The best bathroom cleaning hacks that actually work “Bra drawer? Sure! But not the undies…keep it clean ladies!” another said. Others were just amazed she has been able to get through that many perfume bottles in the first place. “I don’t think I’ve even gone through 10 perfumes in my entire life. And I’m 50. This is impressive,” said one. “I’m afraid to ask how many sprays you apply every day,” another added. “I honestly don’t think I’ve ever finished a bottle of perfume and I’ve never thought about that until this exact minute,” one remarked. It’s a no effort and no spend hack. (Getty) If there is a scent you’re still using but also want to replicate in your wardrobe, you can always take advice from Aussie TikToker Renee, who sprayed her favourite perfume onto an adhesive felt pad and stuck them into her drawers and wardrobes for the smell to permeate. This hacks also works for other closed areas such as cars, with one commenter sharing, “my aunt taught us to put a high end hand soap in your car and it smells amazing and lasts forever! Cat eye boogers: Why felines get eye gunk and how to clean it | Explainer Cat owners may find they have a lot of things in common with their beloved pets – such as a love for lazing around and being waited on hand and foot. But one of the more unusual similarities cats share with their humans is one you barely think of: eye boogers. Watch the video above READ MORE: ‘Making biscuits’: What your cat is really trying to say when they sink their claws into you One unusual point in common unites yourself and your cat. (Getty) Just like their humans, cats are often the victim of crusties by their eyes. Felines naturally emit liquid from their eyes that ends up drying as crust in the corners of their eyes. “Cat eye boogers are a mixture of dried tears and mucus that accumulates in the corner of the eye. They are the same as human eye boogers that may be present in the morning,” Dr. Ray Spragley, a veterinarian at Zen Dog Vet told Yahoo. READ MORE: Why does my cat flop in front of me? Expert explains what the adorable moment really means What is different about a cat’s crusties is they often have pigment in them, “which causes their eye boogers to be darker than the ones humans have.” It’s quite ordinary for cats to develop eye boogers near their tear ducts, and since they are self-grooming they can often clean it from their eyes themselves. Sometimes they can’t get everything out, and in this case it is fine to clean them for your cat by wetting a washcloth, cotton pad or tissue with warm water and wiping down their face. Be sure to avoid the actual eye, as a scratch can cause a corneal ulceration. READ MORE: After learning why my dog sleeps on my pillows, I’ll never be able to look at him the same Sometimes cats need a bit of help. (Getty) If your cat isn’t the type to take being helped lying down and will most definitely scratch you up, you could try having one person wrap your pet in a towel so all their limbs are tucked away so another can clean their (likely hissing) face. At times, cats’ eye boogers may be a sign of something wrong, with excessive or persistent discharge pointing to an underlying issue. For a daily dose of 9honey, subscribe to our newsletter here. The largest domestic cat breeds and how big they can get If you notice a lot of tears and your cat rubbing its eyes a lot or even a change in colour of the discharge, it may indicate your cat has allergies, conjunctivitis, a feline upper respiratory infection, or even dry eye if there is not enough moisture – as well as even more serious ailments. It is advised that you take your cat to the vet if you are seeing a persistent issue for them to find the cause and give a proper diagnosis. Two words to ask yourself to make decluttering clothes easier Ever looked at your wardrobe and become instantly overwhelmed? Even when you know it’s time to cut down on your clothes, how do you decide which pieces to actually cull and won’t regret saying goodbye to months down the track? After all, you don’t need a jacket you never wear taking up a hanger. READ MORE: ‘Most beautiful surprise’: Buddy and Jesinta Franklin’s baby joy Ask yourself two words to make decluttering easier. (Getty) Well, there’s two words to ask yourself that could make decluttering much easier. It’s called the “ifs and buts” rule. According to Paul Gray, marketing director at clothing retailer Chums, it’s a method to start the decluttering process when you’re feeling overwhelmed. All you have to do is hold up an item from your wardrobe and ask yourself why you no longer want it, using “if” and “but” to determine what you don’t like. Or perhaps, you’d wear a pair of shoes more if they didn’t have as high a heel. For another easy decluttering trick, all you need is a hanger. Put all your clothes on a hanger and then turn the hangers backwards in your wardrobe. Check back in a few months later and if they’re still backwards, you’ll be able tell which clothing pieces you don’t get much wear out of. Decluttering tips and hacks to make it quick and easy “Those backwards hangers tell the story!” one TikToker sharing the hack says. Professional organiser Kayleen Kelly suggests a three-second rule for decluttering. Just pick up a clothing item, decide if you want to keep it, and immediately move to a yes or no pile. ‘Grotesque’: JFK. Jr’s nephew speaks out on Ryan Murphy’s upcoming biopic series American Love Story A member of the Kennedy family has spoken out about Ryan Murphy’s upcoming TV series, American Love Story. The show is set to tell the tragic love story of the late John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bassette-Kennedy, but according to JFK Jr.’s nephew, Jack Schlossberg, he claimed the family were not consulted regarding the show’s creation. Schlossberg then explained that in New York state, the right to privacy “doesn’t survive death” meaning that he and his family do not have the right to control JFK Jr.’s name, image or likeness. “For that matter, he’s considered a public figure, so there’s not much we can do,” he added. Schlossberg shared a video to his Instagram story detailing the situation. (Instagram/jackuno) “I hope those making these shows about him take seriously what he stood for in his life, all that he achieved in it. And that they donate some of the profits [that] they’re making. “For the record, I think admiration for my Uncle John is great. What I don’t think is great is profiting off of it in a grotesque way.” Jackie Kennedy: Her life through the years 9honey has reached out to Ryan Murphy for comment, in relation to this story. Sophie met Prince Edward in 1987 while working at Capitol Radio; she was 22 and he was 23. At the time, Edward was dating a friend of Sophie’s. They met up again six years later at a tennis charity event, and this time both were single. Sophie and Edward got along famously and soon after they began secretly dating. Royal author Ingrid Seward, who wrote the book, Prince Edward, says the couple almost broke up a year into their relationship after Edward got cold feet, realising this was a serious relationship that could lead to marriage. They managed to get back on track and spent the next few years getting to know each other better before taking the next step. Edward proposed an engagement ring featuring a two-carat oval diamond made by Asprey and Garrard, worth £105,000 (AUD$184,398). Sophie met Prince Edward in 1987 while working at Capitol Radio. Influencer Laura Henshaw warns about ‘damaging’ online movement It’s an old story, but in new packaging: are some “traditional” ideas just thinly veiled ways to keep women in their place? We’re seeing more content on social media being sold as “self-improvement” and “inspirational”, but beneath the surface, we’re looking at a far more damaging, restrictive script. Welcome to the manosphere. READ MORE: ‘Profound scars’: Sarah Ferguson opens up about mental health treatment Laura Henshaw is an advocate for women’s financial independence. (Supplied) In the latest episode of The Pay Off with Sylvia Jeffreys, Sylvia sat down with Laura Henshaw, the co-founder and highly successful businesswoman behind KIC. Laura came on to discuss her latest podcast mini-series, ‘Am I Equal?’, and give her view on women’s financial independence. Laura has been diving deep into the “manosphere” – a growing online space that’s pushing for a return to traditional gender roles, often disguised by ‘caring’ language and soft instrumental music. READ MORE: Which Hoka shoe is right for you? “Benevolent sexism is disguised as caring, loving, kindness, ‘I wanna take care of you’. But it’s actually taking agency away from women within a relationship and also belittling the view of them”, Laura explains. “When they spoke about women and the role of their partner, it was basically just to make sure they could pursue their dreams and be there for them at home. But there was nothing about women chasing our dreams, right?” Perhaps this ‘old story, but new packaging’ looks like ‘Freedom Barbie’… she prioritises domesticity, is emotionally available for men’s comfort, and doesn’t strive for independent careers. To listen to Episode Sixteen of The Pay Off with Sylvia Jeffreys, press play below or tap here – Episode Sixteen | Why A Man Is Not A Financial Plan With Laura Henshaw It’s a movement that is coinciding with the rise of the ‘tradwife’ trend on social media. You’ve probably seen the aesthetically pleasing videos: women baking artisanal bread, tending to home gardens, and generally presenting an idyllic, almost retro, vision of domesticity. While there’s nothing wrong with choosing to be a stay-at-home parent – a necessary choice for many families – the concern, as Laura talks about, is when this structure becomes prescriptive, pushing women to “opt out of power structures” and sacrifice their financial independence and freedom. Steph Claire Smith and Laura Henshaw created KIC together. Nostalgia Trip: What happened to the faces we grew up with? In this episode, Laura also excitedly shares parts of her pregnancy journey, how KIC grew into the empire it is and her advice for anyone looking to start a business.
