Fall Hair Hack: Protective Styling
East coast temperatures are dropping, and wind speeds are picking up. You wouldn’t walk outside without a jacket, so you shouldn’t leave your hair bare either! TeamTresse is here to help you ladies save your beautiful locks, and learn more about the benefits of protective styling.
Tumblr media
A protective style is a hairstyle that keeps the length of your hair protected from exposure to the environment. It tucks your ends away, which helps reduce breakage and retain length. Braids, twists, updos, weaves, and wigs are some examples of styles that shelter your natural hair from the elements.
Protective styling comes with several benefits. For one, you won’t have to style your hair everyday. The low-maintenance saves you time, and also reduces tugging and breakage caused by daily hair routines. The less breakage your hair has, the more length you retain. This key factor leads to healthy hair growth.
Tumblr media
In the Fall, it’s absolutely necessary to wear your hair up or in a protective style. The friction from hair rubbing against scarves and coarse sweater material can cause additional breakage, and the colder weather sucks out the hair’s natural moisture. If you end up trying protective styles this fall, make sure you take care of your natural hair. Have a look at these tips for maintaining healthy hair underneath your protective style!
1) Keep your scalp clean. Cleanse at least once every 2 weeks (take into account how much you sweat, if you get excess buildup, or have an itchy scalp. In-between washes, you can also use a little witch hazel or toner to refresh your scalp. Simply spritza small amount of the witch hazel/toner onto a cotton pad and wipe it along your scalp.
2) Use a leave-in conditioner or oil on your scalp to keep it moisturized. Avoid products that can build up, like silicones and waxes. Instead, look for lighter ingredients, like jojoba or sweet almond oil and water based moisterizers.
3) Don’t forget to protect your style at night! Even though your natural hair is protected, you don’t want to lose moisture. Leaving your hair unprotected can also leave your edges dry and messy in the morning. Tie up your style in a satin scarf, and/or use a satin pillowcase.
4) Avoid getting your braids done too tight, and don’t constantly wear tight updos like buns or ponytails. These factors may lead to traction alopecia: a form of hair-loss caused by a pulling force applied to the hair. To keep your edges lush and thriving, tell your stylist to loosen up the tension, and alternate days between wearing your hair up and down.
You can thank us after you take down your style and reveal sexy, healthy hair!

Sunscreens Made with Melanin in Mind
Tumblr media
It is a well-known myth that people of color do not need sunscreen, but while we absolutely do need protection from the sun, there is a drawback. Many sunscreens leave a white layer that is more noticeable on dark skin, leaving our skin looking chalky. We know that the hunt for a good sunscreen can be frustrating, and since we are well into summer, we’ve found a few companies that carry sunscreens to guard you from sun damage without dulling your melanin’s glow at the same time.
UNSUN Tinted Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30
Tumblr media
Unsun is a lightweight sunscreen for your face with all naturally derived ingredients. It contains moisturizers like shea butter and coconut oil, which are two ingredients that our skin absolutely loves, and it also has a mineral tint that can blend with many different skin tones. Due to the moisturizing and tint purposes, this sunscreen makes perfect for underneath your makeup application. They also offer sun protectant hand cream and lip tints. This retails for $29 on unsuncosmetics.com
                                        Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30
Tumblr media
Here’s a really cool black-owned company named Black Girl Sunscreen, and as you can tell by the name this was made specifically for us women of color. They use all natural ingredients and it dries clear, so no worries about ashy looking skin. What makes this sunscreen unique is that it even claims to be melanin reinforcing, so you get a sun shield and glowing skin all in one.  blackgirlsunscreen.com $18.99.
                           Palmer’s Eventone Suncare Sunscreen Stick
Tumblr media
We all know about Palmer’s cocoa butter, but they also have sunscreens as well. They use their same cocoa butter formula to not only protect your skin, but also moisturize it. It is water resistant, has SPF 50, and is a bang for you buck. You can get one at any drugstore for around $10 or on palmers.com for $6.99 before shipping. As it’s packaging states, it’s small and portable size makes it ideal for your face, lips, and ears.
Glossier Invisible Shield Sunscreen SPF 35
Tumblr media
Glossier is all about not altering your beautiful features, but instead enhancing them, and they make sure that they create products that everyone can use. Their water gel formulated sunscreen is what makes this product useful for all skin tones and everyday use. There are no drying alcohol ingredients and Glossier states no greasy residue is left behind either. You can get this vegan, cruelty-free sunscreen for $25 glossier.com
ELF Stay Out & Play SPF 50
Tumblr media
ELF is known for their low priced makeup products, so of course we had to include their sunscreen. Priced at only $10, this sunscreen is formulated with a universal tint that works with all shades. Stay Out & Play is formulated to be sweat resistant, hence its name, and is breathable for those who are active. ELF is another brand mostly sold in drugstores but is also available through their website elfcosmetics.com

Ready, Set, Wash n’ Go!
Tumblr media
The wash n’ go is a go-to style for many curlies and is the perfect summer style. Despite it’s name, the wash n’ go is anything but that!  You start with a wash and at the end you can go... but there are alot of steps in between. Like any style, the outcome of your wash n’ go depends on your hair texture, hair health, and the products used.
In this blog post TresseNoire veteran stylist Jasmine walks us through the key steps to the perfect wash n’ go and we feature a couple of product systems designed to give you the perfect wash n’ go.
STEP BY STEP WASH N’ GO with Jasmine
Tumblr media
STEP 1. Start off with freshly cleansed hair.  Your hair should be dripping wet.
STEP 2. Detangle your hair using large tooth comb.
STEP 3. Apply preferred leave in conditioner and styling agent over your entire head. Jasmine loves the KeraCare styling gel. In small sections, work the styling product into your hair using a small comb or using your fingers as a comb.
STEP 4. After completely working in the product shake your head up and down and from left to right. Use your fingers to guide the hair in the direction you want (e.g. toward your face, away from your face, with a side part etc.)
STEP 5. Use a hair dryer or diffuser to remove some of the moisture then GO!
PRODUCT SYSTEMS
As you probably know, products are critical to achieving the perfect wash n’ go.  For curlies with kinky, coily, low porosity hair, finding the right product combination is key to achieving curl definition, but this can be a challenge that drains your time and your wallet.  Never fear- there are product systems designed to help make the process easier.
CURL DEFINITION
This product system is “a Patent Pending Hair Care System Of Hand-Crafted Natural Hair Care Products Specifically Designed To Build Manageability And Curl Definition In Naturally Kinky, Coily & Tightly Curled Hair, As Well As Enhance Curl Definition In Curly Hair With The Added Benefit Of A Long Lasting Hold That Lasts An Average of 2 Weeks.”
Tumblr media
NATURALICIOUS
The Hello Gorgeous Hair Care System is the “only sulfate, paraben, mineral oil, petroleum, gluten, and cruelty-free line of products that actually smashes your hair care routine into smithereens!” Included in the system is a cleanser, moisturizer and hot oil frizz fighter.
