Their’s was a game of distinct rules. There were guidelines how it would mostly go and go it always went. Carmen tended to only put up with him for so long, it just depended on the climate of the conversation really. At least that was how Emmanuel saw it. Felt it. “My those are quite a lot of distinctions and clarifications. Could it not all just fall under time? It’s the common factor and really would keep your words curt. Off with their little extra gorgon heads, they’ll roll into a perfect little pile of placement and personhood and date. So place the person in the place and calendar or shared activity and that will be the time. I’m sure the White Rabbit would cooperate. He does love his ticks––always sucking blood! I suppose we shall see now won’t we dearest darling daisy squasher?” Watching her movements and the fire lit only for second Emmanuel waited just a second too long before responding. For that uncomfortable tension filled atmosphere to be settled in… “You were always the romantic with these things. Though you needn’t go to all that trouble for me. You could just hold your breath a bit and blow your brains out your nose into your best tea handkerchief. I think that would be quite…beautiful.”
“Oh, but it’s all about the details, dear dear Emmanuel. Or else how do you think we all come to be? And don’t tell me that’s when mommy and daddy love each other so much, like the smart little boy you are.” Her statements always shorter than his, there was only enough vagueness and confusion she could give to people. Words weren’t exactly how she played other people, unless she was unfocused, but when he was around. Especially not when he was. It was only incredible how they happened to hold such conversations, by her allowances most of the times. Since she’d much rather see him roll away the same way his Mother did to everyone for living. But she happened to indulge herself, it was almost thrilling to so freely spit her words in his direction. And as he broke the silence, Carmen couldn’t help but slightly narrow her eyes at his form and slowly blow the smoke out in his direction, not really bothering to check if she was actually doing what he wanted her to do, before raising an eyebrow. “Do I still keep my so romantic touch? Hopefully I have not forgotten.”

wonderland english dictionary? she certainly wasn’t familiar with that. “so unbirthdays don’t exist then. people are born every single day, it’s always someone’s birthday, somewhere.” she didn’t mean to sound so matter-of-fact, but her tone strayed in that direction anyways. “no, it’s not.” maeve informed, crossing her arms across her chest. there was something suspicious about this girl, and she wasn’t a fan of it. “i don’t see why you need this information, but no.” maeve is willing to give carmen mere ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers, but she wouldn’t get anymore out of her.
carmen hummed lowly, technically the other wasn’t wrong, but technically she wasn’t right either. “touché” the wonderlander shrugged, there was no point in actually attempting to explain, especially when she was waiting for the next response, one she was certainly sure of. and when she got the answer she was looking for, her attention fully went to the girl she was talking to, almost like realizing she was there even if she had been aware they had been talking for a couple of minutes now. “then happy unbirthday.” she drew out in an almost mocking tone as a smirk grew on her face, as out of nowhere two figures-- resembling the Mad Hatter and March Hare, as good as she could remember them anyway-- came jumping around in their typical fashion and around maeve as if they were there. all an illusion easily pulled off by the wonderlander, but sounding, looking and feeling completely real. and just as they had come, they disappeared.

A whisper of air released between his teeth, Carmen has always been the right sort of adversary. The distinct lack of empathy towards him was always a relief. Compared to otherRiddle inclinations, hers was what he was looking for. The perfect source. “Oh so do you prefer forward encounters then? Back to back we’ll face each other? Pray do tell more. Though I must say I don’t mind having the last word.” Checking his phone at the mention of it he responded without looking at Carmen though he was hyper aware of every movement. “Here there everywhere around up down sideways all sorts of directions really. My entrance is always quite a big boom though––especially for you I know.”
It was almost like he enjoyed the obvious dislike she had for him, it was odd. But as much as she would’ve hated to admit, they both were wonderlanders so it still made sense. And she paid no mind in actually feeding him with apathy. “It’ll depend. It’s all about time, day, place, person, and everything in between. And I am not surprised you don’t mind, after all, when are you ever out of any word?” Exhausting, almost. Eyes never straying away from him, even if he did, as she pulled a cigarette and lit it up. “The only big boom you could possibly have on me, is the one you’d have if you strapped yourself to a rocket and flew through the sky and space straight to the moon.”

athena: if you’d tried and failed, i’d understand, but you didn’t even try.
carmen: so i didn’t even fail. and i don’t see you giving me credit for that.

“It’s hard to describe really and I’m already the weird girl so I think its best we just leave it at whispers.” Ollie admitted in a small voice. The last thing she wanted to explain was how prominent everyone in the school’s thoughts were and how loud the world around her could be if she wasn’t focusing on drowning it all out. “Uh… alright… then yeah, I guess I’m coming in?”
“weird girl,” carmen hummed with certain amusement, and then briefly pointed at herself. “did you know i’m both literally and figuratively insane? clinically too now that i think of it.” she smirked almost as if she was proud of her title-- alright maybe she was, at least most of the times when her insanity wasn’t getting in her own way. “so try me and enlighten me, weird girl.” the wonderlander pressed before she looked at her for a rather long time. “alright, but you’re actually a bit too early, i don’t know what those whispers told you.

“i wouldn’t have asked if i had the answers.” maeve was the one who toyed with others. she rarely admitted not knowing something, and she definitely didn’t enjoy being pressed on the matter. “because person makes sense. if someone like hitler was never born, that’d have a big impact on the world, wouldn’t it? i suppose time makes sense as well, but i don’t see why it matters if it’s rainy or sunny or what season it is.”
that definitely wasn’t a fun answer, nor creative if someone asked her. “unbirthday-- taken from the Wonderland English Dictionary-- a day with no birthdays in it.” vague definition itself, not like she cared, the other was no wonderlander so it wouldn't really matter. and then she tilted her head to the side and pointedly asked her. “is today your birthday?” carmen asked, “i see your point, there probably would be a lot of changes in every single world and land had some people never be born, and i suppose some birthdays do not wish to be celebrated. and i might answer that other specifics questions, but first-- do you enjoy your birthday yourself?”

calder made a noise of agreement, nodding along. “so do you?” he finally questioned, glancing up at her. “feel special in your miserable glory?” calder clarified.
“i always feel special, and i’m always in an infinite state of misery and glory.” carmen grinned, almost proudly and as if she was only telling a joke and playing games as she always did, even if it was probably one of the most truthful statements she’s ever told. especially to calder. “so of course i feel special in my miserable glory-- do you feel special in that state, thorson?”

looking back it, samara had never really had her birthday celebrated. not in foster homes, not with edna. she had to make the most of her birthday by herself. she was lucky she even knew the actual date. ❝ it’s important to me. ❞ it was the one real thing samara knew about herself. ❝ but just because it’s important to me doesn’t make it important, ❞ she continued with a shrug.
“important to you.” carmen repeated with a bit of a hum. it was almost.. natural. that every person thought of their birthdays as important. she’d learned that. “so important but not important both at the same time. so what do you do with your unimportantly important birthday?”

this whole thing was ridiculous, that’s exactly why she had barely spent any time whatsover with the robot thing. but jaxon had to be off doing god know’s what, so there she was caring for it. more like... not fully neglecting it. she had bothered to take it with her, right? even if it was only lying on the grass, as she sat next to it smoking and with earphones in. completely ignoring the crying. “you said something?” she asked, pulling an earphone out as it allowed the loud music to freely disperse. only then noticing the crying robot, merely looking down at it. “if its about this-- yeah, it will shut up on its own.”
open ;
wesley had finally gotten his baby — robot baby — to stop crying and he settled her — it? — into the carrier the school had provided him. peace at last….until another baby started crying nearby. that wasn’t his, right? it couldn’t be his, he’d just fed and burped her. if it was an actual baby crying, he wouldn’t be that dick that got upset about it. however, considering this crying beast was non-sentient… “please deal with that crying. feed it, burp it, something.”

"mine prefers the freezer. i’m surprised yours hasn’t grown a pair of horns and tail, and its already making people’s lives miserable.” carmen snorted in amusement, freely walking his way with no baby in sight. “and i do wonder who was dumb enough to leave you with that toy all by yourself.”
one foot on the robotic baby, dmitri’s attention was on his phone, as he kept his heel on the belly of the baby- which lay on the floor, wailing. dmitri’s disinterest was clear and evident as ever, as he leaned against the wall, openly smoking as the baby continued crying, loudly. at the sound of approaching footsteps, dmitri glanced up from his phone. he at least had the grace to look slightly guilty. “it likes the floor. it’s closer to hell. he gets that from me.”

“h- hey.” the boy said as soon as he saw carmen, the greeting accompanied by a small wave of his hand. “that thing?” the puzzled expression on his face dissipated with the loud music once he managed to hear the faint cries of the baby looking creature they’ve been entrusted with. “oh…” quite frankly, the whole assignment felt more like a slow torture than a new way of learning. he could barely even take care of himself and to top it off, his partner in crime in this new ’learning experience’ (as the teacher called it) was no other than carmen. things weren’t looking too good. “i’m sure you are but… i really don’t want to get a bad grade on whatever this whole situation is supposed to be, so… where did you put that robot?”
carmen knew it wasn’t an actual baby, so the amounts of cares she gave about the whole thing were completely nonexistent. the only reason she hadn’t thrown it out of the window the moment it started crying was because-- well, there actually was no reason, and she was now wondering why she hadn’t done that in the first place. “oh, that’s why.” she mumbled to herself as jaxon talked about grades, not because she cared about hers, but because she’d much rather not hear a whining jaxon. “ugh, why do you have to ruin my fun? no, no-- i’m not telling you the details. you have to look for it. and you have to hurry or else it might die. can it even die?” she asked before shrugging it off and turning the music back on with a smirk. “game on.”

metal. that’s the only thing that could be heard blasting through the dorm as carmen had decided to put some music. “oh, space jello. good thing you’re here, that thing was driving me insane. can you imagine?” carmen smirked as if she had said the funniest joke, the moment jaxon walked in. pausing the music for a moment, and that’s when a muffled crying could be heard, but no baby was in sight. “try to hear that for hours, but louder. i’m doing us a favour.” @jaxonprcteus

Wesley stared, unblinking and dumbfounded, at Carmen. Slowly his nose crinkled in confusion and his lips turned down in a frown. “What the fuck is an unbirthday?”
Carmen could see how the gears seemed to turn inside Wesley’s brain. Typical Earth being behaviour, it used to be a more usual occurence when she first had gotten here, but still it never ceased to amuse her. Eyes squinting in wonder as her head tilted slightly at the side and her lips gently moved upwards. “Is it your birthday today, Wesley Ratcliffe?”

brie didn’t know what to say– she was terrified of this girl. she tried to be as complimentary as possible as they talked, though, admittedly, she was trying to come up with some sort of smooth getaway. “are… unbirthdays just any day that isn’t your birthday?” strange that they would be more important, but she dared not question it. “did you– um. at least have a good birthday? important or not?”
It was as if the fear literally came out of the girl’s pores, and the wonderlander wouldn’t lie, she loved it. however, she wouldn’t do anything about, at least not in that moment. so instead she continued as one usually would. “smart girl.” carmen smirked, before pointedly looking at her. “i don’t know, it was just another plain, old, boring day. what do you think?”

❝ i think birthdays are perfect JUST for the celebration. if for nothing else, it’s a free opportunity to get drunk as hell. i mean, any man offering free drinks is a good enough excuse, but then you can use the excuse of getting drunk for your birthday. but like you said, importance is bound to change depending on the person. ❞
“I believe celebration can happene anytime, anywhere. We could start celebrating right now, and men still would hand out free drinks. Same with getting drunk. Are ypu one of those people who’s birthdays is supposedly important?”

“i agree. birthdays are silly. you are merely celebrating becoming old, irrelevant, and desolate.” calder said, with a shrug. “i do not understand why humans love such a day. they are just getting closer to death.”
“Unless you were already irrelevant and desolate to begin with. Then its just old.” Carmen replied back, her tone a bit more of a hum. “It’s the only day they get to feel special in their own miserable glory.”
