but the only sound that left his thin lips was an obligatory grunt. It wasn't necessarily meant for her; she just happened to be the only being available to witness the last of his performance. polite smiles, bowed heads, obedient grunts, all remnants of a life spent at court. unseen ley lines rushed around them, carrying the culmination of everything that is and all that will be. these steady bursts of asgard's power taunted its shadow prince as it ran alongside them. still, loki's magic forged a path through the forest, the little jolts marking exactly when the prince's attention diverged. "I prefer to be the hunter rather than the prey," loki murmured, and as if on cue, he felt a nudge. a pressure pushing against his magic, not enough to cause a substantial difference but enough to announce the presence. he looked over at her across the darkness of asgard's unmarked terrain; there it was, fire in the darkness.

where loki softened, his efforts sharpened.

"sigyn, I think I'm finally having fun," he whispered as if they were still trapped at the harvest festival with countless onlookers. the upward curve of his lips was a haunting difference from the dismissive nature of previous expressions. "he's looking for us, do you feel it as well?"

" sif ! listen , i promise — no , i SWEAR it to be true ," loki’s words tumbled out faster than his legs could keep up with the goddess charging away . it’s official : loki is finally asgard’s boy who cried wolf. the only problem now is that there actually was a wolf , and no one would so much as turn their head toward it .

he slipped his body in front of her — a risky move , considering her skill with a sword . still , he insisted , his pale hands outstretched and he gave her a look that was actively crumbling . it matched the rest of him — the once neat prince of asgard was in disarray , his hair flopping forward , strands lifting as his chest heaved .

" sif , please . i’d swear on something if i thought it would sway you . help me , and if I’m lying , you can do whatever you want to me ! i’ll take an oath , i’ll draw blood — anything ! "

loki had a plethora of bad habits . the one that rose to the top was his constant pursuit of knowledge — his seeking , believing things were there , and making them so . it helped with his magic ; he could imagine something and will it into existence , but his imagination didn't make those things any less real . her words were nothing short of encouraging . thor would never have questioned a pep talk before a tournament match , and yet , loki's mind could take that and twist it into something unrecognizable — something beyond the scope of sanity and just short of madness . i look weak, he thought. i shouldn't look weak in a moment like this. If his father smelled that fear, it would overshadow his inevitable win. The ends never supported the means with him.

then the trickster looked over at her , catching a glimpse of what he interpreted as honesty personified . it disarmed him . tight eyebrows trembled into something kinder — a reflex that seemed to be exclusive to the goddess . she wasn't a contradiction like so many things were . so her words , once tethered back to her identity and her expression , meant something .

" is it that obvious ? " his green eyes scoured her face for a flicker of doubt , anything to grab hold of . " perhaps I can use that , " loki flashed his crooked smile , " i do my best work when I'm underestimated . . . when it's time , promise you'll cheer ?

there were several truths (and a few well-placed lies) that could be said about the lioness of asgard . namely , that without all the nepotism and primogeniture supporting their realm , perhaps she'd be actualized as the true captain of the guard. she was clever , powerful , breathtaking — and , of course, she absolutely TERRIFIED the youngest prince. not for any of the aforementioned qualities , mind you , but rather for the fury he effortlessly summoned from her . sif's attention was like everything else about her : unyielding . and it was something loki found himself both craving and dreading in equal measure .

he turned on his heels slowly , arms outstretched in a mock flourish , as if he might cap the moment with a bow . he hoped the extra time it took to face her would grant him some spark of brilliance — some way to twist the situation so that he came off as charming rather than irritating .

" sif ! you look as radiant as ever . did you — " loki’s words stumbled and broke as his breath caught , the exhale vanishing with uncharacteristic haste . he was about to make a cheap remark about her hair — something cutting , petty , and entirely beneath him . at least this time . " did you get a new sword ? " he mumbled, the shift in message coming with a nervous glance downward and a sheepish smile to top off this little piece of performance art . " your footsteps have gotten quieter . not at all how I remember them . "

The clenched jaw and narrowed gaze should say everything about how she feels in seeing the other god. Furled digits tighten around the hilt of her sword, thumb playing along the pommel as she does herself a service in not drawing it immediately. There was little to gain from being so outwardly violent.
