So this is my first ever part of the ‘tripping on music’ series, I’m so excited to be starting this! I’ll be doing it once a month. Withouth further due, let’s get into the music I’ve been enjoying lately. This post will be a bit longer than usual since I’ll be talking about the recently passed Grammys and Brit Awards, for example.

This week has been a month and especially a week of unexpected collaborations. There’s been a lot of great new music released but there was one above all of them for me; the record producer/DJ Zedd teaming up with the wonderful-voiced and clearly ascendant Alessia Cara in “Stay” that was released on Thursday. If you haven’t heard it yet, go give it a listen because I think it’s an incredible song and one of the best I’ve heard in a long time. The song has such an amazing vibe and Cara’s voice suits it really well. I would’ve given Alessia a Grammy nomination this year also but now she certainly has to get at least one next year after the release of this banger.
The second best song that has come out the last two weeks in my opinion is another unexpected collaboration between two award-winning duos/bands: Coldplay and The Chainsmokers. The catchy soon-to-be hit “Something Just Like This” was first performed and revealed to the world in the annual Brit Awards which the world went completely nuts about. It’s been climbing its way up the global streaming charts and it’s currently number two on Spotify, which is no wonder considering they both have ridiculously large fanbases around the world and most importantly sound amazing together. Coldplay’s lead singer Chris Martin’s raspy voice combined with The Chainsmokers’ nice background stuff and the outstanding beat drop during the chorus make “Something Just Like This” my second favorite recently released song.
There’s also been other kinds of collaborations – this one not so unexpected due to the DJ himself teasing it on his Snapchat story a month ago – that have seen sunlight in the last two weeks such as “Slide” by Calvin Harris which also features Frank Ocean and Migo. I’m personally not a huge fan of any of those artists although I do like some of their songs a lot but that’s probably why the appraised, two days ago released song is not in my top four this week. It’s a good song anyhow and has a lot of the ‘Frank Ocean sound’ on it rather than Calvin’s usual style.

Next, I’d like to talk about Bruno Mars who I think is a fantastic singer, dancer and overall performer. He released his latest album “24K Magic” a few months ago in November 2016 after the last time he was popping up in the charts was way back when the Mark Ronson track “Uptown Funk” that he featured in was released in 2014.
The world wanted more, bigger and better and I think that’s exactly what we got. Bruno’s album is full of amazing songs varying from the name album’s party-starting name single “24K Magic” to melancholic ballads such as “Too Good To Say Goodbye”. There are two songs though that I’d like to focus on apart from those two.
The first one is “That’s What I Like” that he’s been doing a great job performing lately in award shows like the Grammys two weeks ago and Brit Awards this week. I think the lyrics of the song and especially the choreography Bruno’s been doing for it really suits his style and show his skills as a performer.
I absolute love the second song and it’s the biggest reason I brought “24K Magic” in my top four albums in this post. “Versace On The Floor” is really well written and has a great melody & a lovely vibe in it. It’s really hard to explain why it’s such a great song, just go give it a listen if you haven’t already!
So Bruno’s been performing in a lot of award shows lately but he’s been nominated for none which is obviously a lot because of the fact his album was only released a few months ago. But knowing his performing and songwriting skills, I think he must get a Grammy in the near future. I’ve seen a lot of people saying he’s the “next Michael Jackson”, the MJ of our time. I have to disagree with that. I think he’s the Bruno Mars of our time.

Like I’ve said, The 1975 is one of my absolute favorite bands. There are two reasons I’m bringing them up this week and the first one is “Loving Someone” from their iconically named album “I like it when you sleep for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it”. I think the whole album is incredible and full of beautiful and multidimensional songs that so many people can relate to and “Loving Someone” makes no exception to that. I’ve listening to it lately even more than before not only because of the great melody but also the amazing message it has. I think it’s an extremely universal songs and people can find themselves in the lyrics whether they’re white heterosexual males having issues with finding love and the society saying they should be loving someone or people in sexual minorities having issues with themselves and everyone else accepting who they really are and how they should handle love, for example.

The other reason I’m talking about them in this post is the fact that they won the award for Best British Group in the Brit Awards! I’m so happy that they did, they deserved it so much with the past year being amazing for them with for instance their number one album, great top 5 hit “The Sound” – which they performed at Brits – and their tour gigs at O2 London etc. They’re doing an incredible job talking about how everyone should be themselves, against Trump and for the minorities, for example. I was kind of sad that Bastille didn’t win but after considering it more, I genuinely do think The 1975 deserved it more this year.
I was also glad that Rag’n’Bone Man won the ‘British Breakthrough Act’ award, I think he’s really good and really deserved to win. I thought the other winners were okay, I don’t have such strong opinions on whether they should’ve given them to someone else or not. Then lastly, a bit about the Grammys that took place a few weeks ago. The 10-time Grammy award winner Adele returned with new music in late 2015, including the single that the world went completely crazy for. I’m of course talking about “Hello” which was one of the biggest reasons she smashed it again this year at the Grammys with five awards. She got “Record of The Year” as well as “Song of The Year” and “Best Pop Solo Performance” for the previously named hit single and “Album of The Year” & “Best Pop Vocal Album” for her amazingly successful third album, “25″. I think all of the awards were really well deserved.
Beyoncé was also nominated for most of those awards so Adele decided to thank and appraise her in two of her thank you speeches. She was seemingly flattered about but it of course didn’t take away the disappointment in only getting two awards that night: one for her glorified hit album “Lemonade” and one for her music video for “Formation”.

So, the biggest Grammy awards this year were given to Adele, Beyoncé and Chance the Rapper, who was awarded “Best New Artist”. But if I were to list the biggest winners there, I’d also include Twenty One Pilots. I think their music is absolutely phenomenal and I love them so much – I even got to witness their show live a few months ago in Helsinki which is easily one of the best experiences I’ve ever had, I’ll talk about that in other posts later on. Anyway, the “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance” award they got for their major hit single “Stressed Out” from their latest album “Blurryface” was so well deserved. They were nominated for five Grammys in total including “Record of The Year” and this, of course, wasn’t as huge of an award as that but it’s still incredibly special. Tyler and Josh – the singer and the drummer of the band – have talked a lot about global success and how it somehow matters and doesn’t matter at all to them at the same time. They’re spreading wonderful and important messages through their fantastically written songs and are so down to Earth, which can be seen in the way they went to accpet the award – in their underwear, because of a joke they had many years back when they weren’t famous at all. I’m so proud of them and I’m hoping their next album is as good as the last one or even better. For the full list of Grammy winners and nominees this year, go to: https://www.grammy.com/nominees.

That was it, my first ever post on the ‘tripping on music’ series! This was so much fun, I’m really excited to be continuing it in the future. The next post is coming in two weeks and then I’ll talk about for example Katy Perry’s and Ed Sheeran’s comebcaks and of course one of my biggest favorites, Bastille who I’ll see live in ten days!
Check out my Spotify @haverinenpatrik for the songs I’ve been loving lately, I update my playlists multiple times a week. Thank you for reading, see you in two weeks! x Patrik
