This year will be the last year of the Duathlon National Championship in Bend, Oregon. This is the bike course. Fully close off to any vehicle traffic. One hundreds percent freshly pave road from Summit High School (T1-T2) towards Mt. Bachelor on Skyliner Road. Wide sweeping turns, false flat, gradual incline, and fast descend. I don't normally post my Strava training on public site but on Wednesday July 23, 2014 will forever live in my memories. For those that follow Courtney and I on Strava there is a specific workout that we do for certain day. Certain routine, this day was one of them. It look like just any other ride we do, sometime we repeat certain course but approach it differently with different intent. Initially we were set out to do a 115 miles ride, which turn out to be 105 miles with 9300+ feet of climbing. This was Courtney first year of triathlon. What so special about this day was that she wanted to prove to herself that she was able to do a century on her CAAD10-3 (knick name Pegasus). Pegasus took her all over the place and that day was one of them. We climbed over Santa Cruz mountain, dash down on Highway 9. Head up north on highway 1. For those that knows Highway 1 going up north you "will" battle the headwind constantly. She cry at a pit stop, we spoke a little bit and continue on. She persevere, she fought, she conquered. 102 miles later she knew she gave it all she got. We had food but food wasn't enough. I crab onto her seat post and push her up the final hill at mile 103. I told her that we are going to make it over this last hill. My quad cramp but I mentally block it out. We glide down the last portion of the hill and finish it at mile 105. She said she feel like a failure. I said, "no, you did what you set out to do. You aim for a century, and you finish it." Courtney will walk on stage this coming week at AT&T Park for her SFSU graduation, behind every photos, ride, smile, tears, there is a story behind it. No matter your struggle, what path you took. What defines you is the things you do today will help you in the future. Take charge. You are stronger than you will ever know. Happy Monday Morning to all! It is race week for Ironman Santa Rosa 70.3. As all of you may know the swim will be a rolling start. The bike course will be a mix of new road and old section of the discontinued Ironman Vineman 70.3. The climb will at the beginning of the course about 5-7 miles in. The course will offer technical roller with turns and wide sweeping turn. The course will offer a wide varieties of different vineyards for your viewing pleasure as you make your way from Lake Sanoma down to Santa Rosa. Willowside Road will be the most bumpiest ride (giving everyone a heads up so no one will be surprise on race day). Once you get onto Guernville Road it is smooth sailing all the way to downtown Santa Rosa (T2 aka Transition 2). The wonderful thing about the multi-sport of triathlon is that no matter what the distances maybe, everyone get treated the same under the same condition. It doesn't care about the color of your skin, background, religious belief, what country you came from, or your political affiliation. If it is humid you will suffer like everyone else, if there is a mountain at mile 10, you're going to climb it like everyone else. If the water is cold or choppy, you guess it! You will be in that water like everyone else. How we prepare ourselves will be up to us. When it come to triathlon I start with the basic of, language help shape perception. Perception is also influence by language. What’s going on in our mind is also influence by our daily use of vocabulary. So the basic aren’t so basic. The fundamental building block of an individual starts in the mind. Feed the mind of your athletes with positive constructive feed back, and give them tools to utilize. An old saying goes “If you give a person a fish, you feed this person for a day. Ironman Oceanside 70.3 has been an interesting one and a very inspiring one too. I saw a young lady in Courtney age group making her way on the second lap, it was near the cut of period. I was picking up Courtney's bike from transition. I yell to her," You're doing great Abbie!!". She try, she try really hard. She gutted out whatever she had to make it to the finish line. You see, toeing in the Ironman 70.3 race is a brave thing to do. If it was easy then everyone would be doing it. To the girl that finish the race 5 second over the cut off period in Courtney's age group, to me you're a rockstar. I don't care if Ironman says you DNF. You toeing the starting line and you finish what you'd started. It takes courage and grit. I hope you know you earned the medal like everyone else in that race. Young lady like you two are a hero because you try with everything you had. As for Courtney things weren't in our control, what she went through in the morning pretty much dictated her entire race. With that in mind she has more gain to take away from this race. Hope to see everyone at @usapevents at Half Moon Bay triathlon!
